Ike Series Casting Rod
The Mitchell name has meant quality in fishing since I was a boy. My first Mitchell was a 300 spinning reel on a Garcia rod, and I was amazed at the quality and workmanship that went into it. In those days, I didn’t have a wall of rods and reels and that Mitchell 300 was the only reel I used in freshwater during most of my boyhood years. I still have it, and it occupies a place of honor in my sunroom with other heirloom fishing tackle that belonged to Mom and Dad and a beloved uncle. In fact, that reel was a gift from my Uncle Gorrell.
It was and still is mated up to the same Garcia 2506...
The Only Elk Herd Owned by the US Army
Did you know that the US Army actually owns a small elk herd in Virginia?
Odds are if you live near Defense Supply Center Richmond, you might have even seen them. The story of the Army's best known---as far as I can find, only---elk herd is a long one, and it is related to a decades-long promise.
The group of cervids is known as the Bellwood elk herd, otherwise known as "the elk that joined the army." They didn't exactly enlist through the normal process, however.
The elk are the benefactors of an old commitment that the Army made to the previous owners of the land they reside on....
Video: 10 Insane Underwater Pike Attacks from 2015
Here is yet another compilation of great pike attacks from the Emerald Isle. This video was taken by the guys over at Underwater Ireland and uses lures with no hooks. The point here is to test the effectiveness of the lures and see what draws in these aggressive fish the best. Of course, seeing these awesome pike bites is also neat as well.
One thing you won't notice in most pike attack videos is how fast these fish spit out the lure once they realized they've been duped. You can almost see the thought process in their heads...
The 10 Best Heavily “Customized” Redneck Boats
Necessity is the mother of invention, and nothing proves it more than these questionable watercraft. Constructed with leftover car parts, old furniture, and heaps of duct tape, it is a miracle that many of these "boats" actually manage to stay afloat.
The term “redneck” may be considered derogatory to some and a source of pride for others, but for the purposes of this list, we are defining it as someone who wisely uses the resources at their disposal while retaining a down-to-earth outlook. That said, we definitely don't recommend any of these for your next bass boat.
1. I doubt this...
Video: Is a Lion Roaming the Streets of Milwaukee?
A Milwaukee resident recently captured something much larger than a house cat on a cell phone video.
According to Kelly Brooks, a lion was captured on video walking through his backyard. As of right now experts are not able to confirm or deny reports of a lion being on the loose.
If the footage is to be believed, it certainly appears as though a lion could be out on the town, but where would it have come from? The Milwaukee zoo confirmed on twitter that all of their lions are accounted for, leading to the possibility that it could be an exceptionally large mountain lion. Watch the video...
The Best Kayaks for Anglers
My wife, Tami, and I love fishing from a kayak. It’s a peaceful yet exhilarating experience, but most importantly, it puts us on top of the fish. If you haven’t tried kayak fishing yet, you’re really missing out! For anyone looking to buy a kayak, the decision can be difficult. Basically, there are three types of kayaks: whitewater kayaks for fast-moving water, touring and recreational kayaks for flat water (slow moving rivers, lakes, and bays), and sea kayaks for open ocean paddling. All of these are suitable for fishing. No matter where you fish, saltwater or freshwater, Read more »
Selfie-taking Yellowstone Visitor Flung into Air by Bison
Yesterday, Yellowstone National Park officials confirmed reports that a bison-related injury had occurred after a Mississippi woman was attacked by one of the animals while trying to take a photo of it near Old Faithful on Tuesday.
The incident is the fifth of its kind at the park so far this season. Earlier this year a 16-year-old exchange student and a 62-year-old man were...
NRA: Obama Maneuvering for “Largest Gun Grab in American History”
A plan by the Obama administration to bar certain Social Security beneficiaries from owning a firearm has been heavily criticized by gun rights advocates as one of the most audacious moves to push gun control so far.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the move will integrate data from the Social Security Administration (SSA) into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), something that has never been done before. As a result, beneficiaries who have been declared...
Video: Security Camera Records Bear Break-in, Face-off with Resident
It's two in the morning and you're fast asleep on the couch. That's when you hear growling on the very edge of your consciousness, perhaps the scrape of long claws against wood. Suddenly, the door cracks open and you jolt awake, staring at two eyes in the darkness.
And then you keep staring, because the black bear looking back at you can't figure out whether it wants to come in or flee.
This scary---yet oddly humorous---scenario played out in Glendora, California when a homeowner woke up to find a bear trying, rather awkwardly, to enter his home. The bear looks a bit surprised to see...

Hands-on: 2016 Kawasaki Mule PRO-FX and Mule PRO-FXT Ranch Edition
The rolling hills near Paso Robles, California, covered with ancient oak trees and occasional masses of eucalyptus plants, were the setting for a recent trail ride showcasing Kawasaki’s latest Mule offerings, the 2016 Mule PRO-FX and PRO-FXT Ranch Edition. The Santa Margarita Ranch we were on, which was nearly 15,000 acres in size, was part cattle ranch, part vineyard, and part agri-tourism destination. It proved to be a great place to show what the Mules were all about.
The Mule PRO-FX
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT. As a person who spends a great deal of...
10 Terrible Boating Fails You Have to See to Believe
Sure, boating fails have great comedy potential---especially if you're not in the boat. However, we'd like to think that these mistakes also contain valuable lessons. While funny on the surface, it should be noted that many common boating mistakes can be dangerous and even life-threatening. Most of them can also be easily avoided.
Here are 10 examples of things you should watch out for while on, near, docking, or launching a boat. Some videos may contain strong language.
1. Make sure your engine is attached properly

“Gun Drone” Inventor under Federal Investigation
What started off as an after-school project for one Connecticut teenager is the now the focus of an investigation by local and federal authorities. Austin Haughwout, 18, built a homemade multi-rotor drone with what appeared to be a Kel-Tec PMR-30 pistol mounted onto it. A video of the drone firing the gun remotely quickly racked up over two million views on YouTube, but it also attracted the attention of Haughwout's neighbors in the town of Clinton, and law enforcement agencies as well.
"We are attempting to determine if any laws have been violated at this point. It would seem to the...
Video: ‘Kingsman’ Inspired Umbrella Slingshot
Sometimes when you watch a really good movie, you tend to obsess over it a little. If you're Joerg Sprave, the man behind YouTube's popular Slingshot Channel, that obsession usually involves some sort of overbuilt slingshot. Taking cues from Kingsman: The Secret Service, a British spy action-comedy, Joerg decided to build the strongest umbrella slingshot he could.
Naturally, he modified the "umbrella" into something resembling more of a spear or medieval ballista-bolt and then fired it out of a massive...
“Filleted Fish Cannot Be a Record”: The Loss of a World Record Dorado
When it comes to submitting a world record fish to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), there are a lot of rules. Arguably the most important is that the potential record has to be weighed on a certified scale in the presence of disinterested witnesses. Without that, the fish's weight is just hearsay. Unfortunately for Brian Lindsey, who claims to have caught an astounding 102-pound dorado off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, nobody bothered to tell him that.
Lindsey and a group of fellow anglers were fishing from the Pisces Sportfishing charter boat Shambala last week...
Indiana’s First Wild Bear in 144 Years is a “Problem,” Will Be Sent Back to Michigan
It looks like Indiana's newest house guest has already worn out his welcome. Last month state officials confirmed that the first wild black bear had been seen in the state since 1871, but the excitement quickly faded when the bear began ransacking homes near Michigan City while looking for food. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Read more »
The Best Ports for Michigan Salmon
Salmon fishing, always a big part of the summer angler’s agenda in Michigan, heats up in the second half of summer as the weather stabilizes and fish begin moving into the areas they’ll stage in before making their annual spawning runs. Now’s the time to book that trip on a charter boat or call your salmon fishing buddies to see if you can sneak aboard for a day or two, as before you know it, it’ll be fall.
The first question on many an angler’s mind is: Where do I go? And if action (meaning the most salmon) is the goal, Lake Michigan outshines the other Great Lakes in terms of...
Video: Man Crosses an Entire Open Lake on a Snowmobile
By now you've probably seen YouTube videos of people traveling short distances over open water on a snowmobile. This video takes that feat to a whole new level.
The rider in this video seems to think his snowmobile is a jet ski, and if you skip the first part of the video you could be excused for thinking the same thing. This is probably the furthest distance we have ever seen a snowmobile travel across open water.
The super-high horsepower and special treads obviously helped this rider, but he still has to be commended for this crazy stunt.

Video: Couple Denied Chance to Test Homemade Shark Cages by Lifeguard
With all of the recent media coverage of shark attacks, it's easy to see why people might want to take extra precautions at the beach. However, bringing your own shark cage is probably not a very good idea.
The couple in this video appears to have brought their own homemade shark cages to a beach on the Outer Banks. After watching the video, we noticed a few flaws in their personal shark protection devices. First off, the cages would have to be made of metal in order to offer the occupants protection from shark bites. That means the cage would prevent the wearer from going deeper into the...
Video: Sacred Japanese Deer Screams Bloody Murder
This video goes from zero to 100 really quick.
Sika deer in the city of Nara, Japan have a reputation for being friendly---if a little pushy---and are a popular tourist attraction due to their habit of "bowing" for food. It is a behavior that they seemed to have picked up from humans and it's likely that if you approach one of these roving herds with food, they'll "politely" hound you down until your hands are empty.
A group of English-speaking tourists were approached by this deer, which began to whine...
