School Security: AI Can Enhance Situational Awareness, But Relying on Technology Alone Can Be Deadly

Tue, 03/28/2023 - 17:00

I recently came across a press release from a company called ZeroEyes. They make AI-powered gun detection technology. The company is touting their system being installed at a school. While technology can be a great way to augment situational awareness, we need to be careful to not get lulled into a false sense of security from such systems. Knowing of a threat and actually doing something about it are two very different things.

I’m a Mom Too and Yes, Guns Belong in Schools

Tue, 03/28/2023 - 11:00

The bodies of the dead were not yet cold in the wake of an active killer spree at a Nashville, Tennessee, Christian school when it happened. Law enforcement had given brief statements, doling out dribs and drabs of information, and a spectator decided to get involved. She was an unidentified woman who claimed she was, coincidentally, in the area vacationing with her school-age children (spring break is over, but whatever).

An anti-gun lobbyist just hijacked Nashville police’s press conference on this morning’s shooting at a private Christian school that left six dead.

Pro Tip: Conservatives Shouldn’t Use Anti-Gun Talking Points to Own the Libs

Mon, 03/27/2023 - 13:00

In a segment about armed LGBT people (particularly transgender people) in New Hampshire, Tucker Carlson pulled out some well-worn talking points we’re used to seeing here at The Truth About Guns. While everybody clearly has a right to their opinions about any topic, including the media and LGBT people, it’s never a good idea for someone who supports gun rights, as Carlson does, to use anti-gunners’ arguments to score a few cheap points against your ideological opponents.

Obscure Object of Desire: Interarms Mark X Rifle

Sun, 03/26/2023 - 16:00

I grew up with pump shotguns and bolt action rifles, with a smattering of lever guns mixed in. The only semi-auto we ever had was a Marlin Model 60. As I grew, I rebelled. I got into semi-auto firearms and kind of ignored bolt guns…until recently.

I’ve discovered I have got a soft spot for intermediate-caliber bolt action rifles. Maybe I’m cheap, and .223 is cheap, but what’s cheaper? How about 7.62×39? When I stumbled across the Interarms Mark X in 7.62x39mm I thought I’d found one of the old Zastava M85 Mini Mausers.

Sat, 03/25/2023 - 13:00

By Gene Johnson, AP

Kirkland Warren was out on bail pending a long-delayed murder trial in Arkansas. But when he was arrested in southwestern Washington state early this month on charges that he assaulted his ex-girlfriend and fired a gunshot into her apartment, he quickly posted bond and was released again.

Just a few days later, his ex-girlfriend, Meshay Melendez, 27, and her 7-year-old daughter, Layla Stewart, vanished. Police named Warren a person of interest in their disappearance.

Dem Amendment to Open Florida Legislature to Concealed Carry Voted Down by GOP Majority

Sat, 03/25/2023 - 08:00

[ED: The permitless carry bill passed the Florida House yesterday. It’s expected to get a vote of the full Senate next week.]

Among the amendments rejected by the GOP included one from Orlando Democrat Anna Eskamani, which would have repealed the prohibition of carrying weapons into meetings of the Legislature – a proposal dubbed by St. Petersburg Rep. Michele Rayner-Goolsby as the “good for the goose, good for the gander” amendment.

In Cutting Programs to Cover Mounting Administrative and Legal Costs, the NRA Risks Losing Even More Members

Fri, 03/24/2023 - 14:00

Brian Mittendorf, The Ohio State University

The National Rifle Association’s financial firepower, which arose in part due to its large and loyal membership base, has long been one of the gun group’s main sources of strength.

But the NRA has in recent years faced a financial tsunami, one that came to light after the 2016 election. A swirl of disagreements with longtime business partners, accusations of waste and misspending, ballooning debt and lawsuits from the New York and Washington, D.C.

LA’s Woke, Soft-On-Crime DA Is America’s Worst Salesman for More Gun Control Laws

Fri, 03/24/2023 - 12:00

By Mark Oliva

Let the gun control zealots defend this. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón had to be shamed into doing his job to protect his community from a would-be school murderer.

DA Gascón refused to bring charges against a teen who allegedly posted threats against a school on social media and was allegedly caught carrying stolen guns. His team of lawyers claimed there wasn’t enough information of the criminal threat.

The Time Has Come for Reparations for New York City Residents Who Have Been Deprived of Their Second Amendment Rights

Fri, 03/24/2023 - 10:00

Guilt is a powerful emotion. So powerful, in fact, that an American city is considering impoverishing itself and future generations of its citizens in order to absolve itself of guilt, achieve some kind of perceived redemption, and display for all the world its exemplary virtue as it atones for a wrong that…no one in the city either committed or experienced.

California became a state in 1850, just 11 years before the first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter.

Quick and Simple: How to Zero Your Rifle in Only One Shot (Well…Almost)

Thu, 03/23/2023 - 16:00

There are few things more frustrating than wasting good ammo trying to get your rifle zeroed. If you just can’t seem to find the paper or can’t chase that zero down, turning expensive ammunition into nothing but noise gets old really fast.

Since I’m constantly bolting optics onto loaner rifles, I thought I’d share how I get zeroed at 100 yards with as few rounds fired as possible.

Open Carry Amendment to Florida Permitless Carry Bill Withdrawn After 48 Hours

Thu, 03/23/2023 - 12:00

By Lee Williams

Florida’s quest for full-blown constitutional carry has garnered the attention of the nation’s pro-gun movement and drawn the ire of the gun-ban industry.

Twenty-five states have already passed constitutional carry, so Florida could become the “majority state,” which terrifies those opposed to civil rights.

Two bills are rocketing through the state legislature in Tallahassee: HB 543 and SB 150, and Gov. Ron DeSantis has promised to sign whatever the Republican super-majority in the legislature can get to this desk.
