Video: The Mating Scream of a Female Mountain Lion
You're going to want to lower your volume a bit before watching this one.
If you've ever wondered what a female mountain lion in heat sounded like, then you're in luck. This trail cam footage was uploaded to YouTube earlier this year and appears to show a cougar "advertising" her readiness to mate with some seductive calling. While it may sound like someone screaming bloody murder to us, apparently male mountain lions find this sort of thing attractive.
Males can also produce similar screaming sound. While females use it to indicate the beginning of their heat cycle, males use it to...
Nebraska Man Catches Heaviest Fish in State History
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission recently certified a 113-pound, four-ounce paddlefish as the new state record, officially making it the heaviest fish caught in the state's history. The angler who caught it, Tom Keller of Malcolm, said he is still in a bit of shock.
"Didn't think it was that big," Keller said, adding that the fish did not put up the fight that he expected from such a titanic animal.
"Probably 10 to 15 minutes of actual fight time. Like I said, it wasn't a barn burner, it didn't zipline out like you would expect [from] a big fish like that. It was just more like...
Video: Could You Survive 3 Shots from an M16 to the Chest?
In the famous 1986 film Platoon, Willem Dafoe's character Sergeant Elias gets (spoiler alert!) shot in the chest three times by an M16. He survives, albeit for just a few minutes, and even has enough strength to run a short distance. How realistic were Elias' final moments? The Smithsonian Channel decided they'd find out.
To test out whether a human could survive three short-range shots to the chest from a 5.56x45mm M16, the Smithsonian team recreated the scene with help from a trauma surgeon and a weapons expert. The team filled a torso-sized block of ballistic gelatin with...
Rare Whitetail Deer Subspecies Bounces Back from the Brink
After nearly a half century of tireless conservation efforts, federal wildlife officials announced earlier this month that the Columbian whitetail deer may be finally taken off the endangered species list.
The rare and elusive subspecies is only found in the wild near the Lower Columbia River of the Pacific Northwest, which gave the animals their name, and near the valley floor of the Umpqua River Basin. A small population also lives in the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge in Washington. Officials with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) say that both wild populations have recovered...
Video: A Good Day Fishing Turns into a Disaster in Less Than 30 Seconds
There's nothing like a relaxing day spent fishing on your favorite body of water---that is, until you suddenly find yourself in the water with some serious choices to make.
The angler in this video had just hooked a nice-sized pike when disaster struck. In an effort to net his catch, the angler leaned too far over the edge of the boat, causing water to flood in. At this point you can almost see the the angler's mental struggle to either keep his catch or save himself and swim to shore.
Ultimately the fish got away and so did the boat, but thanks to the GoPro footage people will...
Oklahoma Angler Catches Bizarre “Cow-colored” Catfish
It looks like a catfish, but does it taste like beef? This strangely-colored fish was recently caught in Oklahoma's Lake Eufala and bewildered the anglers who caught it.
"Has anyone ever seen anything like this?" wrote Austin Claunch, who took photos of the fish and posted them on Facebook in the hope that someone could identify the fish's condition.
Many other fishermen chimed in with their thoughts about the vividly colored fish.
"There's a perfect explanation for this, ya see. It's that...
Video: Young Hunter Gets Emotional after Bagging His First Elk
Taking an elk on opening day is always an emotional event, but bagging your first elk ever? That's a special moment and this young hunter knew it.
"He was bound and determined to get an elk and, he really set a goal on getting one opening day," wrote the boy's father on Facebook. "It's all he's been talking about for a long time. We've taken many trips to the shooting range, countless trips up north and it all came together on Friday morning. We hiked our butts off to a mountain that was 9300 ft. elevation. We tracked a herd and everything lined up."
The hunt took place near Arizona's...
Photos and Video: New Subsonic ARs from Beck Defense
Some things aren’t supposed to work.
Things like jumbo jetliners actually flying, any electronic product the day after the warranty expires, and AR-pattern rifles that are actually subsonic.
At a recent Lancer Systems media event, I was proven wrong about the subsonic AR rifle part, although I’m fully confident my Clapper light switch will break next Tuesday. Lancer has partnered with Beck Defense to build some...
3 Common Scams All Hunters Should Be Wary Of
If it sounds too good to be true, it often is. This piece of wisdom is just as applicable to hunting as it is to everything else. Sportsmen and women may not get a lot of emails from Nigerian princes or sketchy pyramid schemes, but there are a number of scams geared directly towards hunters. Due to the nature of hunting, these scams can become downright dangerous.
Have you encounter any of these before? Let us know in the comments below.
1. The hunting lease scam
You're browsing online and you find an ad for 700-acre property in prime deer hunting country. It comes with a complete...
Tech Firm Develops Directed-energy Rifle to Shoot Drones
There is no question that drones are controversial. From concerns over privacy and government intrusion to armed drones being built in backyards, what is seen as a hobby by some is viewed with suspicion from others. Earlier this year a Kentucky man was arrested after shooting a drone out of the sky when he claimed it hovered over his house and videotaped his daughters. Similar stories...
Triumph Systems Brings Professional Training Targets to the Mainstream
At last week's Big 3 East event in Daytona Beach, Florida, Triumph Systems made their worldwide debut. Triumph's "hard launch" will take place at SHOT Show in January, but they brought several of their initial products to offer upon the gun-media altar at Big 3 first---and their innovative targets have several of us writer-videographer folks quite excited.
Triumph aims to make professional-level training aids more affordable. They'll allow individual shooters to improve their skills and instructors to present their students with more realistic...
Video: Anglers Spot Trophy Buck Swimming off Carolina Coast
While fishing off the Carolina coast you might expect to see a dolphin or a pelican, but the last thing you expect to see is an eight-point buck.
That's exactly what Capt. Dennis Barbour found while fishing about a half mile from shore. The anglers in this video noticed that the deer was heading away from land, so they decided to intervene.
The captain positioned his boat so that the deer was forced to head toward the beach instead of into the open water. Although you can't see what happened in the video, we hope that this buck made it back to shore...
GIF: Casting from a Lure’s Perspective
It's amazing what modern technology can do. Strike Cams are generally used to observe fish attacking lures, but this angler uploaded a beautiful shot of himself casting into a lake. Apparently adding a tiny camera to your lure also boosts your casting ability.
That lure---which appears to be a Lunker Punker from Blackdog Bait---landed nearly 100 yards away!
The first clip below has been stabilized. The original GIF can be seen further below.

3 Things That Set Michigan Whitetail Hunting Above the Rest
It’s no secret that Michigan hunters love deer season. Where else is opening day of firearm season considered a holiday to the point that schools are closed? Sometimes we have to have a little reminding just how good we actually have it here. Michigan really is a deer hunter’s dream destination.
On a recent trip to Illinois’ Pike County, the current whitetail hot spot if you read just about every hunting magazine, I was having a discussion with an employee of a major hunting lodge. When I mentioned that I was from Michigan, his response was that the Great Lake State was his all-time...
Video: Curious Black Bear Enters Montana High School
School staff in Bozeman, Montana learned a valuable lesson about keeping their doors closed after a wild black bear wandered into a high school on Wednesday. According to wildlife officials, the bear came in through an open garage door just an hour before students arrived for class. The inquisitive bruin wandered through the empty halls for several minutes---sniffing lockers and nervously pawing the walls---before it was found by a custodian and members of the school booster club.
“They were being careful. They were keeping a good, safe distance,” Principal Kevin Conwell told the...

Video: 15 Selfies with Bears That Will Make Your Jaw Drop
Selfies have captured the imagination of nearly all social media users. However, it's hard to stand out among the billions of selfies posted to Facebook, Instagram, and the like every day.
With that in mind, people have decided to start taking selfies with bears as a sort of "ultimate selfie."
In fact, the US Forest Service had to issue a warning against taking selfies with bears last year. That didn't stop these "adventurous" individuals from taking selfies with these dangerous wild...
Video: Bull Shark Learns Not to Mess with Hippos
Bull sharks are one of a handful of shark species that can tolerate freshwater, and the shark uses this advantage to raid coastal rivers and even occasionally lakes. While this tactic does give them access to prey that other sharks can't reach, it also brings them into the domain of other powerful animals. In this case, a lone bull shark ran afoul of a herd of hippos.
Used to dealing with temperamental crocodiles, these hippos are not fazed in the least. In fact, when the bull shark rushes one of the outliers, the herd decided it was time for a show of force. The shark may be an apex...
Quiz: Can You Identify These 10 Hunting Camo Patterns?
Depending on how much you shop around for camo, this quiz can either be very easy or very hard. Having the proper camouflage, regardless of which brand is your favorite, is absolutely vital to a successful hunt---so it shouldn't be a surprise that hunters are always debating which patterns work better.
Camo has become such a big part of hunting and the outdoor lifestyle that it naturally emerged as an emblem of the culture as a whole. Go anywhere in America and you're likely to see somebody decked out in camo, even if hunting season is still months away.
But can you recognize the...
New California Initiative May Lead to Ammo Background Checks
California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom proposed a 2016 ballot initiative today that includes a host of new gun control measures, including one that could make the state the first in the country to require background checks on ammunition purchases. The proposal would also ban the possession of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds, require gun owners to report stolen firearms, confiscate guns from felons, and compel the state Department of Justice to notify the federal government when someone is added to the database of persons restricted from possessing a firearm.
"In the last 72...
