Video: Raccoon Learns to Ride a Tiny Bike

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 15:54

Featured in this video is Melanie Raccoon, who according to its owner is the "world's most talented animal." We are not sure if that's really the case, but this animal can ride a tiny bicycle which is pretty impressive. The Melanie Raccoon YouTube channel features a number of interesting (and creepy) videos of Melanie doing everything from sweeping the floor to gambling on a slot machine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwtdIXWGry4...

Shark Falls from Sky into Virginia Home’s Backyard

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 15:10

Eerily reminiscent of the 2013 film Sharknado, a homeowner in Virginia Beach, Virginia said that a shark has dropped from the sky straight onto her backyard. Thankfully for Sue Bowser and her grandchildren, the shark that fell onto a concrete path behind her house was just a baby and measured little more than 13 inches. “This could be the shark house, but hopefully not too many more will be falling from the sky,” Bowser told WAVY. “The kids found it, and they came upstairs and they were...

Video: Flying Great White Shark Photobombs Its Feasting Friend

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 13:38

Capturing a great white shark tearing into bait on film is pretty impressive, but this camera also managed to capture a leaping great white in the same 14-second video. According to the clip's description, this spectacular event happened in Mossel Bay, South Africa on July 6. The attacking great white must have felt pretty disappointed after its photobombing friend stole the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOIp6_oOx4Y...

Photo: Grizzly Defeats Zoo’s “Bear-proof” Glass with a Rock

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 13:02

Visitors to the Minnesota Zoo on Monday got a big shock when a grizzly shattered a pane of supposedly bear-proof glass with a rock. According to witnesses, the bear dug out a rock the size of a basketball and slammed it repeatedly into the glass, cracking a five-layer, two-and-a-half-inch protective window similar to those used at other bear exhibits across the country. While shattered, the exhibit's glass pane did remain in place and zoo officials said that no visitors or animals were hurt in the incident. “At no time was there any danger of the bears getting out since there were...

The 2016 Arctic Cat Prowler HDX 700 XT EPS

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 11:58

The email was short and sweet. It was from Arctic Cat media guy, Kale Wainer, and it simply said, “Hey, we’ve got something coming out soon that you’re really going to be interested in.” Kale knows that I love ATVs and that I do a lot of hunting and land management, so I expected something cool. Kale did not disappoint. The 2016 Arctic Cat Prowler HDX 700 XT EPS is a beast of a machine for hunting and working, and you have to admit, it’s sharp looking, too. The first thing you’d...

Whataburger Reaffirms Chain-wide Ban on Open Carry

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 11:22

On July 2, the popular fast food chain Whataburger announced that it will be maintaining a ban on the open carry of firearms at its locations. The San Antonio-based restaurant chain first announced its policy last year, but the ban was drawn back into discussion after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a long-awaited bill to legalize open carry in the state last month. With...

Video: Whale Shoots Rainbow Out of Its Blowhole

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 09:33

Whales are truly marvelous creatures, but the ability to spew rainbows out of their blowholes seem a bit far-fetched. What's next, giant pots of gold and green pants? Not exactly. Mark Girardeau may have not found any gold, but he did discover that under the right conditions, whales can create their own rainbows by blowing water into the air. The below video of a humpback whale was captured when Girardeau was operating a camera drone off the coast of California's Newport Beach on Sunday. https://youtu.be/DMIAbxGR6Dc?t=35s Apparently, it is not too uncommon for whales to...

Animals That Are Safe to Eat in a Survival Scenario: Bugs and Crustaceans

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 08:25

Wild plants and roots are nice, but sometimes you want to add a little bit of meat to your diet. In this series, I will cover what animals can be harvested as a food source in the wild, and some general methods of capturing and cooking these critters. To preface this, the odds of anyone actually needing to procure meat in a survival scenario are astronomically low. All things considered, finding edible plants is generally a far better use of your energy and, in most survival situations, shelter, fire, and water are way bigger priorities. Plus, nothing you can cook in the wild is ever going...

Video: Classic Footage of Fred Bear Bowfishing for Rays

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 07:47

Fred Bear might be one of the most famous bowhunters of all time, but few people have seen footage of him bowfishing. This rare clip shows Bear testing out some of his bowsfishing equipment in the Florida Keys. Notice how the equipment has changed and become more specialized over the years. Instead of having a reel attached to the bow itself, Fred attaches the line to a traditional reel. Also featured in this video is the famous footage of Fred Bear hunting for pheasant with a bow and arrow. All of this really stands as a testament to one of the fathers of modern...

Survey: North American Duck Numbers Remain High

Wed, 07/08/2015 - 07:40

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently released its report on the 2015 Trends in Duck Breeding Populations, the most accurate and comprehensive view of duck populations in the US and Canada. According to surveys, the estimated total duck population---excluding a few species---is 49.5 million birds. That is slightly above 2014's estimate and more than 43 percent higher than the long term average, and that is enough to make a lot of duck hunters very happy. "We are...

Video: Why You Never Mock a Moose Within Charging Distance

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 14:56

Moose are among the most ornery large mammals in North America, and the last thing you want is to tick one off. In areas where they co-exist, moose are responsible for more human injuries than bears and wolves combined. Don't let their slow, shambling gait fool you---they can run pretty fast. They also don't like sharing roads. That being said, we don't know exactly what this man is trying to accomplish by creeping up on a bull moose with a "horn" in hand. Was he trying to provoke the moose into thinking it was another bull? Was he trying to communicate with the animal? In either...

Concealed Carry Myths: That Caliber Has Too Much Recoil!

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 14:44

“I like my .380 because it hardly kicks.” “I hate my .380 compact because it kicks like an ill-tempered donkey.” “I don’t want a .40 S&W because the recoil is too much for me.” “My .40 S&W is the softest shooting gun; I love it!” “9mm is the way to go because the recoil is manageable.” “I just bought a new 9mm and I hate how it recoils…” The funny thing about all these statements is that they’re all true. Judging the recoil of a caliber is 50 percent science, 50 percent opinion, and 112 percent voodoo. That’s because some of the...

Video: The Dog That Fetches Sharks

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 13:45

We know that shark fishing can be pretty dicey, especially when pulling them into the boat. The fearless dog in this video was apparently not aware of that fact. After his owner reeled a small shark in the dog leaped off the side of the boat to grab the shark. After a quick tussle the dog got a firm grip on the shark and the struggle was over. That's where we excepted this video to end, but the pup swam all the way back to the shore and dropped the shark on the beach. https://youtu.be/2jkExrrm_sQ...

NH Governor Vetoes Constitutional Carry Bill

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 13:01

On Monday, New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan made good on a promise to gun control advocates when she vetoed Senate Bill 116, which would repeal the requirement for a concealed firearms permit in the state. Back in April, Hassan said she would not sign the legislation if it came to her desk after receiving postcards from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which opposed the bill. "I support the Second Amendment and I believe that Americans have a right to responsibly own guns for personal safety, hunting, and recreation. However, I also recognize the need to balance the...

Man Takes Two Years to Realize Adopted “Dogs” Were Actually Black Bears

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 11:16

You would think that the distinct lack of barking would give it away, but a man in China only realized after two years that the "dogs" he adopted were actually Asian black bears. According to UPI, Wang Kayui was traveling through Vietnam in 2013 when he purchased two small bear cubs, which he then brought back to his home in Yunnan Province. Wang described the "dogs" as well-behaved with large and curious appetites, but never thought they might be bears...

Video: The Moment When a Buck Breaks Through the Ice

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 10:10

The rut can make deer do stupid things, and when only a small frozen stream separates this buck from a group of does, he decided to take the plunge. Deer are generally well equipped for a fall through the ice---but only up to a certain extent. Icy waters are still a source of mortality for deer, but more often than not the animals are smart enough to make short crossings and to stick to where the ice is the thickest. Deer are also strong swimmers and plenty tough. Despite all that, however, sometimes an impatient buck can make fatal mistakes. Just two miles away another buck had the...

9 Unsettling Videos That Prove Deer Can Be Carnivores

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 09:22

Deer are often considered dedicated herbivores, but that doesn't mean they can't enjoy a cut of steak from time to time. Contrary to popular belief, deer will occasionally eat meat if the opportunity presents itself---which usually means finding a dead bird or squirrel while browsing. It is especially tempting during harsh winters, when food is in short supply and a frozen critter is nothing more than a nutritious snack. The animals will even raid gut piles and human food if the need is high enough. Deer eating live prey, on the other hand, can be much more disturbing to watch. Most of...

Video: Stalking Hunter Gets Close Enough to Touch Buck

Mon, 07/06/2015 - 16:44

Ever get bored in the off-season? Ever worry that your skills are atrophying? End of the Road Outdoors staff member Jeff Osburn may have felt exactly that way when he decided to try an unarmed stalk to keep his skills sharp. That stalk led to this incredible footage, in which Osburn actually got close enough to touch a decently-sized buck. We are not sure if the buck was sleeping or indifferent, but it made for some good footage regardless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A4eX1YYg0Y...
