In the wake of a shooting a Marine recruiting station in Chattanooga last week, measures to keep military members and staff safe were quickly taken, the Marine Corps Times reports. One of which included temporary closing recruiting stations and telling recruiters not to wear uniforms in public. But not everybody is taking the advice seriously.

Although I’m a firearms instructor and have been for many years, I just so happened to receive some high quality instruction recently about the importance of follow-through. Receiving instruction with humility is when learning comes best, so my mouth was shut and my ears were wide open.

A federal jury in Fort Pierce, Florida, convicted two members of the Pagan Motorcycle Club of possession of a gun by a convicted felon and selling guns to a known convicted felon, according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office on Monday.

Richard Todd Badali, 52, of Castelberry, and Thomas Richard Laakmann, 60, of Orange City, were convicted on gun charges stemming from September 2011 when they sold a Star Model BM 9mm pistol to another Pagan Motorcycle Club member, a convicted felon who was cooperating with federal agents.

The charges were the result of a multi-year federal, state and local law enforcement task force operation targeting the Pagan Motorcycle Club. The operation resulted in the conviction of nine individuals for violations of federal firearms and narcotics laws.

Sentencing is scheduled for September. The two face a maximum of 20 years in prison.

The National Rifle Association says the bill proposed by South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn to close the “Charleston Loophole” is unnecessary and would expand the federal prohibited person categories.

With high profile shootings at military installations still very fresh in the mind of the nation, troops’ carry rights are currently in the news after several governors removed gun bans at their state’s military facilities.  But as is often the case, these gains for gun rights have been mired in debate over specifically where soldiers should be allowed to carry and whether military personnel should be allowed to carry to and from bases.
