Louisiana Tarpon Record Challenged by 246-pound Beast
After more than 22 years, Louisiana's legendary tarpon record may finally have met its match. David Prevost of Houma caught a 246.1-pound tarpon while fishing off Grand Isle last Thursday, possibly making it not only the heaviest tarpon landed in Louisiana waters, but in the entire United States.
"It took everything we had to get it over the edge (of the boat)," Jeff DeBlieux, who gaffed the fish, told Louisiana Sportsman. "We just couldn't get it over at first. And then, when we got it coming into the boat, I was afraid it...
Video: Cutaway 1911 Firing in Slow Motion
Larry Vickers is well-known for his slow-motion gun videos, but this footage of a cutaway 1911 firing might be his best yet.
This unique view of a 1911 was made possible by the gunsmiths at Wilson Combat. They expertly sliced away slide and frame material so that the extraction and feeding process could be viewed without altering the performance of the gun.
Check it out for yourself below.

Video: Deer Crashes Through Augustana College Dorm Window
College dorms can be home to all sorts of crazy antics, but having a deer crash through a window is still pretty unexpected.
That's exactly what happened one morning at Augustana College. A surveillance camera captured the scene as a doe crashed through a window in the lobby of Westerlin Hall.
After crashing through the glass the deer struggled to find its footing on the dorm's polished floors. According to the university, the deer was not seriously injured and it was eventually helped out of...
Video: Buck Fight Spills Out onto Golf Course
Wildlife is occasionally welcome on a golf course, but sometimes it can get in the way of a game or grounds maintenance. In this case, wildlife encroachment resulted in a few extra holes in the green.
Visitors to the Spyglass Hill Golf course at Pebble Beach in California had to briefly pause their game recently after two rambunctious bucks decided to duel right on the course.
The nearby Del Monte Forest is full of deer, but generally the shy animals will try to avoid human contact. In the rut, however, all bets are off and these bucks are ready to rumble---no matter who's...
October Hunts: Go Early or Go Late
Much has been said about the "October lull." It’s no secret that bucks are hard to find out and about during the daylight during this period of time. They spend the majority of the daylight hours in some shady thicket, waiting for the sun to set. The middle two weeks of October are simply a poor time to plan a bowhunt. If, like most hunters, you have only one or two weeks to hunt where you really want to hunt, you probably don’t want to spend it during the middle of the month of October.
The first and last weeks of October, however, are a different story altogether. There are...
Scientists Use Gene Editing to Create Super Dogs with Twice the Muscle Mass
Are super-sized dogs the next big thing for hunting? Scientists with a research institute in China say they have successfully used gene editing to create two beagles with twice the muscle mass of a regular dog, and plans are already being made to increase their size, intelligence, and even eliminate diseases.
According to the MIT Technology Review, researchers accomplished this by deleting problematic genes. In the case of the beagles, scientists with the Guangzhou General Pharmaceutical...
Video: Illegal Immigrants Unexpectedly Meet Polar Bear
A polar bear on its way to a British wildlife park made for an unlikely UK border guard.
The 22-month old polar bear named Nissan gave quite the fright to four men attempting to illegally enter the United Kingdom. The bear was in the back of a truck on its way to Yorkshire Wildlife Park from Calais, France. The truck made a brief stop and four men opened the door of the truck. After some hesitation, they jumped in the back of the truck with the bear.
However, the bear's caretakers were following behind the truck and they filmed the entire incident. The bear's caretakers also called the...
Report: Great Lakes May Be Experiencing Waterspout Outbreak
Waterspouts occur most frequently in the fall, when cooler air moves across waters still warm from the summer. In certain years, conditions on the Great Lakes can produce a multitude of waterspouts in a phenomenon known as an outbreak, in which dozens of the funnels form and appear over the lakes. The last big outbreak was in 2003, when a record 66 waterspouts were sighted over the span of a single week on the Great Lakes. Now researchers say another outbreak may be underway.

Drone Films 50,000-round Machine Gun Volley at Knob Creek
The Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot is probably the largest celebration of fully-automatic firearms anywhere on earth. It attracts over 20,000 visitors each year, and this time around of them filmed the event with a drone.
The Guns.com staff filmed this incredible footage of over 50,000 thousands rounds being fired in less than 15 minutes.
All of those rounds make for some serious pyrotechnics, which you can watch from the air in the video below.

Video: Deer Fails Horribly at Playing with Ball
Not all animals seem to grasp the basic principles of playing with a ball, and this young deer appears to be one such animal.
We can't figure out if it's terrified of the ball, has horrible aim, or is simply confounded by the small rubber sphere under its feet. Perhaps it's just doing what deer do: being flighty and generally unpredictable.
At any rate, the fawn appears to be tame and is likely being rehabilitated. Deer who lose their mothers at a young age are often turned over to human caretakers before they are released back into the wild.

10 of the Ugliest Deer Racks Ever Photographed
"Ugly" is a very subjective word. What seems grotesque to one person may be beautiful to another. However, the more we look at these pictures, the more we notice that there is just something very objectively wrong with how these antlers were developed.
Have you ever bagged a buck (or doe) with an ugly rack? There are a number of reasons why these antlers came in the way they did. Due to the nature of how antlers grow, just about any injury can have an effect on their shape. Some common deformities involve unicorn-like horns, or antlers sprouting from different places on the skull. Even more...
Video: Elephant Herd Runs Moped Rider Off Road
Elephants in Thailand's Khao Yai National Park are generally passive creatures, but one thing they apparently can't stand is loud traffic. This lone moped rider was run off a road in the center of the park by a herd of elephants after he drove nearby. It was not exactly his fault---the elephants were already agitated after a number of motorcyclists passed by earlier.

crazy! its going to happen soon! motorbikes have to be banned from khao yai national park. more to come!!!

Alaska Officials Approve Hunt of Musk Ox Stranded on Ice Floes
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game recently approved a resident hunting season for musk oxen near Nunivak and Nelson Islands after some of the animals became stranded on ice floes.
Alaskan musk ox are large, shaggy-haired animals that are well adapted to the cold, but the things that make them so resistant to frigid weather also make them horrible swimmers and unlikely to survive being trapped on ice.
“They’re not swimmers, they’re not going to swim,” Fish and Game...
INFOGRAPHIC: The Evolution of the Rifle from the 1600s to Today
This infographic from Cannon Security Products showcases the developments that led up to our modern rifles going all the way back the 1600s.
Modern rifles have come a long way over the past several centuries. In fact, while early muskets might vaguely resemble the long guns of today, they were not actually "rifles" proper.
This is because muskets lacked grooves, or rifling, in their barrels. This infographic does a great job of illustrating the progress in small arms design. There are a few minor omissions, errors, and oddities, but it still does a good job of presenting the major...
A Comprehensive Equipment Guide to Deer Camp Excellence
Deer camp is a long-standing, time-honored American institution in which friends and family gather to hunt and tell stories of years past while making new memories that will be told and retold for years to come. Nothing says tradition like deer camp, and Cabela’s has been a part of making these memories for generations. The following list is an accumulation of years of experience and advice from generations of deer hunters from across the country.

Man Claims to Have Built Functional Rail Gun in Garage
Every so often an aspiring backyard engineer decides to cobble together some batteries and junk metal in the hope of building something cool. But what about building a real, man-portable rail gun?
The idea is to build a smaller version of the same device currently being testing by the US military, a weapon so powerful that it can propel dense armor-piercing rounds over Mach 10---or about 10,000 feet per second. Keep in mind that a very fast conventional bullet, such as the .50 BMG, only goes about 3,000 feet per second, and they are not artillery shells.
Understandably, most...
The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The Sleeping Bear Polka
Before the venue of my ongoing wars with Mister Murphy moves further north to the State of Alaska, there is one more story that simply must be told about the last 24 hours of the same hunt that provided the basis for Chapter 56 of the BAREBOW! Chronicles. Same guide, different bear, different river, same totally frustrating outcome. In fact, I don’t know who ended up more frustrated in the end: my guide with me, me with my luck, or the young grizzly with his own, lackluster fishing...
Video: Watch This “Walking” Boat Crawl Across a Beach
We may not have flying cars in 2015, but it seems we do have walking boats. Watch this boat---or landing craft, as its manufacturer calls it---dig in with two hydraulically-articulating spikes and literally drag itself across a beach. So much for getting wet ever again.
If you're interested, the boat in this video is the Crawling Lander Craft from Hard Drive Marine. The 31-foot vessel is equipped with a Honda Marine 225 HP and is made especially to transport small vehicles, such as ATVs. Its most unique feature is of course the front ramp with the hydraulic spikes. It can be operated...

A Shot in the Dark
There’s no denying that many Americans are better prepared to defend themselves with firearms than possibly any time in our nation’s history. Or are they?
Those gun-owning Americans spend hours each day at the gun range shooting, tweaking gear, and improving their shooting skills. Those days at the range, however, could be leading those gun owners in the wrong direction or providing a false sense of security. Statistics indicate criminal elements like darkness when they choose a time to prey on victims. All the recent riots and lootings that were covered on TV generally occurred under...
