Quiz: Do You Know Everything There is to Know about Glocks?

Fri, 05/15/2015 - 14:53

Few firearms are as well-known as the Glock pistol. The polymer-framed, semiautomatic pistol is considered by some to be a massive step forward for handguns, and by others as an ugly gun with all the aesthetics of a brick. No matter where you stand, it is hard to deny that as a whole, Glocks are some of the most popular and best-selling firearms of the the last three decades. Their ease of use, high capacity, and affordability has made Glock firearms nearly ubiquitous among both gun owners and law enforcement agencies across the globe. If you're not a fan of Glocks, that's fine, but we're...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: This Side of the Horizon

Fri, 05/15/2015 - 14:28

With his eyes glued to his binoculars, my guide’s voice muttered, “Don’t you think you could have found one somewhere on this side of the horizon?” I burst out laughing, as Dan Stobbe now turned to look at me with a grin. “Damn, that’s a long way from here, Dunn!” Stobbe continued. “I’m not sure he’s not up there in the Northwest Territories! How’d you ever spot him without a spotting scope?” “I just kept looking for a speck of white anywhere shy of the skyline,” I answered, still amused at his initial question. Although our binos were not...

Scientists Discover First-ever Warm-blooded Fish

Fri, 05/15/2015 - 10:45

A new study by scientists at NOAA Fisheries has revealed the world's first fully warm-blooded fish, but it is not a newly discovered species. In fact, the fish is one that is already well-known to anglers---the opah, or moonfish as it is commonly called. In a press release on Tuesday, NOAA Fisheries confirmed that the opah circulates heated blood throughout its body much like birds or mammals, albeit at a much lower temperature. "Fish that typically inhabit such cold depths tend to be slow and sluggish,...

Video: Anglers Crack Up after Tarpon Jumps over Dock to Escape

Fri, 05/15/2015 - 10:09

Captains Blair Wiggins and Mark Nichols are both seasoned tarpon anglers, and they know that the narrow canals of Satellite Beach in Florida hide some pretty big fish. In fact, the tarpon here are so big that when hooked, they have been known to knock floorboards straight off of the docks while trying to escape. These torpedo-shaped fish have a reputation for their spectacular leaping ability---and they love showing off. However, Mark and Blair never expected one to escape by tumbling over a dock and flopping its way to freedom. The fishermen reacted the only way they could, with...

Video: How to Reload the “Big Gun” on an A-10 Warthog

Thu, 05/14/2015 - 15:41

The A-10 Thunderbolt, commonly known as the Warthog, is an intimidating aircraft. Its most distinctive feature is perhaps its nose-mounted General Dynamics GAU-8/A Avenger cannon, a weapon of such destructive potential that it is often listed among the most powerful aircraft cannons ever designed. Firing 30mm armor-piercing shells, the seven-barrel cannon can fire up to 4,200 rounds per minute up to a distance of 20,000 feet. A burst from the Avenger cannon is equatable to a small earthquake. Designed for either incendiary or uranium depleted rounds, the Avenger cannon can destroy even...

Thu, 05/14/2015 - 15:19

New Hampshire wildlife officials recently announced that starting in 2016, hunters will be banned from using chocolate to bait bears. The decision came about after a number of bear deaths in 2014 that are believed to have been caused by an ingredient in chocolate, theobromine, that is poisonous to certain animals. Last September, the deaths of four black bears near the same bait site in northern New Hampshire made national headlines and spurred...

Thu, 05/14/2015 - 14:57

This is what happens when snakes get greedy. According to 891 ABC Adelaide, snake owner Aaron Rouse was using tongs to feed his pet python rats when the snake decided it wanted more. The python, named "Winston," latched onto the tongs and swallowed the utensil whole. "I tried to prise him off the tongs but we didn't have any hope of that at all," Rouse said. The snake eventually discovered, to its...

Oklahoma Governor Vetoes Popular Pro-gun Bill

Thu, 05/14/2015 - 14:06

On Monday, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin vetoed a popular bill that would have restricted private businesses from banning guns at public lands like parks, recreational areas, and fairgrounds. The bill, SB 41, passed the state House with widespread support in a 88-4 vote in April, and sailed through the Senate with a 39-7 vote earlier in May. Legislators say they are considering reworking the bill to gain Governor Fallin's approval, but if no compromise can be reached, they will push for an override of the veto. The bill was popular among pro-gun advocates since it required public spaces...

Video: Elusive, Parasite-infested “Ghost Shark” Spotted Near Underwater Volcano

Thu, 05/14/2015 - 13:45

Meet the ghost shark. Also known as a rabbitfish, spookfish, or more formally as a chimaera, these mysterious creatures are among the oldest living fish species still alive today. Their closest living relatives are sharks, but the two animals split off into different evolutionary branches over 400 million years ago. Chimaeras differ significantly from "modern" shark species in that their jaws are actually fused to their skulls. This means that instead of having razor-sharp teeth, chimaera have grinding tooth plates instead. This video of what appears to be a blind, parasite-infested ghost...

Henry Big Boy Rifle in .357 Magnum

Thu, 05/14/2015 - 10:33

Pistol-caliber carbines are awesome; even more so when they share ammo with a powerful sidearm. This was the original reason why I sought the Henry Big Boy rifle---I wanted a carbine to share ammo with my go-to outdoors gun, the Ruger GP100 Match Champion. While the .357 Magnum round is known for its fight-stopping capability, can it truly compete with lever-gun classics like .30-30, or is it doomed to share the fate of the allegedly-anemic .30 Carbine? Manufactured in Bayonne, New Jersey, current-production Henry Rifles share very...

Video: Girl Catches Big Bass with Tiny Pole

Thu, 05/14/2015 - 06:56

Sometimes you don't need expensive gear to reel in big fish. This young girl, identified only as "Zoe," managed to pull in a massive bass on what appears to be a tiny, pink beginner's rod. "While this little girl was fishing with her father, she managed to catch a fish nearly the size of her own body! No professional fishing pole required..." read the video's description on Youtube. Some skeptics mused that the girl's father may have helped her along---namely by catching the fish himself and attaching it to her line---but we'd like to believe that this victory was all her...

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 14:40

Jeremiah Raber, the founder and owner of Nutshellz, recently launched a new Kickstarter campaign to fund his latest line of bulletproof groin protectors. Of course, while the ability of the Nutshellz to stop a bullet may steal the spotlight, Raber said that he originally created the state-of-the-art cup for athletes---specifically mixed martial arts fighters, who compete in a sport where just one powerful kick could end a fight. "Most cups can’t withstand the full force of a well-timed kick, and I have...

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 14:27

Some Indiana hunters looking forward to using their rifles in the upcoming deer season may have run up against a wall. In a recently released memo, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stated that it does not recommend approving a proposal that would allow hunters to use larger-caliber centerfire rifles, citing a lack of support among hunters and heavy opposition to the rule change. The decision ultimately rests in the hands of the state's Natural Resources Commission, but according to the Read more »

Michigan’s Best Bass Fisheries

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 14:17

Bass season---the catch-and-keep part---is right around the corner. And if anyone in Michigan or traveling to it is wondering where to go, the answer is fairly simple: practically anywhere! The quality of Michigan’s bass fisheries is almost unparalleled. How else can you explain Bassmaster, the bible of American bass fishing, picking Lake St. Clair as the best bass lake in America a couple of years back when I can name a half dozen that are just as good or better? Michigan, blessed with an abundance of water, offers outstanding bass fishing for both largemouths and...

Shooters: Are You Milking the Trigger?

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 12:38

As I was born in the not-very-rural oceanside town of Corona Del Mar, I know less about milking cows than I do about birthing llamas. But I'm pretty sure that effective cow milking involves squeezing the udders with various degrees of pressure to get whole milk, butter, and cottage cheese direct from the factory, so to speak. I have no idea how to get chocolate out of there. If I ever tried to milk Ol’ Bessie, she’d have the 4-H Club protective services tactical squad battering down my barn door in no time. Since the motion of milking a cow apparently involves squeezing some part of...
