Want to Try Something New? Give Trading a Hunt a Shot
I love to hunt big game---especially whitetail---and I have decent deer hunting where I live in northern Minnesota, but my chances of shooting a really nice, mature buck there are pretty low. I can put a deer in the freezer with no problem, but I do not live in an area where big bucks are common. I have to go somewhere else to find a big deer.
But I do have two things that many outdoorsmen do not: fantastic fishing and bears. Lots of bears. A while back it occurred to me that I had something a lot of other people want, and it had some value to them. I started swapping...
Tennessee Angler’s Rescue of Drowning Man Caught on Video
A 19-year-old college student is being hailed as a hero after he dived into a lake to save a drowning boater last Monday. According to WVLT, Daniel Baldwin was at Norris Lake in Tazewell, Tennessee to fish for smallmouth bass and to film for his YouTube channel, Fishing with Leinad.
He did not expect that his trip would include saving someone's life.
"I could win the Bass Master...
TrackingPoint Announces Financial Difficulties, No Longer Accepting Orders
TrackingPoint announced on Monday through its website that the company is suffering from financial difficulties and will no longer be accepting customer orders. The Austin-based "smart scope" manufacturer made waves in recent years for its "Precision Guided Firearm" (PGF) technology, which allowed users to tag and accurately shoot targets at long range. The company has not yet elaborated on its current problems, but some sources close to the TrackingPoint say that the firm may be on its last legs.
Anonymous and unconfirmed sources told both Read more »
Video: Ravens Attack Bear Climbing Electric Tower to Eat Their Eggs
How far will one bear go for some scrambled eggs? If they're hungry enough, they sky's the limit---literally. This brave bear apparently decided to climb a massive electric tower just to pilfer some eggs from what appeared to be a raven's nest. The encounter was photographed by Mossberg's Director of Media Relations, Linda Powell, during a wood bison hunt in Alberta last week. Commenters who saw the pictures were initially skeptical, with many musing that the photos were just clever Photoshop trickery. Mossberg quickly dispelled those rumors with a video recording.
"Sorry to burst the...
ATF Seizes 3,000 Recievers from AR-15 Manufacturer Stag Arms
Earlier this month the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) filed a request to keep some of the seized gun parts it took from Connecticut gun manufacturer Stag Arms last year.
According to the Hartford Business Journal, court documents revealed that federal agents seized more than 3,000 lower receivers without serial numbers, which the ATF says is a violation of the National Firearms Act (NFA). Under the NFA, firearm manufacturers are legally obligated to stamp...
Video: Shooter Nearly Knocks Herself Out with S&W 500 Revolver
This is what happens when you say you can handle it, but you can't.
In fact, it seems like at least half of the videos on YouTube showing a Smith & Wesson Model 500 feature at least one person smacking themselves in the face with it. While this may be amusing, handing off a powerful revolver to someone who is unprepared for it can be dangerous.
This woman almost manages to knock herself out with one of the big wheelguns---or worse.

No matter what type of gun you're using, always remember to practice basic firearm safety. In the case of the S&W...
7 Freaky Examples of “Cactus Buck” Syndrome
Is that a cactus growing out of that buck's head?
Hunters who have never seen a so-called "cactus buck" may be utterly bewildered the first time they spot one of these strange deer. These bucks show no interest in mating, sometimes have the body of a doe, and perhaps most notably, have cactus-like growths where their antlers should be.
Card
These are what hunters call "cactus bucks." The term is a catch-all for a certain type of antler deformity, but "true" cactus bucks are animals suffering from lowered...
Video: Swedish Man Channels Inner Viking and Terrifies Charging Bear
We here at OutdoorHub like to consider ourselves chroniclers of the eternal struggle between bear and man---of who can manage to scare the crap out of the other more often and most effectively.
Two bouts on record so far: the "California man walks into bear while texting" title fight of 2012, and the "drinking man rounds corner, walks smack-dab into bear" meet up of sometime last week....
Video: Hiker Stumbles into Snake Pit
Why did it have to be snakes?
If Indiana Jones knew that one of the risks of hiking was stumbling into a pit of snakes, he might never go hiking again. Thankfully, the person who recorded the video below is not Indiana Jones, and he had what appears to be a camera on a stick.
Without endangering himself, the man pokes the camera into the snake den to get an up-close view of what appears to be some sort of mating ball.
These kinds of gatherings are not uncommon for certain snake species, and if you're interested in finding one, you might want to consider a trip to Manitoba,...

UPS Refuses to Ship Suppressors
On a daily basis, United Parcel Service (UPS) delivers over 15 million packages to 6.1 million customers in more than 220 countries and territories around the world. It now appears that those packages will no longer include firearm suppressors. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), UPS recently made the decision to stop shipping suppressors, even between licensees. As of yet, UPS has not given a reason for its abrupt change in policy.
"NSSF is working with UPS executives to determine what prompted the enforcement of this unwarranted policy. We are unaware of any...
Video: Can You Grill the Perfect Steak with Lava?
What does it take to cook the perfect steak? You need a choice cut of meat, seasonings, the perfect temperature, and a number of other things.
One way to get that "just right" temperature is by using slowly poured lava, of course. It might be one of the most innovative and dangerous ways of cooking, so don't expect to see it in your local steakhouse anytime soon. The video below, produced by Jenny Wysocki of the Syracuse University Lava Project, shows it in action.
You might need a special "apron," too.

16-year-old Exchange Student Gored by Bison in Yellowstone
Bison may appear to be docile animals, but they can be deadly when provoked. Officials at Yellowstone National Park announced on Saturday that a 16-year-old Taiwanese exchange student was gored and seriously injured while taking pictures of bison near Old Faithful. The encounter happened Friday afternoon when the student and her host family joined a group of tourists watching buffalo graze near a trail.
"According to first hand reports, the group was somewhere between three and six feet from the bison. The girl turned her back to the bison to have her picture taken when the bison lifted...
Video: Bobcat Squares Off with Coyote
In their respective niches, the bobcat and coyote are two of the most successful small predators in North America. Yet what happens when you put these two not-so-apex predators up against one another? A lucky bike rider managed to capture this rarely-seen confrontation on tape while at River Legacy Park in Arlington, Texas.
As you can see in the video, the bobcat quickly assumed the dominant role and slowly but surely pushed the coyote (and the biker) out of its way. This cat may be small, but as one commenter noted, "Bobcats have the heart of a lion."
The animals also appear to be...
Video: Florida Teenager “Rides” Whale Shark
In what could only be described as an act of immense carelessness, a Florida teenager apparently attempted to "ride" a whale shark off the coast of Destin.
You can clearly see the young man, identified as Cody Garland, holding on to some part of the massive fish. At one point, he says that he's standing on top of it.
While the filter-feeder likely posed no physical threat to Garland, whale sharks are considered a vulnerable species by the IUCN. Harassing them...
UK Commercial Fishermen Shocked by Massive 130-pound Eel
Commercial fishermen trawling off the coast of the United Kingdom near Plymouth were stunned last Thursday when they brought aboard a seven-foot, roughly 130-pound conger eel. The eel had gotten caught up in the trawler's nets and was already dead by the time it was brought out of the water, but its sheer size surprised even the fishermen on board.
"What a beast!" Plymouth Fisheries posted on Twitter, alongside a photo of the slimy giant.
Conger eels are the largest eels in the world, but fishermen rarely catch...
Video: An Introduction to SIG Silencers
Gunmaker SIG SAUER is in the process of rolling out some new divisions of their company, including SIG Silencers and SIG Electro-Optics. The former is headed by none other than Kevin Brittingham, the founder of AAC (now part of Freedom Group).
SIG's begun to release some incredibly well-shot videos detailing everything that's going into their new suppressor department, the first of which is embedded below. I had the chance to shoot some of their new suppressors at SHOT Show this year,...
Strong Turkey Numbers Propel Michigan into Number 7 Spot for Turkey Hunting
Every year, about 100,000 Michigan hunters venture into the field in the hopes of bagging a gobbler, and about 30,000 of them are successful. And this year, for the first time on record, state wildlife officials say that there is a turkey population in every single county in the Lower Peninsula.
"For the first time in history, wild turkeys can be found in parts of every county in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula plus areas of the Upper Peninsula. The expansion of wild turkeys in Michigan did not happen overnight, but has unfolded over the last half-century," the state Department of Natural...
Video: Woodpecker Goes Overboard on Tree
How much wood would a woodpecker peck if a woodpecker could peck wood?
Well since we already know that woodpeckers can peck wood, the answer in this case is probably a lot. Generally, the relationship between trees and this hardworking bird is a symbiotic one. Woodpeckers use their chisel-like bill to excavate insects that burrow into trees, such as the emerald ash borer, thus keeping the tree healthy and earning themselves a meal in the process.
In this case, however, the tree may be getting a raw deal. Some species of the bird, such as the crow-sized pileated woodpecker, carve nests...
