Young Alaskan Huntress Interrupts Prom Day for Grizzly Hunt

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 15:30

Like most girls her age, 15-year-old Cassidy Kramer thought prom day was a big deal. Yet unlike most girls, the resident of Kotzebue, Alaska spent much of last Saturday roughing it in the bitterly cold wilderness a with rifle in hand. This is because prom just so happened to coincide with a subsistence hunt led by her father, Lance Kramer. “It’s important to go out and get bears in the springtime,” Lance told KTUU. “We always try to get a spring bear every year, this time of year.” Hunting grizzlies...

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 14:38

What started off as a routine license check quickly escalated after a man reportedly tried to drown an Oklahoma game warden over the weekend. According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), a game warden approached three men fishing near Bunch in eastern Oklahoma on Sunday and asked to see their licenses. Among the men was 29-year-old Billy Joe Patrick, who had an active warrant out in Arkansas for a parole violation. When the warden attempted to arrest Patrick, OSBI officials said that Patrick began fighting back. “The men fell into a pond where the suspect tried...

AK vs SKS: Which Should You Buy, and Why?

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 13:20

Let's embark upon a little thought experiment. You’re perusing through your local gun store with several hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket, when you come upon two fine examples of Soviet engineering: an SKS and an AK clone. Both fire the same inexpensive .30-caliber cartridge and are renowned for their durability and reliability---so how do you choose one to purchase? The deciding factors are largely subjective and personal, but once a shooter identifies their needs it can be greatly simplified. When I consider buying a gun, I normally evaluate it in terms of six key...

The 7 Unspoken Health Benefits of Bowhunting

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 07:57

Whether you use a treestand or prefer to stay low to the ground, bowhunting can be a demanding physical activity. Not all bowhunters will carry elk meat through miles of backcountry, just as not every bowhunter will brave cold and frigid conditions to bag a late-season deer. Yet all that sweat and hard work often means more than just meat in your freezer, it also means positive benefits that make you healthier and stronger. Feeling a little flabby? Why not pick up your bow in addition to your workout regime? You might find that shooting a few arrows will not only help to keep you healthy, but...

Angler Eats Massive Barracuda, Finds Out Later It Was a World Record

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 07:35

At just under 32 pounds, this Mexican barracuda made for a lot of tasty ceviche. It also could have made a new world record, if it was not already scarfed down. Dennis Tilden caught this impressively-sized fish during a tournament near Matapalo, Costa Rica recently. Unfortunately for Tilden, nobody told him about the barracuda's potential record status until after the fish had been prepared. "As the chef was preparing a barracuda ceviche and getting the rest ready for dinner, Dennis mentioned the captain’s comment. A check with the IGFA [International Game Fish Association] record book...

Mon, 04/27/2015 - 15:54

Thin Mints and Tagalongs are not exactly meant to be used as emergency rations, but eight boxes of Girl Scout cookies meant the difference between life and death for two women stranded in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. According to CNN, Leslie Roy, 52, and Lee Wright, 56, were driving to Kalamazoo in the southwestern Lower Peninsula after visiting a relative when their truck got stuck in heavy snow on a backwoods road in Luce County. For nearly two weeks, the sisters huddled inside the relative warmth of the car and survived...

Video: This Fox in Chernobyl Makes a Better Sandwich Than You

Mon, 04/27/2015 - 15:35

Does nuclear mutation include the development of advanced sandwich-building skills? Journalists studying animals inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone reportedly found this fox near the abandoned city of Pripyat. The fox may not have three eyes or wings, but it does seem to be suffering from a case of mange. As the journalists feed it pieces of bread and meat, the fox also displays a bizarre ability to craft sandwiches. Amazingly, it also fits the entire thing into its mouth before leaving. Throw some more meat and cheese in there, and this may very well be a fox that can beat you in the...

Video: Trapped Snake “Thanks” Rescuers with Regurgitated Frog

Mon, 04/27/2015 - 10:20

Usually, helping wildlife in need is its own reward, but sometimes nature can surprise you. When two young men cut this entangled snake free in the video below, the creature showed its gratitude by vomiting up a smelly, half-digested frog. Not exactly a reward most people would enjoy, but there's more to this story than it would seem. Video contains very strong language. In fact, you might want to mute it. https://youtu.be/A5dkGTn6Vr4?t=2m47s Of course, the snake is not actually "thanking" its rescuers, it more than likely thinks that the humans are just another threat. Snakes will...

Big Guns in Small Packages: 5 Tiny Derringers That Shoot Large Bullets

Mon, 04/27/2015 - 07:35

Derringers were the original concealed carry handgun---unless you count stuffing a wheellock pistol into your coat and lugging that around. To this day, derringers remain among the smallest of handguns you can get your hands on, but they aren't as popular as they used to be. With the proliferation of smaller and smaller semiautomatic pistols and revolvers, derringers are now often seen as more of a novelty than a tool for self-defense. This is partly due to a misconception that all derringers come in teeny, tiny calibers to match their diminutive frames, but that's not always the case....

Mon, 04/27/2015 - 07:10

Say what you will about turkeys, but they can sometimes surprise you. This trail cam near Waverly, Tennessee managed to capture video of a turkey deftly avoiding a golden eagle in the middle of a dive. Not only that, but the gobbler stays on land and calmly---but quickly---runs out of view. We're not sure if the eagle managed to get its meal after all, but that sure was impressive. Also, check out the impressive beard. https://youtu.be/Yp88qOHvc6w...

Fri, 04/24/2015 - 14:48

Due to public demand and a request from Governor Bill Walker, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (DFG) announced that it will not euthanize a family of five bears near Anchorage. The department intially intended to capture and destroy the black bears---a sow and her four yearling cubs---after the animals made repeated visits to Anchorage to rummage through unsecured trash. Earlier this month, the animals were spotted in the downtown neighborhood of Government Hill, where they were surrounded by curious bystanders taking photos on their phones. Feeling threatened, the cubs climbed a...

Fri, 04/24/2015 - 14:10

Do you need a high-powered nail gun that can be used both in your next home improvement project and at the range? Well, with a bunch of custom .410 shotshells and a handful of nails, YouTube's MattV2099 effectively turned his Saiga shotgun into a nailgun of epic proportions. "This is the 410x76 NAIL shotgun slug," stated the video's description. "We take a handful NAILS and convert them to a combination glue/nail slug. Conceptualized as the Russian nail gun wacky shotgun load, we [then] discover this load actually has serious power, penetration and aiming capabilities." Yet, it would...

Another Tie on the “Turkey Tree”

Fri, 04/24/2015 - 12:58

For over 20 years, my friends and I have been hunting wild turkey on a farm in north central Kansas. While each year is different from the last, there is one tradition that always stays the same—the “Turkey Tree.” What was once a bare branch in the woods now bears the blood-stained ties used to hang up and clean the harvested birds—48 to be exact—and each year the Turkey Tree gains another set of ties to signify our group’s success. The crisp, cool air of that 2015, Kansas opening-day morning settled over us as we waited for the sun to rise over the emerald green alfalfa grass....
