Did These Monkeys Turn Wolves into Guard Animals?

Thu, 06/18/2015 - 14:40

How did one group of gelada baboons in Ethiopia manage to live peacefully with African wolves, a predator not unlike the wild dogs that usually prey on the monkeys? That is a question that many scientists have asked, and a new study in the Journal of Mammalogy has shed more light on a strange behavior that researchers have been observing for years. "You can have a wolf and a gelada within a metre or two of each other and virtually ignoring each other for up to 2 hours at a time," co-author Vivek Venkataraman told...

Concealed Carry Myths: 9x19mm is Useless Eurotrash

Thu, 06/18/2015 - 14:04

I have irrefutable proof that the 9x19mm cartridge is, in fact, ineffective Eurotrash. Here goes. In the movie 22 Jump Street, in one of the final scenes, a goon using a Sig Sauer P229 in 9x19mm shoots Channing Tatum in the arm. Jonah Hill dove in front of the bullet to save his friend because he knew the 9x19mm projectile was completely harmless, but he leapt prematurely and failed to catch that tiny and insignificant pill in his insulated bod. I hate the word “pill” but it seems appropriate here, doesn’t it? Anyway, Channing the Wonder Boy soldiers on to hang from a flying...

Video: Raccoon Breaks into Beer Warehouse, Gets Stumbling Drunk

Thu, 06/18/2015 - 09:45

Raccoons have a reputation for thievery, but this one appears to be an alcoholic as well. Warehouse workers took this video after one of the critters broke in and started chugging beer like there was no tomorrow. After spilling a moderate amount on the floor, it gave employees a show by stumbling all over the place. At an average weight of about 20 pounds you'd expect raccoons to be lightweights, but this one actually handles itself pretty well considering all the alcohol on the floor. It even awkwardly escapes---to the laughter of the employees recording the whole...

7 Common Bow Accidents and How to Avoid Them

Thu, 06/18/2015 - 07:38

Many people think that just because bows aren't firearms, they can be handled carelessly. Just like guns, however, they can also fail or be misused. Odds are that most people who have used a bow regularly have been slapped by their own bowstring at least once, but there are much worse things that can happen. This list covers seven common---and potentially lethal---mistakes that can be easily avoided. 1. Don't torque your bow Snap! What just happened? Wed, 06/17/2015 - 16:03

What do you possibly hunt with a 4 gauge shotgun? Traditionally these black powder guns have a been used for wild fowl. Realistically, though, just about anything that gets hit with a shot from one of these massive guns will probably be shredded. So what does the recoil feel like? You can get a glimpse of what the recoil looks like below. https://youtu.be/MIIYsEURz8o Youch! Keep that up and your shoulder will be bruised in no time. Yet despite how intimidating these scatter guns look, a black powder firearm actually does not have as much recoil as one might expect. Many...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: A Victim of His Own Habits

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 15:43

For a couple of years, Dwight Schuh (of Bowhunter Magazine) and I had been kicking around the idea of possibly doing a hunt together for mountain caribou in the Northwest Territories. It finally all came together for the first hunt of the 2005 season with outfitter Eric Mikkelson, in his gorgeous section of the wild and remote Mackenzie Mountains. It was the first time Dwight and I had shared a camp, and the experience turned what had been a casual acquaintanceship into a solid, lasting friendship. Hunting has a way of doing that for people. Dwight is one of the humblest, most...

America’s Oldest Bald Eagles Dies, Sets New Record

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 14:39

The oldest wild bald eagle in America has died, according to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The agency reported that the 38-year-old male eagle---designated 03142 by researchers---was found dead alongside a road in Monroe County earlier this month. The cause of death is suspected to be a motor vehicle. "When we banded 03142 on August 5, 1977 and had no idea how very special and significant this young bald eagle would become to our nascent bald eagle restoration program," said retired DEC biologist Peter...

Video: Pink Rattlesnake Found at Utah Construction Site

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 14:23

Utah construction workers spotted a pink rattlesnake on Monday and immediately contacted Utah's Reptile Rescue Service to deal with the colorful predator. Jim Dix, director of Reptile Rescue, arrived and discovered that the animal had been spray painted pink. Dix believes that it was "likely a construction worker who used ground-marking equipment to paint the 3-4 foot venomous snake." Painting a snake is obviously very dangerous and illegal. Bears in New Jersey Steal Hot Sauce, Drink Beer, Crash Yard Sale

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 12:55

Bear encounters seem to be on the rise in New Jersey after three separate incidents that have officials scratching their heads. The first two occurred recently in Kinnelon, where homeowners say that bears have raided patio fridges in order to steal their contents, like beer and even hot sauce. The third took place over the weekend in Plainfield when a bear wandered into a yard sale. "We’ve gotten used to it but we respect them as they respect [us], you know they come in and they’re looking for food and then they go away,” homeowner Joann Tirico told Read more »

Video: 400 Pounds of Tannerite vs RV

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 12:49

Is this the largest reactive target ever? According to SEG Suppressors, the destruction of this---still mostly functional---RV just might be the biggest Tannerite explosion on the internet. In fact, they expected the explosion to be so big, SEG actually contacted local law enforcement beforehand to warn them about the possible noise. "We thought putting it inside a RV would be a much greater show of how massive the tannerite blast really is instead of just exploding it by itself," SEG wrote on YouTube. "The results...

Video: These Russian Ice Anglers’ Version of the Biathlon is Nuts

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 09:42

Russians have a fairly unique sense of humor, and the proliferation of cheap portable cameras has finally allowed their antics to be shared with the world. In this case some ice fishermen got tired of fishing and decided to create their own version of the biathlon with shotguns and what appear to be bottles for targets. Traditionally, the biathlon is a cross-country ski race in which contestants periodically stop to fire .22 rifles at targets 50 meters away. These Russians forsook their skis for boots and...

6 Animal Releases Gone Horribly Wrong

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 07:49

Capturing and relocating animals is an effective way to manage wildlife, but sometimes even experts are surprised by how animals react to releases. Most of the time, they're more than happy to escape from a cramped, smelly metal cage. However, the animals don't always walk away peacefully. Here are six animal releases that didn't go according to plan. 1. Grizzly release gone wrong This 1987 incident in the Bob Marshall Wilderness is arguably the most famous bear release gone wrong. Montana game warden Lou Kis was in the process of releasing an adult grizzly when it came back around...

Pennsylvania Lawmakers Seek End to Ban on Hunting with Semiautomatic Rifles

Tue, 06/16/2015 - 15:08

Pennsylvania lawmakers have introduced a pair of bills that would lift the state's longstanding ban on semiautomatic rifles for hunting. According to Representative Rick Saccone (R-Allegheny), who introduced HB 366, Pennsylvania is just one of two states that have a total ban on semiautomatic rifles for hunting, whereas even states historically tough on guns like California and New York eased their restrictions long ago. Saccone also introduced similar legislation in 2014 but was unable to win majority support. “Even in very liberal states like Hawaii, New York and Illinois, citizens...

Depending on which state this was filmed in, 19.3 pounds could be a record all by itself. As far as we can tell this is actually the biggest largemouth bass caught on camera from strike to net. Video: This Osprey Tried to Outfly a Bald Eagle and Failed Horribly

Tue, 06/16/2015 - 13:34

What happens when a osprey tries to sneakily grab some fish in eagle territory? The eagle gets a free meal. This bold osprey risked life and limb to grab some chow from Washington's Lake Merwin, but just when it looked like it was about to make an exit, an eagle comes up and demonstrates why it is the top bird in North America. What's most impressive is how quickly and effortlessly the eagle overtook the smaller bird. We also like how it even did some fancy acrobatics at the end to celebrate its dominance. A little bit unfair? Certainly, but such is...
