Up-and-coming YouTuber Brandon Herrera may be best known for his online moniker, TheAKGuy, but he is also an independent gun maker with lofty ambitions. Herrera recently announced that he will begin production of an AK-style rifle chambered in .50 BMG. Milled using CNC technology, the "AK-50" will be constructed out of mainly 4140 steel and aluminum components, while still accepting most standard AK furniture and Barrett M82 magazines. Herrera said that absolutely no cast parts will be used for the rifle.

Teen Spearfisherman Charged by Great White Shark in California
Kainoa Risko had never expected to come face-to-face with a 10-foot great white shark, and when he did last month off the shore of San Clemente, California, he was in a terrible predicament. The 17-year-old's only weapon was a speargun, and he only had one shot.
“I just went into survival mode and just kept poking at it with my speargun,” he told The Orange County Register. “I figured I would just keep poking it, but once I shoot, I’m going to lose my gun and I’ll have no...
Study: Humanely Killed Fish Taste Better, Last Longer
Any angler will tell you that freshly-caught fish taste better than ones you find in the store, and many more would add that fish destined for your dinner plate should be killed quickly. That's not only because it is the ethical thing to do, but because it also helps preserve the flavor. As it turns out, this bit of fishing wisdom has its basis in fact, and scientists in Italy and Spain recently confirmed that killing fish quickly and humanely will lead to better-tasting and longer-lasting fillets.
In a study published in the journal ...
Video: Man Reaches into Hole, Pulls Out Giant Ball of Spiders
If creepy crawlies upset you, then consider this your warning.
This video shows a man pulling a huge ball of "daddy longlegs" out of a hole in a rock face. If it makes you feel any better, that ball of a bugs is made up of Opiliones, which are not true spiders. Members of the Opiliones family include the daddy longlegs or the harvestmen shown in this video.
Thankfully these Opiliones are not venomus and they do not pose a threat to humans. However, that does not make a giant ball of them any less strange-looking.

Video: Kirsten Joy Weiss Blows Up Car from Helicopter
By now most of you are probably familiar with helicopter hog hunting. Kirsten Joy Weiss decided to take that same concept and apply it to a "harder" target.
Before jumping straight into the car-exploding action Kirsten decided to test her skills by hitting a moving RC car. She was able to make quick work of the car, but adding a helicopter into the mix adds a whole different level of difficulty. Not only is the target moving, but the shooter is also moving around the...
7.62x39mm Sig Sauer 556R Rifle
So a Swiss watch maker, a New Hampshirite granite boy, and a Russian small arms designer walk into a bar...
Okay, maybe that didn't happen, but it could have given the eclectic roots of the 7.62x39mm Sig Sauer 556R semiautomatic rifle. While the name “556R” implies AR-type family history, this rifle diverges from the standard direct-impingement Stoner rifle.
A quick tour
First and foremost, the 556R is a piston-operated rifle, so there are no requirements for a stock buffer tube. That means there are no limitations to the type of stock that can be affixed to this handy little...

According to The Dallas Morning News, at first the pair mistook the deer for an Angus calf. Upon closer inspection, the Batemans realized they were looking at a deer so rare that...

5 Fishing Crowdfunding Projects That Made Waves in 2015
There has never been a better time for backyard inventors than right now. Much of that is due to the easy accessibility of crowdfunding. No longer do inventors have to chase down investors or sell their ideas to large corporations for pennies on the dollar. Now, innovators can pitch their ideas directly to the people who will buy their products, raise funding from the ground up, and shape their products how they see fit.
Sounds like a great idea, right? Unfortunately, crowdfunding isn't exactly perfect and unscrupulous people have been known to take advantage of the system. Regardless of...

Video: How to Jump-start a Car with an AK-47
The AK platform has proved remarkably versatile since it was introduced in the 1940s. In fact, it's so versatile that you can use it to jump-start a car.
The video below shows some creative military personnel using their AKs in the absence of jumper cables. They simply connected the metal parts, including what appears to be the cleaning rod, of their rifles to the battery terminals on each vehicle. Unsurprisingly, the quick fix worked and the dead vehicle was able to run after being jumped.
Why this is not ideal it could certainly work in a pinch. Just make sure the rifle is unloaded...

FAA: Recreational Drone Operators Must Register with Federal Agency
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced this week that starting on December 21 all hobby and recreational operators of remote-controlled aircraft, or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), must be registered within 30 days.
The registration of remote-controlled aircraft, commonly known as drones, has been a hot-button issue with both owners and opponents of the vehicles. Critics of the growing popularity of drones say that the small aerial vehicles, when equipped with cameras, violate personal privacy and present a public hazard. Some officials say that drones also interfere with air...

Experimental CWD Vaccine Failing Initial Tests
Hopes for a vaccine to prevent chronic wasting disease (CWD) suffered a severe blow when Wyoming researchers announced in early November that elk inoculated with an experimental serum were at least three times more likely to contract CWD than unvaccinated elk.
The researchers are testing a vaccine developed by the Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise Inc., or PREVENT, at the University of Saskatchewan. The study began about three years ago with 38 elk at the Tom Thorne and Beth Williams Wildlife Research Center north of Laramie, Wyoming.
After being placed in a CWD-contaminated outdoor...
Video: Bizarre Object Found in Utah Lake Ice
Can you identify what this strange object is?
A video of this bizarre, organic-looking spotted circle is currently trending on Facebook. It reportedly occurred somewhere in Utah, but a more concrete location and date has not been specified. Theories, however, are plentiful. More outlandish ones say it was caused by Arctic jellyfish, ice fungi, and even Bryozoan blobs. Others believe the circle owes its origin to weather conditions, the movement of underwater currents, or just a prank by some bored---but creative---ice fishermen. Perhaps the most popular is that the circle was actually...

Still Have a Tag? Try a “Hail Mary” Hunt
You prepared for months, maybe even years, for your hunt. You spent a week or more working hard and analyzing sign, wind currents, deer movements, and any other clues you could. You hunted hard during the peak time of the year, but still came home with an unpunched tag in your pocket.
All is not lost. There may still be time for one last pass into the end zone, a “Hail Mary.” Have some time off over Christmas vacation? Can you get away for a long weekend the last few days of the season? Why not go back and give it one last try?
You may consider me crazy, but I love the very end of...
