Is This Rumored 300-inch Ohio Buck the Next Pope and Young No. 2?
A bowhunter from Ohio may have bagged the second largest non-typical whitetail buck since the Pope and Young Club started keeping records. The massive deer was harvested by Dan Coffman of The Break TV near Junction City last month. Additional details have yet to surface, but it is rumored that the buck scores just over 300 inches gross and approximately 286 inches net. If those measurements are accurate, then Coffman's buck could have a shot at becoming number 2 on Pope and Young's top 10 list for all time non-typical deer harvested by a bow and arrow. Pope and Young's current world record...
Video: Woman Shoots Parachute with Flare Gun during Skydive
Despite how the title sounds, this was no accident. It was instead a stunt by champion skydiver and instructor Brianne Thompson, who decided to heat up this dive by shooting---and burning---her parachute with a flare gun. Even for an experienced athlete, this is one stunt where a multitude of things could go very, very wrong.
As an instructor for AXIS Flight School in Arizona and a lifelong skydiver, Thompson has made over 4,000 jumps in her career, but this may be the first one where her canopy catches on fire. It should be noted that flare guns can be very dangerous. While not being...
Are There Millions of Coywolves in North America?
A recent article from The Economist stated a startling fact: that some researchers believe millions of coywolves already exist in North America. Yet how is it that a hybrid like the coywolf---a mix between wolf, coyote, and often dogs as well---can number in the millions when researchers say they are only found rarely in isolated packs? Well, the entire issue is a fairly confusing (and misleading)...
Video: California Police Department Swap Batons for Nunchucks
The police department of Anderson, California recently announced that it will begin replacing the traditional baton with nunchacku, an Okinawan martial arts weapon also known as nunchucks. According to KRCR, police say that the decision was made after the department began looking for a versatile weapon that allowed officers to control and subdue suspects rather than striking them. Unlike the relatively straightforward baton, nunchacku are traditionally two sticks connected by a length of chain...

Teenage Girl Contracts Bubonic Plague while Hunting in Oregon
Officials confirmed on Friday that a 16-year-old girl has contracted bubonic plague after participating in a hunt in Oregon. The teen, who remains unnamed, was on a hunting trip near Heppner on October 16. Five days after the hunt, she reported symptoms of plague and was admitted to a hospital. Her current condition is unknown. Experts from the Oregon Health Authority say that she likely contracted the plague from a flea bite and no other member of the hunting party has yet reported similar symptoms. In the last 20 years, only eight people have contracted bubonic plague in Oregon and all of...
Controlling Coyotes to Protect Deer Hunting: Part 1
Just about anyone who has hunted long enough has seen a coyote enter a field and clear it of deer by its presence alone. You may have noticed a deer fleeing through the woods with a coyote hot on its tail. These are all indicators that coyotes have an impact not only on deer populations but on deer hunting itself. But just how bad is it?
In this first article of a two-part series, I will look at some studies that have been done to illustrate how coyotes affect deer populations. In part two, I will offer some advice about what you can do about it and how much affect your efforts are likely...
Video: Jerry Miculek Recreates ‘Terminator’ Shotgun Trick
One of arguably the best scenes from Terminator 2: Judgement Day was when Arnold Schwarzenegger---as the T-800 Terminator---flipcocks aand shoots a Winchester 1887 while on a motorcycle. It was stylish, it was practical...and it was also painful as well. According to rumor, Arnold initially mistook a different gun, larger gun for the 1887 and tried to flipcock it, nearly breaking three of his fingers.
Ouch. We'll bet he made sure to ask the next time he tried that. It should be noted that the producers of the film later did procure real 1887, which was no mean feat as they were...
Video: Turkey Interrupts Deer Hunt By Landing on Hunter’s Bow
Hunts don't always go as planned, and I'm sure this hunter wished they had a turkey tag after this incident.
This hunter was sitting in a tree standing waiting for the perfect deer to walk by. However, an unexpected visitor caused a entertaining, but unwelcome distraction. A turkey decided to turn the hunter's bow into a temporary roost. After taking some pictures and recording this thirty second video the hunter eventually shooed off the turkey. If anything this video is a testament to the hunter's excellent camouflage and scent control.

Hunters Discover Massive “Gash” in Earth 150 Miles from Yellowstone Caldera
Hunters chasing after the antelope in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains have come across something quite unexpected: a crack in the earth about 700 yards long and 50 yards wide. The natural phenomenon was first recorded by Randy Becker and then later shared online by SNS Outfitters, an antelope hunting guide service, where the pictures soon started a buzz.
"While hunting this past weekend in the Bighorns, we came across an awesome example of how our earth is not as stable as you might think. Awesome forces at work here to move this much dirt!!" Becker wrote on Facebook.

3 Things You Need to Do to Prepare for Michigan Firearms Deer Season
Opening day of firearms deer season, November 15, is the single biggest day for Michigan outdoorsmen. It’s still a ways off, but it’ll be here before you know it. Fortunately, there’s still plenty of time to take care of the details that will help make 2015 a productive, safe deer season. Here are three things everyone should do over the next couple of weeks to make they’re ready for deer hunting.
1. Sight in your firearm(s)
This is simplest thing that hunters can do to help guarantee success. Face it: You only get so many chances to shoot a deer. Do you want to miss?
For the...
Video: Cleaning Up Your Leaf Piles With a Shotgun and Dragon’s Breath
Everyone hates yard work, and raking leaves can be especially tedious. With that being said, why not clean up your yard with incendiary shotgun rounds?
Well, the obvious answer is that shooting Dragon's Breath rounds in your yard is a fire hazard. However if you are popular YouTuber Iraqveteran8888 then shooting Dragon's Breath rounds is a great idea. The rounds spray a stream of molten metal which burns everything in it's path. That makes for the perfect ignition source for yard waste.

Ancient Lion Cubs Discovered in Siberian Permafrost
Russian researchers recently announced the discovery of a cache of fossils inside a cave in Yakutia, Russia that seem to have belonged to an ancient species of cave lions. The fossils, including at least two cubs, are believed to be more than 10,000 years old and are among the best preserved of any cave lion remains found until now.
“As far as I know, there has never been a prehistoric cat found with this level of preservation,” Des Moines University fossil expert Julie Meachen told the ...
Video: Swedish Hunter Swims Semi-frozen Lake to Save Dog
This month does not seem to have been a good one for Swedish hunting dogs. From last week's wolf attack to this half-frozen dog, moose season appears to have kicked off with its fair share of accidents.
Dogs play a big part in Scandinavian moose hunting. Since they usually track moose alone and far away from their owners, hunting dogs are generally equipped with a protective vest, GPS tracker, and sometimes even a bite guard to protect them from wolves. In this video, a concerned hunter...
Angler in British Columbia Lands Massive Albino Sturgeon
British Columbia fisherman Chad Helmer has been fishing for sturgeon nearly his entire life, but he had never seen anything quite like the fish he caught last Saturday while fishing on the Fraser River. Few people have ever seen an albino sturgeon, and with its pearly white skin and faint yellow lines, the 11-foot, 2-inch fish that Helmer caught certainly seemed to be a very large albino.
"We’ve never, ever seen one like that before,” Helmer told The...
Video: Hornady Announces New Heat Shielded Line of Ammunition
Ballistics engineers at Hornady noticed something odd after they used Doppler radar to track the flight path of their A-Max Bullets. The engineers noticed that the aerodynamic drag of the their bullets increased after traveling about 150 yards from the muzzle. The Eureka moment came when the engineers realized that the plastic tips were actually melting due to friction when traveling at high speeds. While the melting tips made little difference at short ranges it did affect long range shooters.
To solve the melting issues Hornady is introducing the...
Hurricane Patricia Leaves Shark in Alabama Woman’s Front Yard
It looks like the premise behind Sharknado may not be so outlandish after all. Whitney Constantine of Mobile, Alabama was more than a little surprised after discovering a dead shark in the middle of her front yard earlier this week. According to Constantine and her husband, the shark arrived after heavy rain and flooding caused by remnants of Hurricane Patricia, leaving the area covered in knee-deep water.
As the strongest hurricane to ever hit the Western Hemisphere caused widespread flooding in Mexico, Central America, and southern Texas. Due to its severity however, states as...
Video: How Would You Handle an Intruder on Your Food Plot?
It's not something that many hunters expect or plan for, but catching an intruder while hunting can be a complicated situation. Brodie Swisher---of Sportsmen Church and Thru the Season---was kicking back in his ground blind recently when he encountered this man on his property. What followed was a tense conversation as both men probed each other for information.
"I immediately knew this wasn’t just any trespasser," Swisher wrote on bowhunting.com. "The afternoon was...
Megladon Shark Teeth Wash up on North Carolina Coast
Three massive teeth several times the size of a regular shark's were found along the North Carolina coast earlier this month. According to the Holly Ridge---Surf City Online Gazette, which originally posted the photographs to Facebook, the teeth belonged to none other than the infamous megalodon, a species of giant-sized prehistoric sharks.
"I thought I spotted a large clam shell and then as the tide went out, I saw the tooth. My friend thought I was crazy diving into the water to grab the massive tooth!" said Mary...
