Wood Bison to Be Reintroduced to Alaska after 100-year Absence

Mon, 03/30/2015 - 08:18

For the first time in over a century, Alaska will be home to a wild herd of wood bison. According to KTUU, a group of 100 bison have safely arrived in Shageluk from the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where the animals were kept since they were first transported to the state in 2008. Now, the herd is awaiting release into the wild. "We've been at this project for more than 23 years, for all practical purposes, but we only got the go ahead last October," said Cathie...

Video: Watch These Two Koalas Wrestle Like Humans

Mon, 03/30/2015 - 08:00

Koalas are cute, lovable critters that happen to be as dumb as a sack of rocks. Seriously, it's been proven that a starving koala won't eat food off a plate because they need to be trained to do it beforehand. Despite that, these marsupials are also skilled wrestlers with an understanding of grappling techniques. As you watch the below video, it's hard not to recognize what appears to be legitimate (human) wrestling holds and positions. Now imagine if these fuzzy animals were just about 800 pounds heavier. They might even be able to wrestle a bear into...

Kroger Executive Stands Firm Against Group’s Demand to Ban Guns from Store

Mon, 03/30/2015 - 07:43

In a recent interview on CNBC's Squawk Box, Kroger Senior Vice President and CFO Michael Schlotman was asked about the company's stance on open carry within the chain's stores. For months now, the pro-gun control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America has called for the store to ban open carry from its locations, arguing that many states have "weak" gun laws and it is Kroger's responsibility to protect its customers. In the past, campaigns by Moms Demand Action have played a part in influencing companies like Target to change their policy regarding firearms. Kroger,...

New York Passes Bill to Authorize Elk Season, No Elk Present in State

Fri, 03/27/2015 - 15:24

If there are no elk in the forest, can you have an elk season? Apparently New York lawmakers are entertaining the idea, as a bill that recently passed the state's Senate Environmental Conservation Committee will authorize moose and elk hunts in the state. This is despite that fact that elk have been expatriated from New York since the late 1800s. "Woolly mammoths and passenger pigeons may be next!" stated Brad Hoylman (D-Manhatten) on his Facebook page. Not surprisingly, the bill has been a target for jokes and witty remarks about...

Video: Coyote Gets Stared Down by Guard Llama, Donkey

Fri, 03/27/2015 - 15:22

You wouldn't think that llamas would make good guard animals, unless you've actually seen one in action. Capable of building a strong bond with domestic animals like sheep or goats, llamas are highly defensive of their adopted herds and will aggressively chase away coyotes and other small predators. Add that to their natural dislike of canines and you have a large---and most importantly, diligent---bodyguard for livestock. Donkeys, on the other hand, are just more than happy to stomp on things that try to eat their friends. https://youtu.be/G8oO-GypOLA...

Trap Yourself a Beaver This Spring Using These Tips

Fri, 03/27/2015 - 11:07

Whether you are a seasoned veteran trapper or a novice looking for some extra money and a chance to get outdoors after being cooped up all winter, spring beaver trapping is a great opportunity. A few years ago my young teenage son Sterling and a couple of his buddies decided to go on a camping trip in the forest. Google Earth showed dozens of small lakes in the wooded area near our Minnesota home. Sterling picked a lake well out into the forest and off they went on a camping expedition. This is not a story about camping, of course, but about the beavers he discovered in this...

Photo: Australian Angler Unexpectedly Catches Crocodile Alongside Blue Threadfin

Fri, 03/27/2015 - 10:16

Blue threadfins are notoriously energetic fighters for their size and will just run about every which way once hooked. That is why when Ben Stack suddenly felt the line suddenly stop and turn into a dead weight, he supposed the fish had gotten snagged under a log. What he reeled in was no log, however. The Queensland native was fishing off of Australia's Cape York when he pulled in a crocodile that had fastened its jaws around his catch. // Posted by Cape York Guide to Explore, Hunt &...

Whether on the line or stealing your fish, sharks add an element of excitement---and danger---to any kayak fishing trip. Unless you're fishing specifically for shark, you generally don't want to see one poke their head out of the water. And especially not when you're reaching over the side for that tuna you've been fighting for the last half hour. So, if you're already not paranoid enough, here's five videos that will make you want to keep your legs inside at all times. 1. My First Nebraskan Tom

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 22:59

On May 10, 2013, I drove four hours from Sidney, Nebraska, to my first-ever turkey hunt. I met Steve---my guide and first Nebraskan friend---in Gibbon, a small town outside Kearney. We set out shortly after I arrived to a plot of land near a creek, hoping to lure a tom from his roost. After waiting an hour for a turkey to take notice of our decoys, the sun began its downward slope just as the silhouette of a tom could be made out in the treeline across from us. Unfortunately, he stayed put and taunted us from above. We woke up the next morning at 5:30 a.m. and headed back to the same plot...

Video: Watch This WWII-era Sturmgewehr Fire in Ultra-slow Motion

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 15:21

The Sturmgewehr 44 (StG 44) is an iconic German rifle developed and produced during World War II. The StG 44 is often considered to be the first modern assault rifle. Chambered in 7.92x33mm Kurz and capable of unloading over 500 rounds per minute, the StG 44 provided the German infantryman with a powerful advantage on the battlefield. While the StG 44 itself came into mass production a little too late to have a significant effect on the war, it heavily influenced the design of later firearms. Now you can watch the StG 44 fire in glorious ultra-slow motion...

First Case of Exotic Chewing Lice Found in Colorado Deer

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 15:11

On Wednesday Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) confirmed that a young mule deer found east of Denver was infested with exotic chewing lice, a species similar to the lice that is responsible for the widespread deer "hair loss syndrome" found in other states. The affected male fawn was put down by a wildlife officer after it was found by a local rancher. Wildlife officials described the animal as "being in poor body condition and struggling to survive." Laboratory results confirmed the species of lice as Bovicola...

Hunting Tech of the Future? Scientists Discover Way to Inject Human Eyes with Night Vision

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 14:35

Many people think of night vision gear as cutting edge technology, and they wouldn't be wrong. As evidenced by their exorbitant price, night vision scopes and goggles are highly sophisticated pieces of technology. Yet scientists are already looking into the next best thing: injecting temporary night vision directly into your eyes. Is it possible? Well, a research group called Science for the Masses has already done it by injecting a chemical called Chlorin e6 (Ce6) into human retinas. Ce6 is commonly used to treat cancer and night blindness in humans, and is occasionally found in some...

The FNX-45 Tactical: Hogzilla Slayer and Home-defense Utensil

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 14:12

I can’t decide if the FNX-45 Tactical pistol is more suited for door kickers, home defense, or battling Hogzilla.

It’s a huge .45 ACP, but I mean that more in terms of capability than size. In fact, holding it up to my Beretta 92FS, which is full-size (but certainly not physically obese), it’s about the same overall size. When I say huge, I mean that it makes those bigger caliber versus higher capacity arguments a moot point. You know what I’m talking about. 1911 Fan Club founders insist that the .45 ACP is so powerful that a single projectile will knock out at least four

Game Ranger Angrily Storms Off after Tourist Endangers Group Near Wild Animal

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 11:06

There are few better indicators of peril in the wild than a game ranger with his gun out and a nervous look on his face. This is doubly true when you can hear loud guttural grunts coming from the brush. At that point, it is advisable to stay back, stay quiet, and follow instructions carefully. It could mean the difference between observing a wild animal in peace, or "observing" it up close and personal. Unless, of course, you are this camera-wielding tourist, who brazenly walked forward to try and snap photos of whatever wildlife laid hidden in the...

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 08:09

It is somewhat comforting to know that even in a future with starships, teleporters, and holodecks, the humble handgun still has its place. If you're going to create a sci-fi setting, you're going to need some great looking sci-fi guns. While a lot of the genre's most iconic firearms are actually modified versions of existing guns, there are a handful that are completely unique. In this list we'll run through the most memorable handguns in sci-fi history. We couldn't include everything, but we did cover the best of the best. "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good...

The Perils of Improper Winter Deer Feeding: Small Herd Found Dead in New Hamsphire

Thu, 03/26/2015 - 07:57

Even when done properly, supplemental winter feeding can bring up many complications for starving deer. When done improperly, feeding deer could mean an agonizing death. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department reported on Tuesday that a group of 12 deer had been found dead in South Hampton, likely as a result of "well-intentioned, but tragically fatal, supplemental feeding by local residents." Fish and Game biologists found the 12 deer in a wooded suburban area and field necropsises indicated that the...

Will This Year Be the Best Yet for Morel Mushroom Hunters?

Wed, 03/25/2015 - 15:28

Many of us look forward to spring as the season of renewal: longer days, warmer weather, barbecues, and the comfort of hitting the rifle range without getting mild frostbite on our fingers. For mushroom hunters, however, there is another reason to greet the season---morels. And this year, if you live anywhere close to northwestern Canada, you can be a part of what has been predicted as the world's biggest morel harvest. According Smithsonian.com, a devastating brush fire in the...
