Video: Snake Steals Young Angler’s Perch, Nearly Slithers Away
Who could say no to perch for lunch? Obviously not this garter snake, who tried its best to make a sneaky getaway after stealing a fish from one very enthusiastic angler-in-training.
"My son caught a little perch, reeled it up to the shore and as it flopped around, it unhooked itself. As soon as that happened, a garter snake comes out of nowhere and grabs it!" Wrote Cindy Kruller on YouTube. "My son started screaming about a snake stealing his fish, so I grabbed my camera and filmed the chase. The snake ended up dropping the fish and we were able to get it back in the water."
The snake...
Video: Tourists Get Way Too Close to Montana Black Bears, Nearly Get Mauled
The video below, recorded by Winston Greely and posted to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Facebook page on May 8, shows what appears to be a black bear sow and her cubs running across a bridge near Gardiner.
When the recording starts, several groups of camera-equipped tourists in dangerously close proximity to the animals are running away from them in a (relatively) leisurely manner. As the bears get closer, an onlooker yells "Keep going! Go, go, go!" and the would-be photographers pick up their pace.

Country Singer Brantley Gilbert Shows His Support for 2A Rights with New Tattoo
Country star Brantley Gilbert is already well-known for his tattoo collection, but the singer recently added his biggest contribution yet with a massive back tattoo that includes two handguns and the full text from the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. According to Gilbert, the tattoo was done in parts by friend and artist Carl Grace, who added the 1911-style pistols in February and later added text as well as the stylized word "Amendment" across the musician's shoulder blades.
"I wanted to take my support of the 2nd amendment to another level, so my boy Carl Grace came...
Pacers Star Paul George Wins His First Fishing Tournament
It's no secret that many professional athletes, such as Paul George of the Indiana Pacers, love to fish. The relaxing and therapeutic nature of angling often gives athletes a much-needed release from the stress of training and high-stakes games. However, sometimes they get really good at fishing---good enough to win tournaments.
George recently won his first bass fishing tournament this week in Indiana's Geist Reservoir, and he did not do it alone. The second angler on his two-man team was none other than professional fisherman Jacob Wheeler.
“These things are pretty intense but I’m...
Video: Would You Trust Your Life to a Bulletproof Baseball Cap?
Meet the BulletSafe Bulletproof Baseball Cap. Visually, it's pretty hard to tell from a distance that this cap actually has a small bulletproof plate directly in front of the user's forehead---this is one cap you won't be wearing backwards.
But does it work? And even if it stops the bullet, what kind of damage will be inflicted to the poor test dummy's head? Well, according to BulletSafe, it actually should be quite safe.
"The amount of energy in a handgun round is high, but not as high as some people seem to believe," the company stated in its Read more »
Video: This Bear Walking on Its Hind Legs is Incredibly Disturbing
Asiatic black bears differ from their American counterparts in many ways, but one interesting fact is that these bears are also shaped so they can walk for long periods of time on just two legs. This is because although they have relatively small paws, Asian black bears have larger heel pads than other bear species and can walk upright for up to a quarter mile.
Of course, they won't be exactly sprinting. Bears are still much faster on two legs, and the slow awkward gait of the bear in the video below is somewhat off-putting. Perhaps this is where all the Bigfoot rumors came...
Why You Need to Experience Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Pike Fishing
You don’t hear much about pike any more. Except for ice fishing, when the tip-ups come out, pike have sort of faded into obscurity in most of Michigan. But there is one exception: Upper Peninsula anglers still like pike. And there’s a reason for that---they are fairly plentiful, willing, and, if you know how to deal with the Y bones, pretty darn good table fare.
Ken Lee, a well-known walleye guide on Little Bay de Noc, says he will take a day off walleye fishing any day he can to go pike fishing. I’ve fished for pike with Lee, in early September, on Little Bay a few years back. We...

Video: Leaping Bobcat Nearly Turns Turkey Hunter into the Hunted
Bobcats aren't like your average house cat. These felines are about 40 pounds of tense, coiled muscle with razor-sharp claws and an inclination to give your face an extreme makeover if you get too close. As this hunter found out the hard way, a bobcat only lets itself seen when it wants to be seen.
"Craziest dam [sic] thing I've ever seen turkey huntin for sure!" wrote Bobby Greathouse, who uploaded the video to his Facebook page. "I'm just glad I didn't squeal like a little school girl."
Greathouse interrupted his hunt to film the cat, but it soon made it all too clear that it did not...

Anti-poaching Documentary Featuring Craig Boddington Aims to Educate
Africa, with its diversity of wildlife and vast open spaces, is a hot spot for poachers. Perhaps nowhere else in the world is the life of a ranger more difficult---and more dangerous. Across Africa, rangers find themselves hard pressed to cover all the ground that they are tasked to protect, often enduring grueling physical conditions and facing dangers from poachers, wild animals, and even armed militias.
These dedicated men and women have developed new strategies and tactics to make up for what they lack in numbers. The Zambeze Delta Safari's elite anti-poaching unit has about two...
5 Essentials for the Discerning AK Owner
Within the past few years, AKs have steadily become more popular in the United States. As such, the accessory and gear aftermarkets for the platform have also expanded. Whether it’s because the base guns themselves are more expensive or simply that shooters are developing a serious appreciation for Kalashnikovs, people are more willing to spend money on them.
This is a good thing. It lets shooters wring the maximum possible potential out of their firearms. Anyone who says that AKs are only good as a barebones, junky “trunk guns” probably hasn’t shot them enough and learned what...
Video: Custom .70 Caliber “Turbine” Shotgun Slug Meets Ballistic Gel
The last time YouTube's Taofledermaus played with these custom .70 caliber "rifled" slugs, they seemed like they could do a bit of damage. This time around, Tao had the aid of some ballistic gel to get a better picture of what this unique-looking slug can do. The aluminum slug was manufactured by Tim Hamilton, a prototype machinist who likes missing around with experimental designs. He designed the turbine-like slugs for Taofledermaus to see if their unique shape...
3D-printed Firearms Designer Sues Federal Government
It is now roughly two years since Cody Wilson released the plans for the "Liberator" pistol, a single-shot .380 handgun that is believed to be the world's first fully 3D-printed firearm. The blueprints for the Liberator were posted online free of charge and were downloaded more than 100,000 times before the US Department of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) stepped in and removed the files.
At the time, federal officials claimed that the availability of the blueprints, which allowed...
Video: Anglers in Boat Nearly Struck by Low-flying Plane
The start of the 40th annual Surubí National Festival in Argentina---a world-famous fishing extravaganza---was nearly marred by tragedy earlier this week when a low-flying plane almost crashed into an angler's boat. In a video taken by Mariano Bradanini and uploaded to YouTube, you can see a plane clearly flying just above a boat. It is not currently known whether the plane meant to come so close to the boat, or if the pilot had briefly lost control of the aircraft.
According to event organizers, stunt planes were part of this year's opening festivities. Some of the planes...
Hero Dog Recognized for Protecting Teen from Coyotes after Deadly Car Crash
On a sunny day last June in the wilderness of British Columbia, 16-year-old Joseph Phillips-Garcia found himself in the dirt with a broken femur and a shattered collar bone. The teen was the sole survivor of a deadly car crash that killed his aunt, cousin, and a family friend. For the next 40 hours, Phillips-Garcia's only companion was his four-year-old king shepherd named Sako, who warded off a pack of coyotes and other predators and kept the teen warm at night. In recognition of the canine's heroism, Sako was inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame on Monday, joining 140 other dogs, 27...
Anonymous Armslist Seller Seeks to Trade Gator for Gun(s)
Armslist.com is a popular website where gun owners can sell, buy, or barter for firearms. These kinds of trades usually involve guns, accessories, or outdoor gear, but rarely involve animals and certainly not a three-foot alligator. Yet that is exactly what one person in Akron, Ohio put up for trade on the website.
The listing asked for $250 in cash or a Ruger SR22---or any number of firearms in 9x19mm, .32, or...
Video: Olympic Athlete Pulls Out Daughter’s Tooth with a Javelin
We've all seen the videos of parents using their bows to remove their children's baby teeth, but when US Olympic athlete Bryan Clay's daughter had a loose tooth, he decided to us his javelin. Clay, who won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics' decathlon and a gold in 2008 by throwing a javelin 72 meters (236 feet), has retired from track and field events, but he made an exception for the video below. After watching the video it actually looked fairly painless, and you can hear his daughter Ellie calmly ask "Where'd it go?"
What you use javelins for once you're retired. ...
The 5 Best AR-15s Under $1,000
The great Obama AR-15 Sale of 2013 is over, sort of. Yes, fears about political shenanigans like green tip 5.56mm ammo bans and other nonsensical moves are driving sales, but we’ve moved on from the time when there were no ARs of any type available on the shelves. In fact, as the market has chilled a bit, prices also have chill-axed, so there are lots and lots of good deals out there.
During the boom, everyone who owned a pair of Vise Grips got into the AR manufacturing business. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It does, however, make it a lot harder for prospective buyers to know...
Video: Verne Troyer Meets a Gun Bigger Than He Is
At barely 2 feet and 8 inches, Verne Troyer---of Austin Powers fame---is one of the shortest men in the world. That does not however, keep him from being a talented actor and stunt performer. While out on the range with Richard Ryan, Troyer meets a gun bigger than he is---a .50 BMG Barrett rifle, which is usually anywhere from about 4 to 5 feet. To illustrate the difference, .50 BMG round is about the size of Troyer's forearm.
"It's huge!" Troyer remarked.
Unfortunately, he never got the chance to shoot the rifle, but Troyer does get some hands-on firearms training courtesy...
