Texas Governor Signs Open Carry, Campus Carry Bills at Gun Range
On Saturday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed two bills that legalized the carry of firearms on college campuses as well as the open carry of handguns. Fittingly, Abbott held the signing at Red's Indoor Range in Plugerville. According to the popular gun blog The Truth About Guns, Abbott even spent some time at the range after the signing to shoot a SIG P938.
“Today I am proud to expand liberty in the Lone Star State,” said Governor Abbott in a Read more »
Video: Testing Out Homemade .50 BMG Exploding Arrowheads
This is something you really shouldn't try at home.
YouTube's Royal Nonesuch surprised us last month when he tested out his homemade 12 gauge-tipped arrows, but now he's taken things one step further. Using the same setup he had last time---presumably cut metal pipes with a nail insert to set off the primer when struck---this backyard genius decides to try his hand at using .50 BMG rounds.
The terms ".50 BMG,"...
Video: Alaska Man Trains Wolverine for Winter Rescue
Imagine you've been buried in an avalanche. Of all the things that you want digging you out of the snow, a ravenous wolverine probably wouldn't make the list. However, it just happens that wolverines are especially good at finding people---or frozen animal carcasses---buried in the snow.
"That's what wolverines do," said Stevel Kroschel, who runs the Kroschel Wildlife Center in Haines, Alaska.
After working with wolverines for more than 27 years, it seems that Kroschel has even managed to teach the animals some new tricks. While rescuing trapped humans may not come naturally to these...

Study: Polar Bears Turning to Dolphins for New Food Source
Dolphins in the Arctic are staying longer than in previous years, and this may have led to polar bears targeting them as a food source. Scientists at the Norwegian Polar Institute have confirmed in a study that the bears are hunting and killing dolphins for food, a behavior that has only been seen recently.
Experts say that warmer waters may have caused dolphins to stay in the Arctic during winter and spring, even though dolphins usually leave after summer since a sheet of ice restricts their movement during...
Lawmakers Introduce Bill Requiring “Smart Gun” Trigger Tech
Last week Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Massachusetts) and Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-New York) introduced the Handgun Trigger Safety Act, a bill that if passed will require all new handguns to be equipped with so-called "smart gun" technology---or technology that can recognize gun users---within five years. In addition, the bill would also allocate funding for the development and improvement of smart gun technology and mandate within 10 years of its passage that all existing guns be retrofitted before they can be sold.
"The epidemic of gun violence in America is not preordained, it...

A Montana man could be facing prison time after campers tipped off the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to a possible mule deer poaching incident.
The incident took place on May 30, when officials believe that Erik Rautenberg fatally shot a mule deer near his campsite in southeastern Wyoming. According the the Cody Enterprise, witnesses reported seeing "an individual shooting a gun and a deer running up the hill. After they went out of sight, the couple 'heard a volley of...
Video: How to Make a Lure Out of a Penny
You'll need some tools and access to one of those machines that squishes pennies (or a rolling mill) for this, but it's pretty neat to make your own lures for literally pennies on the dollar. It'll take a bit of work though, so this is more for the satisfaction of crafting something yourself instead of just saving a few bucks.
According to makezine.com, here's what you'll need:
A rolling mill (to flatten the penny)
Letter punch with bracket sign from a punctuation letter punch set.
Hammer

How to Get Your Deer Out of the Woods with Ease
Don’t wait until you have a big buck down a long ways from the truck to decide how to move it. Plan now so your job of getting your deer out of the woods is the easiest it can be.
Most public areas do not allow the use of any motorized vehicles, which can present a problem when the time comes to get a deer out of the woods. Just grabbing onto an antler and dragging the deer is a popular option but there are better methods for a long-distance haul.
A harness that allows you to put the weight of the drag on your shoulders, rather than your arms, is one helpful way to do it....
Video: Woodcock Shows Off Its Rock Vocal Skills
The American woodcock is a small upland game bird that can be found across the eastern United States. They are renowned for their ability to camouflage themselves, but this video shows us one of their lesser-known skills.
This clip features music from Collective Soul's "Shine" with some added vocals from a woodcock. While we prefer the orignal version of the song, this woodcock gave us a cover that will keep us laughing all weekend.

Battle Between Hawk and Snake Starts California Wildfire
Firefighters near San Diego spent hours fighting a four-acre fire on a hillside on Tuesday, only to find two bodies near the origin of the blaze. However, the scorched carcasses were not human. They belonged to a brown hawk and a large, unidentified snake, still locked in combat.
According to the Washington Post, the two animals were electrocuted when they touched a power transformer. The electric current set the bird and snake...
Video: Death-defying Russian Rabbit Surfs Avalanche
Avalanches are serious business, but for this rabbit, one was just in the way.
This stunning video was filmed by the Russian tourist company Helipro in Kamchatka, Russia and follows professional snowboarder David Carrier Porcheron after he triggers an avalanche. The focus quickly leaves Porcheron, however, after a rabbit darts out of nowhere and charges straight into the avalanche. What would have normally been a suicidal move quickly turns into amazement for the filmmakers as the rabbit hops along the top of the moving avalanche and actually outruns it.
Maybe it just wanted to show...
Truck Full of Sharks Crashes in Florida
It may sound like the premise for the next Sharknado movie, but an accident on Florida's I-95 resulted in a truck carrying five-foot sharks to careen off the road. According to WESH, the truck was transporting four sandbar sharks from Marathon to an aquarium in Coney Island, New York. At least one of the sharks was thrown clear of the vehicle and killed, while the condition of the other three is stable. The driver and two passengers of the truck were also...

Quiz: Can You Identify These Common Deer Diseases?
"What is that? Should I touch it?"
If you've ever harvested a deer and asked yourself those questions, it is likely you have stumbled across a sick animal. Although these diseases are not transmissible to humans and generally do not spoil the meat, it is important to recognize sick deer when you find them. At the very least, your local wildlife officials would be interested to know where the deer was taken and in some cases, they can prevent the disease from spreading to other deer. So how's your knowledge of deer diseases stack up?
As always, using rubber gloves when...

Anglers Rescue Deer Stranded Half-mile Offshore on Lake Winnebago
When Matt Van Thiel and Josh Krueger ventured out onto Wisconsin's Lake Winnebago last weekend, they expected to land some fish, not a deer.
According to Fox 11, the two angers were shocked when they discovered a doe trying to paddle her way back to land about a half-mile from shore. Deer are actually good swimmers, but only to a certain extent. The two men saw that the doe was struggling to stay afloat in 16 feet of water and decided to give her a helping hand.
“It was a stressful situation, but...
Video: This Crocodile Really Sucks at Hunting
There are few things as fearsome---and gruesome---as a crocodile death roll. When a crocodile gets a hold of large prey, it will drag its unfortunate victim down into the water and attempt to drown it by rolling continuously. Of course, those that don't drown will usually succumb to blood loss as the whirling cyclone of death inevitably tears off a limb or two. Once other crocodiles join in on the feeding frenzy, a carcass can be ripped apart in only a matter of minutes.
Of course, that only happens when a crocodile actually succeeds in holding onto prey. The sluggish reptile in the video...
Video: This is What Blowing Up a Beaver Dam Looks Like
Tom Ainsworth of Manitoba's Grandview Outfitters had a beaver problem.
In addition to his outfitting services, Ainsworth raises cattle. A local beaver dam had flooded some 40 acres of his pastureland, so he decided to take care of it using an interesting method: explosives.
Check out some footage of the explosion below. Thanks to Bernie Barringer for sharing the clip with us.

Video: Grizzly Bear Charges Hunters in Raft
These bowhunters were floating down an Alaskan river when they happened upon a group of three grizzly bear cubs. The mood of the hunters instantly changed when they saw the bears, because cubs are never far from their mother.
Sure enough, the mother grizzly spotted the hunters and immediately started to charge them.
The reason we are watching this footage today is because of the hunting guide who instinctively pulled out his revolver and fired at the water in front of the charging bear. Never get between a mother grizzly and her cubs!
