Wed, 07/01/2015 - 09:58

Think punt guns were overpowered for bird hunting? Check out this cannon that nearly turned a seagull into a bloody mist after it passed by during a ceremonial firing. Every day---except for Sunday---at precisely 1 p.m., the guard at Scotland's Edinburgh Castle fires a 105mm L118 light gun to mark the time. The tradition stretches back to 1861 when the cannon was originally used to signal the time to ships in nearby harbors, but have since become a purely ceremonial event. Of course, the original cannon was a 18-pound muzzle-loading version that took four men to load. That cannon was...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: When Hell Really Did Freeze Over

Tue, 06/30/2015 - 23:21

There are just some hunts you should never go on! The trouble is you never find that out until it’s too late! I experienced one of those about eight years ago, and it was truly “The Bison Hunt from Hell!” Not that any of it was the fault of MVP Outfitters (Dean, Katy, and Dustin Roe). They were just victims like everybody else. In late January of 2007, I had booked the hunt by telephone from the SCI Annual Convention in Reno, after learning that the Roes had taken over the hunting lease on the Blueberry Indian lands near Pink Mountain in northern British Columbia. In late 2000, I had...

Tue, 06/30/2015 - 14:30

It's undeniable that Larry Vickers has some of the best-produced gun videos on YouTube, and this slow-motion shoot only cements that reputation. In this video, Larry and the crew shoot .308 Winchester and .50 Raufoss rounds at two large blocks of ice. Not only do the cameras make the sight a treat for the eyes, but at one point a...

Tue, 06/30/2015 - 11:37

Hunters by nature are collectors. Perhaps it goes back to our hunter-gatherer days. We like to put mementos of hunts on our walls and relive the experiences. We also like to set goals and achieve difficult objectives---there's the grand slam of all four subspecies of turkeys, the grand slam of the four wild sheep, and the super slam of all 29 species of North America big game animals, for example. There are four species of bears in North America: coastal brown bears, grizzlies, black bears, and polar bears. A handful of people have shot all four of these, and some have even done with with...

Tue, 06/30/2015 - 09:49

Could you imagine bringing your car to the mechanic and telling them you have a snake problem? In North America, they'd either laugh you out of the shop or run away as fast as their legs could take them. In Australia, however, snakes under the hood aren't as uncommon as you would think. In the video below, professional snake catcher Richie Gilbert was called to the residence of a Queensland woman after she found what appears to be a seven-foot carpet python underneath her hood. "Yeah that would give you a fright wouldn't it?" Gilbert remarked after popping the hood open. Sure enough the...

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 15:28

There's nothing like beating the summer heat by cooling off with a swim, and this young bear just can't seem to get enough of this pool.

The addition of a surfboard is much appreciated, although the bear may soon be too big to use it for anything more than a floating arm rest.

Not that it minds, of course.

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 12:02

The Canadian Rangers have guarded their homeland's northernmost reaches since before the Second World War. These dedicated volunteers, sometimes known as the Arctic Rangers, once protected North America's most remote regions from possible invasion, and now they serve as the Canadian military's foremost scouts, guides, and wilderness survival experts. Rangers are also expected to be self-reliant, which may explain why the force hadn't started seeking a replacement for its storied and reliable service rifle, the bolt-action Lee-Enfield No. 4, until 2011. Last week the Canadian government...
