Video: Hunter Bags Bizarre 22-point Doe
This hunter's prize buck turned out to be a doe.
Curtis Russel first saw this 22-point deer on his trail cam, and when he encountered it in the field last month in Christian County, Missouri, he naturally assumed it was a dominant buck. The deer with the massive rack was seemingly courting a group of does and even kept other bucks away.
"I did a 50-yard belly crawl to cut the distance and got to within 175 yards," Russell told the Springfield...
The Top 5 Deer and Deer Hunting Stories of 2015
The year is about to come to a close. As we prepare to welcome 2016, here is a list of the top five deer stories covered on OutdoorHub over the past 12 months. There may not have been any unicorn deer or marijuana-eating bucks, but it was still an eventful year for our favorite animal nonetheless.

MA Hunter Reportedly Takes 650-pound Black Bear, Possible Record
News is trickling out that Massachusetts may soon have a new record black bear. Jim Mundell of Athol bagged an estimated 650-pound black bear near his home last Thursday, shocking hunters across the state. According to The Recorder, the bear still weighed an astounding 498 pounds after being dressed. The bear was checked in at the Sunderland Hatchery on Friday morning.
"Dont know how many lbs of meat yet, but I'll tell you this, there was a THICK layer of fat, my birds will love...
Video: Angler Impaled by Dead 500-pound Marlin
An angler in Honolulu, Hawaii was injured recently when a 500-pound marlin's bill skewered his leg and pinned him on one side of the boat, even though it was already dead. According to KHON2, Russell Ching was fishing with friends off Kaneohe and landed a nice-sized marlin after an hour-and-half fight. The real battle, however, didn't start until after it was being dragged on board. Ching said that the fish had died during the fight, but while they were pulling it onto the boat, the...
Colt Expects to Emerge from Bankruptcy by Year’s End
Renowned gun maker Colt may have fallen on hard times in 2015, but the company announced this week that it expects to emerge from Chapter 11 Bankruptcy by the end of the year.
In a press release on Wednesday, Colt announced that the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware approved the company's plan of reorganization, which includes massive changes for the company that will "improve its capital structure and enhance its liquidity profile" along with reducing its debt. Colt originally...
What Really Happens When You Plug a Shotgun with a Carrot
When Bugs Bunny sticks a carrot in the muzzle of Elmer Fudd's barrel, the gun always blows up in Fudd's face. Would that happen in real life?
Barrel obstructions are know to cause catastrophic failures. However those failures are usually the result of squibs stuck in the barrel. YouTuber Demolition Ranch decided to test out the classic Looney Toons scenario himself and record the results.
After stuffing a...
A Treestand Falls, But Memories Remain
Roughly 26 years after I nailed a bunch of treated lumber into an aging red oak on my aunt and uncle’s farm in southwestern Wisconsin, it all came crashing down when a late-summer storm swept the valley.
But I realized two years ago the deer stand’s time had come. After sitting in the old box stand for four hours on opening weekend of the 2013 gun season, I carefully descended, vowing to never again climb into it. As I sat there that cold morning, I noticed the big spikes anchoring its platform to the oak had pulled through the boards and disappeared into the growing branches, leaving...
Video: Testing Homemade, Armor-piercing .50 Cal Shotgun Slugs
This homemade, carbide core .50 caliber shotgun slug looks pretty mean, but how does it perform?
As it turns out, not particularly well. However, TAOFLEDERMAUS gives a pretty good analysis of what went wrong during testing. This design features a carbide slug inside of a plastic carrier. The carrier then rests inside of a sabot to ensure a proper gas seal in a 12 gauge barrel ( 0.72 caliber).
The forces from rapidly accelerating the slug caused the heavier carbide core to be pulled through the back. That caused...
House Democrats Introduce New “Assault Weapons” Ban
On Wednesday, House Democrats made their latest push to restrict the sale, transfer, and production of certain firearms with the introduction of the "Assault Weapons" Ban of 2015.
The bill seeks to renew the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which was authored by staunch pro-gun control Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and signed by then president Bill Clinton. Feinstein and her supporters have made several attempts to renew the ban in recent years, especially after the 2012 Newtown shooting, but have been unable to do so due to public opposition to more gun control laws. The Assault Weapons...
Video: This is What You Call a “Canadian Car Wash”
If you live near moose, then you already know they can be ornery creatures. They're big, intimidating, and always ready to pick a fight. But in winter, you may occasionally see the large animals lumber into town with a strange purpose in mind.
Moose apparently really like licking cars. This isn't out of some altruistic sensibility or anything, it's just because moose like salt. The rock salt accumulated on the wheels and sides of vehicles during winter is an excellent source of salt for these animals---though we're not sure if the chemicals inside are actually good for them. This is why...
The Top 7 Outdoor Mysteries of 2015
The great outdoors can be a mysterious place, and often we'll come across something that'll leave us scratching our heads. In this list we'll go back over the top seven most bizarre outdoor mysteries of 2015. Some have already been solved, thanks to good old science and common sense. The jury is still out on the others.
Still, none of these hold a candle to some of the photos our trail cams get. Those are genuinely creepy.
Remember, when in doubt, don't touch the potentially dangerous creature that looks like it's straight out of a horror movie. And definitely don't poke it...
Video: Shooting a Custom, Full-auto AKM Made by Definitive Arms
Yesterday the Military Arms Channel (MAC) published a video on Definitive Arms' "distressed," select-fire AKM that's just too cool to not share.
As Tim from MAC and Chase from Definitive explain in the video, the rifle was built using a Polish AKM kit to roughly the same specs as the company's DAKM production rifles but features a custom finish.
I shot this gun at the fall Big 3 East event and it was one of the most impressive custom firearms I've ever had my hands on. Check out the entire informative video below....

Video: White Buck Frustrated by Christmas Decorations
By any standards, this is a beautiful buck. It is very rare to see an albino or piebald deer in the wild. We don't know where or when this video was shot, but judging from the fence in the footage, there is a chance that this buck came from a captive population, or from the famous Seneca white deer herd in New York.
The Seneca County deer constitute the largest population of white deer anywhere in the world. With a herd about 200 strong, the Seneca deer are not true albinos. Their white coloring comes from a set of recessive genes brought on by generations of isolation. Currently, the deer...
Video: Eagle Holds on for Dear Life after Pulling Goat off Mountain
Wherever there are eagles, they are almost always the unparalleled masters of the sky. These ferocious predators are capable from taking down anything from small deer, to wolves, to even the sturdy-footed mountain goat. However, just because they can doesn't mean they always will. Even eagles can bite off more than they can chew.
In this video, one of the birds try to drag down a large mountain goat, but its hunt takes a painful turn after the animal tumbles off the mountainside. Unable to release its talons, the eagle had no choice but to follow the goat as it slides down...
Angler Who Survived 438 Days at Sea Accused of Cannibalism
Early last year, 47-year-old José Salvador Alvarenga shocked the world when he washed ashore in the Marshall Islands. The Mexican fisherman is believed to have drifted 6,700 miles in a fiberglass boat after being blown off course by a storm in late 2012.
Alvarenga claimed that he spent 438 days lost at sea. If true, it would mean that Alvarenga survived the longest time ever spent lost at sea in all of recorded history---and he didn't do it alone. The fisherman said he was accompanied by...
Officials Confirm New Kentucky State Record Elk
It is official. A massive bull elk taken in Knott County, Kentucky during the October rifle season opener is now the largest in the state's history. According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, David Giles bagged an elk that had an astounding green score of 408 and 3/8 inches gross. After a 60-day drying period, the elk's final score on the Boone & Crockett Club scale was 377 5/8.
Giles, a 64-year-old banker from Lexington, said it was his first elk in 15 years of entering the state's annual elk lottery. Every year the state receives tens of thousands of...
Slow-motion Video: Testing the Army’s New M855A1 Ammo
The new Army's new M855A1 5.56x45mm round certainly looks like an improvement over the old M855.
The new round is distinguished from the previous round by its copper-jacketed steel core. Based on the video below, it looks like old M855 round and its lead core won't be missed too much. The new M855A1 also boasts increased armor penetration over its predecessor and it allows the Army to be more environmentally friendly on its ranges and training environments.

Video: Angler Almost Gets Shot in His Own Backyard
Nothing scares away the fish faster than a speeding bullet, but that's not exactly a hazard you'd expect while fishing from a pond in your own backyard. This angler was as surprised as anyone else when his fishing session was interrupted by a stray gunshot much too close for comfort.
According to the fisherman behind 618 Fishing, a small fishing channel on YouTube, he was filming recently on his property while one of his neighbors was doing some target practice nearby. They had been shooting for hours without incident so he thought it was safe enough to go outside and do a bit of...
