Video: ATV Rider Smacks Head-on into Deer, Both Miraculously Walk Away

Mon, 04/06/2015 - 11:18

One of the dangers of outdoor recreation is that occasionally, you'll get in the way of wildlife. Worse yet, sometimes they will get in the way of you. This ATV rider was blindsided when a deer suddenly appears out of the treeline and runs directly in their path. The resulting collision sends both the deer and rider flying, but somehow both were able to get back to their feet just seconds afterwards. It's unpredictable out there. Be safe and wear a helmet. https://youtu.be/wGPWQC1kh30...

Video: Polish Man Rescues Wild Sheep Wrapped up in Tree

Mon, 04/06/2015 - 09:42

As an ancestor of modern day domestic sheep, mouflon sheep have a reputation for being rugged, determined, and indomitable animals. The rams of the species are especially notable for their wide, circular horns---which can prove to be a problem when navigating the dense forests of Poland. A jogger and his son in Grablin Forest came across this desperate-looking ram as it tried to free itself after getting locking his horns around a tree. The animal seems to have been there for some time, and had already stomped a circle into the dirt while trying to untangle itself. Luckily, Krzysztof...

Video: King Cobra Goes on Rampage after Being Offered Mouse

Mon, 04/06/2015 - 09:02

Maybe this cobra just isn't hungry. Most animals greet feeding time with enthusiasm, but not so for this King Cobra. Perhaps it was in the mood for something else, or maybe it was just indignant at the way it's being treated. King cobras, as their name would suggest, have a notorious and fearsome reputation in the jungles of Southeast Asia where they live. Their venom is a poisonous cocktail of neurotoxins, and can cause anything from cardiovascular collapse, paralysis, and death by respiratory failure. This venom is so powerful that it can kill adult elephants within hours, and has an...

Mon, 04/06/2015 - 00:25

In a press conference last Thursday, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed Senate Bill 45, a measure that will allow state residents over the age of 21 to carry concealed weapons without a permit. The bill previously passed the state Senate two months ago and was approved by the House in a 85-39 vote after that. Called the "constitutional carry" bill by its supporters, the proposal received wide support from gun rights advocacy groups such as the NRA and National Association for Gun Rights. Set to take effect on July 1, Kansas will become the sixth state in the country to allow...

The 5 Luckiest Bird Hunters Caught on Video

Sun, 04/05/2015 - 18:11

Have you ever been so frustrated that you threw your bow at a pheasant? Have you ever practiced the art of quail catching? Did it work out for you? If it did, you might be on this list. Hunting birds can be an unpredictable affair, but these five videos are some of the strangest things we've seen. Sometimes it just doesn't matter what kind of gun you're shooting or what kind of gear you're carrying, the stars seem to align and the odds swing in your favor. Or a bird comes flying out of left field and you instinctively catch it like a fluffy baseball. 1. When in doubt, throw your...

Video: Eagle Has a Good Time Playing Soccer

Sun, 04/05/2015 - 17:17

Where do eagles enjoy tossing around a soccer ball? Apparently Vancouver. The North Shore Football Club was holding soccer practice last week when the team was interrupted by large eagle landing and staking a claim to one of the balls. The bird then kicked it around and even jumped on it, but seemed to have little interest in scoring any goals. "It was probably one of the most incredible things that I've ever seen. Just to be able to be that close, 20 feet from an eagle and to be able to watch it for two-and-a-half minutes was amazing," Stuart Ince, club president, told Read more »

The 5 Best Inside-the-waistband (IWB) Concealed Carry Holsters

Thu, 04/02/2015 - 15:18

I’m a holster geek. You know what they say---the first step to dealing with a personal problem is to admit that you have one. I’ve been collecting holsters for years in search of the perfect carry solutions for various guns and lifestyles and am now the proud owner of somewhere north of 250 holsters. That’s a lot, considering the most I’ve ever worn at one time (as an experiment) was 11. As the owner of a Y chromosome, I’ve settled on inside-the-waistband carry as my daily default. Sure there are times when my required dress or activity requires different carry methods, but if I...

Video: M60 Machine Gun Fired in Ultra-slow Motion

Thu, 04/02/2015 - 13:47

The M60 machine gun has served with distinction in every branch of the US military since its introduction in 1957. Weighing more than 20 pounds, the M60 and its variants are belt-fed machine guns chambered in 7.62 NATO and capable of firing between 500 and 650 rounds per minute. Due to its hefty weight and simplicity, soldiers dubbed the M60 "the Pig" in the Vietnam War. While the M60 was eventually replaced by newer light machine guns---such as the M249---it remains an iconic firearm for the US Armed Forces and is still popularly seen in film and other media. Now you can watch the M60, as...

The ghostly coloration is actually caused by hair loss resulting from tick infestations. The...

California Lead Bullet Ban Could Take Effect This Year

Thu, 04/02/2015 - 11:11

California hunters who thought they had until 2019 to switch over to non-lead ammo may have done a double-take while reading this year's update from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW). In big, bold letters, the DFW directed hunters' attention to new lead-free hunting updates in its 2015 Big Game Digest. The department has proposed that non-lead ammunition be required for all hunting on DFW property, as well as for all bighorn sheep hunters, beginning with the 2015 season. "The California Fish...

Thu, 04/02/2015 - 08:13

When you have access to a machine gun, a rental drop-top, and a private range outside Daytona Beach, what should you do? The answer is obvious: you should (responsibly and safely) dispense hundreds of rounds of pure freedom at steel targets from the passenger seat of said convertible at the cyclic rate. The guys from the VSO Gun Channel were well aware of this truth at Big 3 East two weeks ago, so they outfitted their Ford Mustang with a number of...

Wed, 04/01/2015 - 15:47

Is the Aloha State fast becoming a gun owner's paradise? Historically, Hawaii hasn't boasted a large population of gun owners or gun-friendly laws, yet data recently released by the state Attorney General's office showed that gun ownership is booming in the Pacific archipelago. Between the years of 2000 and 2014, more than 420,000 firearms were registered in the state of Hawaii, representing a massive 354 percent surge over preceding years. The number of statewide permit applications annually climbed 298 percent, while the number...

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, police and wildlife officers found a 350-pound black bear wedged between two buildings in Uniontown on Tuesday night, trying desperately to escape a game warden armed with a tranquilizer gun. The massive drum weighed 28.71 pounds and measured just over 34 inches in length. It was later verified by DNR biologist Kregg Smith. Finding the drum in Gun Lake came as a mild surprise to DNR officials since the species typically inhabits the Great Lakes or...

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Bear Eyesight

Wed, 04/01/2015 - 13:35

There’s a long-standing myth that bears have poor eyesight. Studies of the eyes of bears, deer, and other animals have shown that bears have much better eyesight that you think. A male grizzly bear was once observed trailing a sow in heat. The male had his nose to the ground and was dogging her. She circled back around and came past him at only about 100 feet, but when he looked up, he did not respond to the sight of her, he kept right on trailing her even though it took him 200 yards farther away from her present location. Many people might interpret this to imply that bears...

Video: Angler Finds Northern Pike Inside Larger, Cannibal Pike

Wed, 04/01/2015 - 10:03

The northern pike is a notorious cannibal and when food sources are scarce, will think nothing of devouring one of its smaller brethren. These aggressive predators are highly territorial and frequently engage in skirmishes with others of their own species. While smaller pike generally hunt in groups, larger specimens are solitary and "control" an area by dominating lesser pike. The larger the pike, the larger the area it controls, and it's not above stealing prey from younger fish. In times of hardship, larger pike will decide to skip the prey fish and go after other pike directly. For...
