Video: Golden Eagle Gets a Massage Before a Hunt

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 14:57

Eagles may have a reputation for being merciless predators of the sky, but even they enjoy a good rub now and then. This golden eagle seems content to sit back and relax for a rubdown just before a hunt. What's astounding is how docile the bird is, which is indicative of its training. Golden eagles have been used in falconry since at least the Middle Ages. Compared to other hunting birds, eagles are fast, strong, and highly aggressive. This lends well to them being used in teams and a good-sized eagle can even take down prey like deer and antelope, or cull other predators like wolves....

Video: Paddleboard Bowfishing is Serious Summer Fun

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 14:43

Paddleboarding is all the rage these days, but why not combine it with another awesome water activity? The paddleboarder in this video decided to take his bowfishing equipment with him on his board. The paddleboard allows bowfishermen to move off of the docks and shore to get as close as possible to the fish. Paddleboards also offer increased mobility over kayaks, which can restrict a bowfisherman's movement. The only downside we can see is that paddleboards take some serious balancing skills, especially if you are used to standing on a dock or...

Concealed Carry Myths: Semi-autos Suck Because Revolvers Don’t Jam

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 14:25

“A revolver never jams!” I hear this one virtually every time I visit a gun store. Given what I do for a living, I simply can’t help picking up the sales conversations at the gun counter. Yeah, I know. That’s nosey and none of my business. Whether it’s my business to overhear or not, the statement still makes me cringe. Listening to the "infallibility of the revolver" argument, you’d think that semiautomatic pistols were some new and untested invention like smart guns. They’re not. Semiautomatic pistols have been in common use for nearly a century, and they’ve been the...

Colorado Man Wakes Up to Black Bear Nibbling His Feet

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 13:23

Of all the ways to wake up, finding your feet in a black bear's mouth is probably one of the least pleasant. A man in Lazy Glen, Colorado woke up from an afternoon nap on his porch when he discovered a bear nibbling on him. According to the Aspen Times, at one point the bear had clasped its jaws entirely around the man's ankle. Seventy-seven-year-old Peter Rizzuto was not alarmed---at least at first. “I started petting it and saying ‘nice doggy,’” Rizzuto said, adding that he initially...

Wisconsin Wolf Population Soars, Hunt Still Uncertain

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 10:47

Wildlife officials in Wisconsin announced earlier this month that the wolf population is booming, coming close to the state's all-time high. Preliminary surveys conducted by the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) place current wolf numbers between 746 to 771 wolves, a roughly 13 percent increase from last year's count of 660. Wisconsin's all-time high since the reintroduction was in 2012 with 815 animals. That unexpectedly large number led to high quotas during the 2013 hunting season, which has since fluctuated until 2015. Wolf hunting was very popular in Wisconsin---not unlike...

Video: Great White Shark Stalks Surfer

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 10:14

This video was recorded off Manly Beach in Sydney Australia. Manly Beach is a common place for shark sightings, but they are rarely as long or dangerous as this encounter. The great white shark in this video had been circling the surfer for several minutes before he got out his GoPro to start recording. Shark behavior like this is not uncommon. Great whites frequently observe their prey before going in for a strike. The amazing calm of this surfer likely prevented this from turning into a much more dangerous situation. The video did leave us with one question: where are the waves he...

Video: Cat Nearly Gives Bear a Heart Attack

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 09:40

Darliss Elliot of Eagle River, Alaska never expected her cat to come to her defense in an encounter with potentially dangerous wildlife, but an abrupt pounce from her two-year-old cat Nani was enough to scare a young bear into full retreat. "She's really such a fraidy-cat most of the time, I don't know what got into her. She probably wouldn't have lunged if we weren't standing right behind her," Elliot told KTUU. The bear was likely sniffing around for food or simply...

Photos: 3 of Theodore Roosevelt’s Personal Firearms

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 17:11

When a Roosevelt family member made an appointment to bring in a handgun for the NRA Museum a few decades ago, the museum director gladly accepted. The new donation arrived with provenance indicating that the little FN M1900 chambered in .32 ACP was the very semiautomatic pistol Theodore Roosevelt kept in his bedstand while President. Many of Teddy Roosevelt’s firearms and outdoor-related artifacts are on display in both the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia and the Read more »

Video: How to Build a Long-term Survival Shelter with No Tools

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 15:29

How good are your shelter-making skills? While it takes little training to set up a tent or turn tarp into a temporary shelter, learning how to make stable, long-term housing is quite a bump up in difficulty. In the below video, a survival expert demonstrates how to build a wattle and daub hunt entirely from scratch--- including chiseling your own tools out of stone. By definition, a wattle and daub hut is not something that can be described as comfortable. The method for building these shelters goes back at least 6,000 years and often involves mud, clay, straw, or dung. Wooden strips or...

Video: The Prepper’s Dream Beer Vault

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 15:19

Do you need to hide your beer from would-be thieves? Do you just want to hide your beer from kids or house guests? This man came up with an ingenious way of hiding beer in his own backyard. The video shows him using a crank to raise up a substantial stash of beer from the ground. While this may not exactly be the most practical solution, it's a pretty cool party trick. Any beer stored in a cooler like this would also benefit from some natural refrigeration. Who's gonna give making one a try? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bIFP3yMRto...

Mitchell 308 Combo

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 13:40

I have always had an affinity for Mitchell reels. It goes back to when I was a youngster just learning how to fish. My grandmother used to let me use an old, red fiberglass fishing pole with an original 1950s-era Mitchell 300 spinning reel. I have lots of good memories associated with that reel and fishing with my grandparents. I bought my first Mitchell reels when I went to Alaska shortly after graduating from high school. My uncle has a house on the Kenai River with a great spot for sockeye salmon right out front. When I asked him what I’d need to bring, he said that he had enough rods...

White House: “Assault Weapons” Not “Family Heritage,” Should Be Banned

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 10:55

On Monday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest reiterated the Obama administration's stance on gun control, specifically regarding so-called "assault weapons" (typically, sporting rifles with specific cosmetic features). In response to a reporter's inquiry, Earnest stated that President Obama is still making an argument for a ban on assault weapons, "increasing" background checks, and other gun control measures. "You don't need an assault weapon to go hunting," the press secretary told reporters. "That certainly is not part of anybody’s family heritage or family tradition. And so...

Video: Man Nearly Knocks His Teeth Out with Shotgun

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 10:16

Judging by his ear and eye protection, this shooter already had safety on his mind. Unfortunately for him, it seems like he left his mouth guard at home. While testing a pistol-gripped Mossberg 500 and running through the gamut of buckshot and slugs available for it, this man smacks himself right in the mouth with the shotgun after firing a 3-inch 00 buckshot. "Do you need any stitches on that do you think?" asked the cameraman, who continues to film after the incident. "If you were wondering what that felt like, it felt like getting punched really hard," said the shooter. He's...
