Photo: Epic Seagull vs. Eagle vs. Seagull Battle

Wed, 07/15/2015 - 15:29

Depending on how you look at it, this strange photograph is either about the utter dominance of a bald eagle over its prey, or a valiant rescue attempt by a seagull to rescue one of its own. Either way, it was an epic aerial battle that its photographer isn't likely to forget soon. According to the US Department of the Interior, the photo was snapped by David Canales, who was kayaking near Prince William Sound in Alaska. In case you were wondering, the eagle won. Bald eagles are known to prey occasionally on gulls and despite a courageous attempt by the second gull to save its buddy,...

Wed, 07/15/2015 - 13:31

One man in Topeka, Kansas is praising the state's new permitless carry law, which he credits for allowing him to stop an alleged robbery at a sports and outdoors store this past Friday. Joey Tapley, 24, was shopping at Academy Sports and Outdoors in Topeka when he witnessed three teenagers---aged 16 to 17---stealing firearms and cash from the store. Security footage showed that at least one of the teens were armed with what appeared to be a handgun, and witnesses said he used it to threaten a clerk during the robbery. When they fled with the stolen guns, Tapley said he followed them...

Specifically, this gelatin was hit with a Hornady 750-grain A-MAX, which boasts a devastating 13,241 foot-pounds of muzzle energy and a velocity of over 2,800 feet per second at the muzzle. Of course, this round is hardly ever meant for close range. Tue, 07/14/2015 - 15:40

Last week North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed HB 640 and lifted the state's longstanding ban on Sunday hunting, but not without introducing a host of restrictions. The bill, also known as the Outdoor Heritage Act, will still prohibit firearm hunting on public land, hunting between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and hunting within 500 yards of a church or building not on the private property during Sundays. Firearms also remain barred from Sunday hunting in Wake and Mecklenburg counties, and other counties can draft local ordinances to ban the activity as soon as...

Tue, 07/14/2015 - 15:34

This juvenile great white shark had beach-goers and staff to thank for a timely rescue after it stranded itself on a beach near Chatham, Massachusetts. The great white was reportedly chasing after seagulls---which larger sharks can consume by attacking them from underwater---shortly before it beached itself. It's not exactly a baby anymore, but it can certainly is helpless enough when rescuers came to its aid with buckets of water. Visitors and beach staff kept the shark hydrated before using a rope to tow the shark back into the water. It took some time, but rescuers were eventually...

How to Win the Battle Against Bugs This Summer

Tue, 07/14/2015 - 14:24

There are 3,500 subspecies of mosquitoes worldwide, with about 600 of those varieties of the little bloodsuckers living in North America. That’s a lot of opportunity for these pests to cause their annoyances whenever we are outdoors. Plus, they can transmit at least five different diseases. Add ticks and black flies to the equation and we have a long list of reasons we hate these common insects we encounter when we go outdoors. There are a lot of things you probably don’t know about mosquitoes---like the fact that only the female mosquitoes bite (they need the blood to nurture their...

Elk Herd Attacks Picnicking Family, Two Injured

Tue, 07/14/2015 - 13:25

An elk herd in Arizona's Hualapai Mountain Park may have forgotten that they were elk, not bears, when they crashed a family picnic for food and ended up attacking two visitors last week. According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department (GFD), the attack was unprovoked and likely caused by the elk becoming too familiar with humans. “They were not feeding the animals, but this encounter was clearly the result of past behaviors of the public.” said agency spokesperson Zen...

Why July is the Best Month for Michigan Fishing

Tue, 07/14/2015 - 13:17

Stable weather is an angler’s friend, and July provides perhaps the most stable weather of the year in Michigan. Many anglers believe it offers the best fishing, too. There are good reasons. Less wind and less-frequent rains improve water clarity. River levels are more stable and less prone to high flow and dirty water. And because fish are cold-blooded critters, they are typically more active in warm water, so they feed more often. Plainly put, they are generally more willing to bite. There are some exceptions. Trout, for example, prefer cooler water temperatures than many other...

Tue, 07/14/2015 - 11:11

Hunting with birds of prey is impressive, but it's usually only effective for small game. However, That's not the case if you have access to Mongolian golden eagles. This video highlights the incredible Mongolian tradition of hunting wolves with a golden eagle. That might sound unbelievable until you realize that golden eagles bred for falconry purposes can have wingspans over nine feet and can weigh over 27 pounds. That impressive size allows them to take down central Asian wolves. This ancient hunting technique has been used by Mongolians for thousands of years, and Genghis Khan...

Survival Scenario Snacks: Fish and Amphibians

Tue, 07/14/2015 - 08:16

This week we're going to talk about seafood and...pond food. Continuing our series on edible critters that you can harvest in a survival scenario, fish and amphibians are easy to catch and highly palatable. They are also full of vital nutrients and perhaps most importantly, fat. How did you think grizzly bears got so big? Hint: it certainly wasn't from eating pine nuts and tubers. As we touched on in the last article, hunting for meat is one of the last things you should do in a...

Crowdfunding Campaign for “Hot Tub Hammock” Raises $42,000

Mon, 07/13/2015 - 15:52

If there is one thing a lot of people miss during long hunting and camping trips, it is access to hot water. Sinking into a nice, warm bath will have to be something that most people put aside until they get home, but one Oregon-based inventor wants to change that. Earlier this month Benjamin Frederick launched his Kickstarter campaign for the "Hydro Hammock," a contraption that essentially turns a high-tensile-strength hammock into a portable heated bathtub. "The idea for this came to me by chance. I ordered...

Mon, 07/13/2015 - 15:26

When this lion spotted a tasty hippo carcass in South Africa's Sabi River, it couldn't resist trying to get a free meal. However, it soon found itself outmatched by the river and instead of chowing down, it was holding onto the hippo for dear life. At one point the cat was even swept away by the current, but eventually made its way back onto the carcass and took a few half-hearted bites. It may not have exactly been life-threatening, but this meal certainly wasn't as easy as lion thought it was going to be. https://youtu.be/jYRbYgDbD08...
