New Hampshire Collared Moose Reach 74 Percent Calf Mortality

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 13:56

It seems that New Hamsphire's already-dwindling moose population is about to become even smaller. According to WMUR, scientists from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife say that winter ticks were responsible for the deaths of 74 percent of all collared moose calves last year, which is indicative of the wider population as a whole. Despite the alarmingly high rate of mortality, experts said they are not surprised. New Hampshire's moose population has declining slowly for...

Company Plans to Release Sonar- and Camera-equipped “Fish Finder” Drone

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 12:25

It seems like everyone is jumping on the drone bandwagon these days. Now AguaDrone is hoping that fisherman will adopt drone technology as well. Their new product looks a lot like the other drones on the market with the exception of their "pod technology." These user-changeable pods can carry a sonar fish finder, a camera, or even a line flier pod. The line flier pod is pretty interesting because you can attach your line to it and fly your lure out to hard-to-reach places. We are...

Supreme Court Brushes Aside NRA Appeal to San Francisco Hollow Point Ban, Lockbox Law

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 12:09

Against the objections of two Justices, the US Supreme Court refused on Monday to consider a NRA-backed appeal against San Francisco's strict gun laws. After the decision, dissenting Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas raised questions on how the Supreme Court, as well as lower courts, dealt with cases related to the Second Amendment. "Despite the clarity with which we described the Second Amendment’s core protection for the right of self-defense, lower courts, including the ones here, have failed to protect it," Justice Scalia Read more »

Video: Predictably, This is What Happens When You Poke an Anaconda with a Stick

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 10:01

For most people, poking one of the world's largest snakes with a short stick is not a smart choice. The intelligent thing to do might be observing the green anaconda from a safe distance, taking pictures, or simply running in the opposite direction as fast as your legs can take you. Not so for this man, who is finally making up for not landing that role as Victim #2 in 1997's Anaconda. Thankfully for him, anacondas are not venomous---which would be overkill for a snake that already can grow up to 17 feet long and weigh over 200 pounds. You might want to brace yourself for this...

10 North American Animals You Definitely Can’t Outrun and Why

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 07:18

Odds are that you already know that the average human can't outrun the animals on this list. More than likely, you've heard from other hunters or hikers what you should do in case of an encounter. You've already been told how mind-blowingly fast a 1,000-pound grizzly, with its winter weight no less, can be. Yet there's a difference between hearing and seeing it for yourself. Telling you that a brown bear can run over 30 miles per hour is simply giving you a number. Showing you a bear running alongside a car, however, is pretty enlightening. Here is our list of 10 common North...

Is the State Department Trying to Gag Gun Blogs and Forums?

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 15:53

Is the federal government moving to muzzle online gun blogs and forums? The NRA's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) recently blasted a move by the Obama administration that it called a "regulatory assault." According to the NRA, a new proposed rule could change what gun owners could say or write online---or face federal charges. In the June 3 issue of the Federal Register, the Department of State...

Video: Dog Trained to Ride 3-wheeler

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 15:48

Dogs, no matter how well trained, should never be allowed to operate motor vehicles. That said, the video of this canine riding a three-wheeler is undeniably endearing. Just don't let them get too used to handling the controls, or man's best friend may just decide to take your car out for a test drive too. https://youtu.be/sJSoOEZV3Ss...

Oklahoma Bowfisherman Arrows State Record River Carpsucker

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 13:16

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation announced recently that a bowfisherman from Ringwood set a new all-tackle state record for river carpsucker last month. On May 10, Josh Brooks harvested a nine-pound, 6.4-ounce carpsucker near the mouth of the North Canadian River in Canton Lake. The fish measured an impressive 25-3/4 inches long and 17-2/4 inches in girth. It was later weighed on a certified scale and verified by a state biologist. Brooks' carpsucker smashed the previous unrestricted record of eight pounds and 11.8-ounces, which was caught by fellow bowfisherman Jeff...

Vicious Mountain Lion vs. Wolf Battle Witnessed in Vancouver

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 13:00

Mountain lions and wolves sometimes share the same territories, which means that these two top predators are often in competition with each other. Sometimes that competition can get violent, and one man driving through the backcountry of Vancouver Island managed to see something few humans have: a fatal fight between cougar and wolf. “We were in such disbelief of what we were seeing,” Rod Mizak told Global News. “At the very beginning, we were unsure of what it was,...

Video: Angler Catches Beaver while Fishing for Northern Pike

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 11:10

That looks a little too furry to be a fish. It is not unusual for anglers to hook something else than their target fish (or any kind of fish), but have you ever tried to reel in a beaver? Needless to say, it offered these two fishermen one of the strangest experiences of their lives. "While fishing in Canada this past August, my dad accidentally caught a beaver while we were jigging for northern pike," wrote YouTube user Jeremiah Johnson on the video's description. "We had not even seen the beaver in the bay we were fishing and initially my dad thought he had caught a large pike or...

Video: Man Builds Homemade 40W “Laser Shotgun,” Wreaks Havoc in Garage

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 09:06

YouTuber styropyro went viral last year with his video of his homemade 6W laser sword, a distinctly lightsaber-looking doodad. Almost a year later, he's back with another exciting laser creation: what he calls a "laser shotgun." https://youtu.be/iVrJUbeuG44 The flashy heart of the device is made up of eight parallel 5W laser beams, which project their beams into a lens. As you can see in the video above, it's capable of igniting and blowing up things in a suitably sci-fi fashion. We doubt hunters will be...

Michigan Family Panfish Fun is Just a Lake Away

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 07:53

Merriam-Webster defines panfish as “a small food fish (as a sunfish) usually taken with hook and line and not available on the market.” I take exception to the last part of that definition as yellow perch, one of the most toothsome of all pisces, is certainly a panfish and is commercially available across the country. Perhaps a more commonly accepted popular definition is more applicable: fish that rarely grow larger than a frying pan or fish that are suitable for the pan. But there’s no doubt about the first half of the definition as food fish; panfish are great in the pan. And...

There is a lot of debate over whether gun disarms are practical, and if so, which methods work best. While it seems that everybody seems to have their own opinion and technique, some stand out. Below are five men (instructors, martial artists, soldiers) who have perfected the art of slapping a gun out of your hands. True to form, these videos are highly impressive and entertaining, but are they effective? Video: This Is the Craziest Turkey Headshot You Will Ever See

Fri, 06/05/2015 - 16:05

Turkey hunters always want to aim for the head so they can dispatch the animals as quickly as possible and so they can save as much meat as possible. There are even companies that make braodheads specifically designed to "decapitate" turkeys. This archer was using a Bullhead broadhead, and let's just say it made an extremely clean cut. The turkey's eyes are still blinking on the ground after this mind-blowing shot. This video is pretty graphic as it shows a turkey decapitation and the aftermath, so please be advised. https://youtu.be/1cxylsIUh8o?t=74...

Residents in Alaska Say It’s “Raining Lampreys”

Fri, 06/05/2015 - 16:01

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) stated on Wednesday that it received a large amount of calls from Fairbanks residents regarding "eel-like creatures" falling from the sky. At least four specimens of Arctic lamprey have been found across the area, including in a parking lot, a restaurant, and lawns. Lampreys are a species of jawless fish that prefers freshwater habitats near the coast---and they certainly did not grow wings and fly into Fairbanks. So how are these strange, blood-sucking fish ending up on land? "The answer is probably gulls," the ADFG speculated on Read more »

Video: The Drone You Can Ride Like a Horse

Fri, 06/05/2015 - 15:06

Considering how this contraption puts the man in unmanned aerial vehicle, it might be more accurate to call it a hover bike instead. This electric tricopter, named the "Flike" by its designers, was built by flight enthusiasts in Bay Zoltan Nonprofit Ltd., a research network in Hungary. According to Flike's website, the vehicle itself is a coaxial tricopter propelled by six rotors that keep it off the ground like a very small helicopter. The prototype currently runs on lithium polymer batteries, which only allows up to 20 minutes of flight...

Swedish Angler Jumps into Freezing Water for Behemoth 222-pound Halibut

Fri, 06/05/2015 - 14:44

After more than an hour fighting a halibut larger---and probably older---than he was, Swedish angler Erik Axner jumped into the freezing waters off Norway's Loften Islands to release his catch. The 24-year-old hooked the massive fish during a recent trip to northern Norway and called it the catch of a lifetime. "It was a dream fish---almost two meters long and incredibly well fed, thick and wide," he told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. The angler compared the fight to Hemingway's classic novel, The Old...

Florida Woman Catches Possible World Record Flier

Fri, 06/05/2015 - 12:44

For one woman in Marianna, Florida, the perfect Mother's Day gift was a new state record flier. Twila Gates was fishing with her son and one of his friends on May 9 when she reeled in a one-pound, 5.6-ounce flier from an unspecified pond in Jackson County. It measured 12 inches long and 11.8 inches in girth. At that size, state biologists speculate that the fish could be a contender for the world record as well. "If Gate’s flier is submitted to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), this could also become the new world record," stated a Read more »
