Native American Tribe May Make Bid on Colt
Last month Colt, the iconic 160-year-old gun maker, filed for bankruptcy and began considering plans to put itself up for sale. While the company's future is still uncertain, an unexpected party has appeared with an offer to help: the Morongo Band of Mission Indians in California.
Tribal attorney Drew Ryce told the press last week that the tribe is looking to assist Colt during its difficult time and that if the company should decide on a turnaround plan, the Morongo will help sponsor...
Video: The Only Place on Earth Where Guns Are Mandatory
There are plenty of places on Earth that encourage the ownership of firearms, but there is only one place that legally requires you to have one before you can enter.
Welcome to Svalbard, Norway. Located in a remote region high above the Arctic Circle, it's home to one of nature's fiercest creatures---polar bears. The reason firearm possession is required by law is the large native bear population.
After a series of deadly attacks firearm possession was mandated, and tourists who are not familiar with firearms must have an armed guard...
Henry .30-30 H009 Rifle
The most common American hunting lever-gun cartridge is irrefutably the ubiquitous .30-30. Due to its prevalence among farmers and those with no interest in firearms outside hunting, it has been unfairly typecast as a “fudd caliber” for years. This same stigma has led many modern shooters away from learning about it. This is unfortunate, since it’s one of the easiest-shooting medium game-hunting cartridges with a respectable variety of ammo loads available for animals ranging from whitetail to black bear.
Thankfully, American arms-maker Henry Rifles appreciates the round’s...
US Army Develops Exoskeleton to Improve Handgun Accuracy
Forget gun attachments, the US Army is now considering add-ons for the human body.
Taking inspiration straight from science fiction, researchers at the US Army Research Laboratory in Maryland are developing new ways to improve handgun accuracy for soldiers. One method is the mechatronic arm exoskeleton (MAXFAS), a futuristic carbon-fiber arm brace that trains users to shoot more accurately and to reduce hand shake when presenting a handgun.
According to Dan Baechle, the mechanical engineer behind the project, he first got the idea from the iconic power loader in the film...
Photos: Suicidal Crow Hitches Ride on Bald Eagle
Crows are not especially known for their courage or fighting prowess, but this bird nonetheless managed to do something that was either very brave or very foolish: ride a bald eagle. According to Phoo Chan, the amatuer photographer who took these photos over Seabeck, Washington late last month, the eagle was only looking for a meal when the crow began to harass it.
"I have seen crows harassing a hawk by swooping back and forth in order to drive it away from their territory. I was completely awed to see the crow actually land on the back of the flying eagle," Chan told the ...
Nine-year-old Angler Lands Massive 10-foot Sturgeon
Nine-year-old Kegan Rothman may not have seen Jurassic World yet, but he already knows what a dinosaur looks like. On June 29, the young angler hooked a monster, 600-pound white sturgeon in British Columbia's Fraser River. With the help of his father Dan Rothman and charter fishing guide Ben Trainer from Great River Fishing Adventures, it took Kegan Rothman more than an hour and 45 minutes to land the prehistoric fish.
“It is the most excitement I’ve ever had with a fish! It was so hard to hold onto the rod. I thought the fish was...
Video: Bobcat Escapes Mountain Lion by Jumping atop 40-foot Cactus
It's a cat-eat-cat world out there, and mountain lions are not above snacking on their smaller cousins if they get the chance. One such pursuit ended with a bobcat scrambling up a 40-foot saguaro cactus in Arizona's Sonoran Desert.
"The lion didn't pursue the bobcat up the cactus but circled the base," photographer Curt Fonger, who took photos of the scene back in 2011, told the Daily Mail. "It looked up at the bobcat, growled several times, then turned around...
Put a Houseboat Fishing Trip on Your Bucket List
The rocky shorelines of Canadian Shield lakes evoke great emotions for many anglers. There is something special about fishing undeveloped wilderness areas where you can literally step out of the boat onto an eons-old boulder and be the first human to ever set foot there.
Voyageurs National Park on the Minnesota-Ontario border is a such place. The park honors the route taken by the French-Canadian traders as they brought goods to trade with the natives in exchange for beavers and other pelts trapped by the Ojibways. From the early 1700s to the mid 1800s, this water highway saw large canoes...
Virginia Bans Deer Urine Attractants Due to CWD Fears
Effective July 1, it is now illegal to possess or use deer lures that contain natural deer urine or other bodily fluids while in pursuit of game in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) instituted the rule change this month as part of its increased vigilance against chronic wasting disease (CWD), which can be spread by infectious proteins in deer urine, feces, or saliva.
"The VDGIF is taking a pro-active approach on this issue and has banned possession and use until it is proven that prions are not spread in commercial deer urine products, rather than...

Video: Hunter Decapitates Pigeon with an Arrow at 60 Yards
Tim Wells is an absolute sharpshooter with a bow and arrow, but even for him, this shot is extraordinary. At 60 yards out, Wells lands a clean neck shot on a pigeon in flight and severs its head.
"Its not the farthest I've slocked a flying pigeon but pretty close," he wrote on Facebook.
The results may have been somewhat grisly, but as ethical kills go, it doesn't get much cleaner than that. The pigeon hardly knew what hit it.

Woman Stranded in California Forest Gives Birth, Sets Mountain on Fire
A 35-year-old woman and her newborn child were rescued from Plumas County National Forest last week after a harrowing three days in the wild, during which she gave birth alone and set fire to a mountainside. According to KRCA, a pregnant Amber Pangborn was driving to her mother's house last Wednesday when she decided to take a shortcut through the 1,146,000-acre national forest. Pangborn quickly became lost and soon ran out of gas, forcing her to pull over...
10 of the Most Expensive and Notorious Guns in the World
There are expensive guns, and then there are these. Even the most wealthy of collectors will find it exceedingly difficult to procure one of these firearms, and each is a notable piece of history on its own. Due to their historical significance and desirability, these weapons are coveted by both collectors and museums alike, and finding one up for auction is very rare.
It comes as no surprise that some of the world's most expensive guns are also the most notorious. Many of these firearms were once owned by assassins and thieves, but others have a gentler history.
Which of...
Video: Raccoon Mom Teaches Kit How to Climb
Have you ever wondered how animals like raccoons learn to climb? When it may seem natural, even raccoons take time to master this vital skill, and they do that by imitating their mothers. This video, taken by Jeffrey Reid in Port Townsend, Washington, is one of the clearest examples of a mother raccoon teaching a kit---a young raccoon---how to climb a tree.
"She's saying, 'Watch me, now you do it," Joesph Travis, a biologist at Florida State University, told National...
Video: Baby Skunk Plays with a Roomba in Someone’s Living Room
We're not sure what's going on in this video, but it appears to show a baby skunk playing with a Roomba.
This video leaves us with so many unanswered questions. First off, why is there a skunk running around someone's living room? Unless you lack a sense of smell, letting a skunk run around your house is probably a bad idea.
Secondly, why is the does the skunk seem to be attracted to the Roomba? Maybe it thinks the Roomba is a long-lost relative?

Lake St. Clair Offers Prime Summer Bass Fishing
Ask 10 bass fishermen to rattle off the best bass lakes in Michigan and if nine of them don’t mention Lake St. Clair right off the bat, there’s something wrong with your sample. Lake St. Clair is and always has been one of the best bass lakes---and not only in Michigan, but in the country. In fact, it’s one of the best bass lakes in two countries, as Michigan shares the 430-square mile Great Lakes connecting water with Ontario, Canada.
St. Clair has everything a bass angler could want: vast shallow flats, huge shallow marshes, cuts and canals, and shipping channels. There...
Louisiana Hunters May Now Carry Any Caliber Firearm During Archery Season
On Monday, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal signed SB 212, a bill that removed the restrictions preventing hunters from carrying larger-caliber firearms during archery season.
Previously, bowhunters were allowed to carry certain firearms for protection, but were restricted to certain calibers, such as .22 or smaller. This severely limited the options available to hunters for self-defense, and many called for the restriction to be removed so that larger calibers could be carried as well.
“Louisiana is widely known as the Sportsman’s Paradise and that’s why we’ve continuously...

Single Fish Kills 400,000 Spring Chinook at Oregon Hatchery
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) reported on Monday that a single fish in the wrong place at the wrong time resulted in the deaths of more than 400,000 Chinook pre-smolts at Rock Creek Hatchery.
No, it wasn't a case of some super-predator breaking into the raceways to gobble up all those young salmon. Instead, officials said that the fish somehow wedged itself into an intake pipe and cut off freshwater from coming into the raceway.
"A fish carcass clogged an intake pipe at Rock Creek Hatchery, shutting off the flow of water to a raceway, killing 400,000 spring Chinook...
