Conservation Officer Suspended for Refusing to Kill Bear Cubs
A petition to reinstate British Columbia conservation officer Bryce Casavant has nearly reached 200,000 signatures as of Monday morning. Casavant was suspended without pay earlier this month when he refused an order to euthanize two black bear cubs---a male and female---after their mother was killed after repeatedly ransacking a mobile home near Port Hardy for food. Instead, Casavant retrieved the bear cubs and turned them over to a wildlife rehabilitation center in...
New York Suspends Key Parts of the SAFE Act
On Friday, New York Senate Republicans and the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a "memorandum of understanding" to suspend vital parts of the controversial SAFE Act. Led by Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport), lawmakers have reached an agreement with Governor Cuomo to halt any plans to conduct background checks on ammunition, suspend the development of an ammunition sales database, and to allow internet sales of ammunition in New York.
These provisions were once a key part of the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act of 2013, which was Read more »
Video: Man Bags Three Turkeys with One Shot
We've heard of killing two birds with one stone, but nailing three with a single shot? That's something well worth being caught on camera.
In the video below, three toms decide to treat this hunter by lining up in a neat row after approaching a decoy.
Depending on what kind of ammunition this man was using, it is likely to be one of the more economical methods of bagging turkey out there.

Texas Wildlife Pokes Fun at Fear over Redheaded Centipedes
It seems that every few years, the sighting of a giant redheaded centipede causes a wave of fright across the internet. So much so that Texas Wildlife and Parks have poked fun at the phenomenon by acknowledging it as one of the state's most terrifying creatures, but, alas, "no match for a shoe."
The agency recently posted a picture of a Texas redhead found in Hill County, which quickly---and predictably---went viral. The truth is, encounters with the...
The Top 10 Deadliest Snakes in North America
These guys are why we have the big boots.
There are over 20 species of venomous snakes in North America. In the United States, there is at least one species of venomous snake in every state except Alaska. About 8,000 people are bitten every year, but thanks to modern medicine, antivenom keeps the number of fatalities at only a handful.
In this list, we have complied a list of the continent's most deadly snakes due to either the potency of their venom, their aggressiveness, or the sheer number of deaths attributed to them. Venomous snakes rarely bite humans, but sometimes it can be all...
Video: Man Teaches Seagull to Tap Dance
It's amazing what you can accomplish during a lunch break.
Seagulls may not be accustomed to dancing for their food, but that doesn't mean it's out of the question either. According to the person who took this video, they managed to teach a seagull in Newquay, England how to tap dance over the span of a short lunch break. Sure enough, the bird is more than happy to put on its imitation of Riverdance when the prospect of food comes up.
We especially like how the other, less talented seagull lingers nearby for a chance to steal food from its friend. Such is...
FBI: Background Check System Failed, Let Charleston Shooter Buy Gun
In a meeting with reporters on Friday, FBI Director James Comey said that Dylann Roof, who is accused of killing nine people in a church shooting on June 17, should not have been able to purchase a firearm. A breakdown in the FBI's background check system allowed Roof to purchase a .45 caliber handgun on April 11, days after he turned 21, and use it to murder nine people in Charleston's historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
“This case rips all of our hearts out, but the thought that an error on our part is connected to a gun this person used to slaughter these people is...

Texas Man Shoots Alligator, Finds Human Remains of Man Who Mocked It
Texas Parks and Wildlife confirmed that the alligator who attacked and killed 28-year-old Tommie Woodard was fatally shot this week. Woodard was killed while swimming near a marina in Orange, Texas last Friday.
Witnesses said the man disregarded numerous signs warning visitors about alligator activity, and mocked the animals before plunging into the water. Game wardens recovered some of his remains from Adams Bayou later in the day.
"A game warden crew searched the area nightly throughout the weekend for a large, aggressive alligator with no success," stated a Read more »
OHub’s Craziest Stories of the Week: Dog Bears and a Redneck Water Slide
Can you imagine living with black bears for two years while thinking they were dogs? How about---nearly---shooting a seagull with a 105mm cannon from a Scottish castle? For this week’s episode of the OHUB Top 5, Derek gives pointers in how to recognize bears from dogs, and why a tractor-operated water slide might not be the best idea.
The lack of barking---and occasional mauling---should have given that first one away.

Photo: Eerie “Sleigh Hoofed” Moose Sighted in Alaska
Is that moose walking on slippers? No, as it turns out, those strange curved things on its feet are actually its own hooves. An Anchorage resident recently took the photo embedded below of a moose with what appears to be "sleigh hoof" syndrome, a symptom of copper deficiency or an overabundance of other minerals.

Video: Girl Uses Slingbow to Remove Baby Tooth
It seems that using a bow to remove baby teeth has become a new fad, as you can see here and here. We're not sure how to feel about it, but it sure beats waiting for them to fall off on their own---and you can avoid that gross sucking sound kids make when they play with loose teeth.
This girl, however, seems to have perfected a new way of bow-assisted tooth removal: the slingbow.

Canadian Angler Punches, Shoots Mountain Lion to Save Dog
What started off as a relaxing fishing trip on the British Columbia Coast soon turned into a fight for survival after one angler was confronted by a hungry mountain lion.
Shawn Hanson of Vancouver Island was just about to cook up a recently-caught salmon near a Ucluelet beach on July 3 when he heard a yelp. The noise came from his young dachshund puppy, Bailey, who was being dragged into the bushes by a mountain lion. The cougar was a small one, but it was more than large enough to overpower the young dachshund pup. Hanson knew he had to react quickly to save his dog.
"I grab Bailey...

Quiz: Can You Identify These Bear Subspecies?
Did you know that there are 16 subspecies of the American black bear alone? Don't worry, we're not going to quiz you on all of them. In fact, most are nearly impossible to tell apart without context---and some aren't even recognized as a subspecies depending on who you're asking. Brown bears have it much easier, although they can still be pretty hard to differentiate.
In this quiz, we're going to test your knowledge of bear subspecies to the limit. Be warned, it's pretty hard to get 10 out of 10 unless you're some kind of bear expert (or really, really good at guessing). To keep things...
