The effective difference downrange of giant handgun bullets (VIDEO)

Fri, 01/29/2016 - 18:25

Matt and the Demolition Ranch guys seek to find out what does more damage downrange, a faster/lighter bullet, or a heavier/slower one.

And to do this, he breaks out a leviathan 700-grain bullet for the .500S&W Magnum which clocks at about 1,200 feet per second to contrast against the 350-grain pipsqueak which books at over 1,900.

The 700-grain looks like it could bend time.

Hidden camera goes looking for the elusive ‘gun show loophole’ (VIDEO)

Thu, 01/28/2016 - 11:43

Conservative commentator and comedian Steven Crowder decided he would go undercover to find out if all the fear-mongering around the so-called “gun show loophole” is legit.

“Real quick, I’m in a hurry, can I get a gun here without a background check?” Crowder asks one seller.

“I know technically you can’t sell it, BUT, are any of these fully automatic?” he queries another.

The reactions are likely not what was expected by Democratic lawmakers.

Conan goes to the Gulf to visit the troops (VIDEO)

Mon, 01/25/2016 - 18:39

“This suit is called the Chris Christie,” he says trying on an EOD bomb suit right after attempting (and failing miserably) to run from a military working dog.

As part of #MissionConan, the late night host jetted off to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with the FLOTUS in tow but was able to step away from the First Lady long enough to get some quality time in with the airmen.

While the ginger Canadian opted to stay on base, he does kick out a fair bit of push-ups on command.

In the end though, we feel the worst for the K9. Poor dog probably thought he was attacking Beaker from the Muppets.

As the beard gets longer, the nutty Bavarian’s inventions get crazier

Mon, 01/25/2016 - 17:33

Joerg Sprave, aka the crazy German slingshot guy, has left sling shots in the dust and concocted a Coke bottle gatling gun that no one should try at home.

Using old plastic pop bottles with pressure caps, a thin length of aluminum tubing and a half-inch valve, he pumps them to 120psi through the use of his bike pump then fits an arrow shaft (crossbow bolt?) over the tube.

And if one launcher is good, a six pack is better, amirite? Ho Ho Ho.

Of course, Joerg is in Deutschland and his new and increasingly long beard gives him mystical powers so avoid replicating his stuff at home under your own risk.

Kirsten Joy Weiss on Kirsten Joy Weiss (VIDEO)

Mon, 01/25/2016 - 17:12

One of the most talented trick shooters in the biz sits down with the NRA’s All Access channel and gives some insight on how and why she does what she does. And yes, there are trick shots.

Although she didn’t start competitive shooting until she was 16– and then almost by accident– she has gone on to world championships and events, the Olympic short list, et al. In other words, she’s pretty darn good at what she does.

Sun, 01/17/2016 - 23:10

On the eve of Shot Show 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada, I was invited to a private live fire range event at The Strip Gun Club. Marcus Luttrell blasted some steel targets by Gnat Warfare and I got to meet retired Navy SEAL Ron Bellan and Jeff Axelson. The event was put on by Team Never Quit, Axelson Tactical, Reaper Outdoors, Seal-1, Ledwave, and Gnat Warfare.

It was a good way to kick off the week. Stay tuned to Guns.com for full coverage.

Lafayette man gets 10 years for shooting at postman

Thu, 01/14/2016 - 19:42

A Lafayette man who opened fire on a postal worker delivering mail was sentenced to 10 years in a federal prison, according to Tuesday’s announcement from the Justice Department.

David Sonnier, 41, pleaded guilty in September to one count of discharging a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.

On top of the 10 years, he was also sentenced to two years of supervised release and ordered to pay for damages to the postal truck.

According to the plea agreement, the victim was delivering mail on his route in Lafayette in March 2014. He had the driver’s side window rolled down so he could stuff mail into mailboxes.

As the mailman stopped at Sonnier’s house, Sonnier opened fire with his Hi Point 9mm pistol. The round struck the driver’s door of postal truck, broke the window and pierced the victim’s pants.

While the victim was not injured, the gunshot caused $1,178 worth of damage to the vehicle.

Building a black powder cannon from 50 feet of paper (VIDEO)

Thu, 01/14/2016 - 15:20

YouTube science channel NightHawkInLight decided to craft a .75 caliber-ish black powder cannon from a roll of paper, some epoxy, random lumber and some casters.

For a total investment of less than a cheap lunch, he comes up with an interesting but ultimately disposable design capable of hurling a ball bearing.

However, the cannon sled is reusable which means as long as you have a few rolls of craft paper and keep with a small enough charge, you could be in business.

Of course, don’t try this at home, etc.

$500K worth of pot found in fake carrots (VIDEO)

Thu, 01/14/2016 - 10:56

Border Patrol agents out of Pharr, Texas, discovered 2,493 pounds of pot stuffed into fake carrots Sunday during a secondary examination of a truck attempting to cross the border.

The fake carrots were mixed in a commercial shipment of real carrots that were coming out of Mexico and into the United States. Altogether, there were about 3,000 fake carrots in the mix and the marijuana inside them had an estimated street value of about $499,000.

“Once again, drug smuggling organizations have demonstrated their creativity in attempting to smuggle large quantities of narcotics across the U.S.-Mexico border,” said Port Director Efrain Solis Jr. in a statement.

Meet the $319 ‘smart gun lock’ set to hit the market (VIDEO)

Wed, 01/13/2016 - 19:08

The Verge takes a look at the Identilock smart gun lock debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

The Identilock is a biometric gun lock that requires a fingerprint match with the user to open the lock and drop free of the firearm. Charged via USB, the battery lasts up to six months.

With increasing gun lock laws in places like San Francisco and calls from the President to expand research into so-called “smart gun” technology, the Identilock surprisingly was the only biometric gun lock at CES this year.

However, not everyone is sold on the idea.

One of the commenters on the original Verge post received 150~ likes after he summed up his feelings by posting, “For this price I could buy another gun to watch my gun.”

Getting a F-1 skeletonized AR a little on the dirty side (VIDEO)

Wed, 01/13/2016 - 18:16

Demolition Ranch got a hold of a F-1 Firearms AR-15 competition rifle in a snazzy high-viz color then proceeded to give it a ranch-style workout to include the clay pond treatment.

Now this F-1 isn’t just your average chop down, but has a fully stripped-away upper and magwell which trim the weight down a bit and, well, open it up to breathe.

But does all that breathing allow for mud, dust and grime to gum up the works? Watch the vid.

Take a quiet look inside the ATF’s gun vault

Wed, 01/13/2016 - 17:53

The National Firearm Reference Vault at the headquarters of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is what Scrooge McDuck would have if he was into guns.

The above video, uploaded by the Department of Defense, is soundless B-roll footage meant for later use as needed in reports, but you really don’t need the sound anyway. Maybe play Disturbed’s Sound of Silence cover in the background as you watch it and cry one perfect tear in the knowledge that these beautiful firearms will likely never see the light of day again.

Lewis guns, Vickers heavies with bronze water sleeves, several different Mini-Guns, racks of AKs, M1s, M2s, M3s, Tommy guns…

Sniff.

Instructor Zero starts taking heads with his G43 over a cup of joe (VIDEO)

Mon, 01/11/2016 - 17:36

Italian paratrooper and international bearded man of mystery, Instructor Zero, decides to stunt a little to win a free cup of coffee by slicing the head off a target, sideways.

The weapon of choice is not a broadsword or Hattori Hanzo katana, but rather the single-stack Glock 43 subcompact 9mm introduced at the NRA Show back in April.

So you know he hasn’t been doing this with that gun for years.

We get the feeling Zero doesn’t pay for much caffè, despite the combat mullett.

AR platforms won’t work in the mud, right? (VIDEO)

Ian and Karl from the In-Range TV crew take an AR and get good and muddy with it to see just where the failure point is.

And yes, as it’s a mud test and not for accuracy, they don’t run it with sights.

You will be surprised how far they get once the mud starts chunking.

And Karl’s repro WWII German tan and water camouflage smock is a nice touch.

Woman shot while pushing baby stroller in Oakland (VIDEO)

Thu, 01/07/2016 - 16:05

A woman is in stable condition after being caught in the crossfire of a violent confrontation on a busy street in Oakland Tuesday.

The woman, who was pushing a baby a stroller at the time, was struck in the arm and rushed to a local hospital. Police say the shooting, which was captured on video surveillance, was the result of an argument between two people and the suspect is still at large.

The baby was not injured.

‘I will not give up on you’ says range instructor to struggling NCO (VIDEO)

Thu, 01/07/2016 - 10:39

We aren’t sure if this is epic-level trolling or for real, but either way you have to give a shout out to the range safety that refuses to let this ate-up NCO quit on the range.

“I’m here for you, Sergeant. Do not give up. I will not let you down. I will not give up on you, even when you’ve given up on yourself, Sergeant,” the safety tells the ACU-clad non-com down in the dirt and down in the dumps on her shooting ability.

Although wearing a pukin dragon combat patch from the 18th Airborne Corps, the reservist with muddy hands is stressed over people yelling at him and is having problems loading 5.56 in her mag backwards while still on the stripper clip.

“Rounds go in one way and one way only, Sergeant, reserve or not,” instructs the safety to his soup-sandwich charge.

Will black powder burn in a cup of liquid nitrogen? (VIDEO)

Wed, 01/06/2016 - 17:50

Go ahead and place your bets on if a cartridge case filled with black powder and set off with a cannon fuse will ignite and explode in liquid nitrogen.

Cody’s Lab gives it a shot by first testing the cannon fuse itself while submerged in “LN” which looks like the nastiest milkshake you are never gonna taste, then moves on to testing his homemade mini-IEDs and finally (spoiler) proceeds to destroy a mini-cannon.

We have to admit, LN looks pretty cool to fool around with under controlled conditions– if you know what you are doing. With that being said of course, don’t try any of this crap at home.

Nutty slingshot guy grows beard, weaponizes skateboard (VIDEO)

Wed, 01/06/2016 - 16:20

Bavarian kinetic energy master Joerg Sprave takes a fine German skateboard and, after some appropriate tweaking, crafts a slingshot that has to be watched to appreciated.

He even kept the LED feature of the wheels which means it lights up all groovy-like when fired. Speaking of firing, he grabs some 16mm steel balls and zaps through particle board and coconuts. Because you can’t have a good German chocolate cake without first chopping up some coconuts.

Kirsten Joy Weiss reviews her very snaky Volquartsen 10/22 rifle (VIDEO)

Tue, 01/05/2016 - 19:20

Professional shooter Kirsten Joy Weiss breaks down her Volquartsen Deluxe 10/22 rifle with its very groovy snake fluted barrel.

Her Ruger is not your average 10/22 plinker from its high comb silhouette stock to the Carl Zeiss AG optics package, compensated bull barrel and its TG2000 trigger. Of course, KJW could probably pick off a running rabbit with a $3 pistol if she wanted to, but hey, if you are lucky enough to lay hands on a Volquartsen…
