Wed, 06/03/2015 - 13:52

New this year from FNH USA are compact models of their FNS series of guns. Available in both 9x19mm and .40 S&W, the Compact models share the same basic design features as their bigger siblings but are sized for carry. I recently received an FNS-9 Compact model to run through the wringer. Let’s take a look. The walking tour The FNS-9 Compact is a striker-fired (hammerless) gun consisting of a stainless steel slide and polymer frame, coming in at 6.7 inches long. Of course, the important guts like slide...

Newark Officials Warn Residents Not to Eat Fish Swimming in City Streets after Flooding

Wed, 06/03/2015 - 12:32

Have you ever wanted to fish right from your front porch? For some residents of Newark, New Jersey, that is now a possibility---but not exactly something they want. Heavy rains pummeled the city recently, flooding nearby streams, lakes, and even sewers. According to Fox News, the flooding is so severe in some places that fish are swimming freely down the road. Many residents, including some anglers, have turned out to try and save the fish and stem the flooding. Others, however, see it...

Quiz: Which Images of These 15 Massive Fish Are Photoshopped?

Wed, 06/03/2015 - 11:40

If it looks too good to be true, it often is. Odds are that you have seen at least one fishing photo that made you wonder if it had been photoshopped---and the bigger the fish, the greater your suspicion. Gone are the days when a photo was irrefutable evidence of a hard-won battle. Now the first thing we do is scour every photo for the telltale signs of alteration. Yet you aren't likely to spot missing shadows or extra limbs in a photo doctored by an expert. However, photoshopping fish is more difficult than you might imagine. Small alterations may go unnoticed, but you will never make a...

Video: This is What Noodling a Tarpon Looks Like

Wed, 06/03/2015 - 09:45

What does noodling a tarpon feel like? The woman found out the hard way that feeding a tarpon is quite unlike feeding a bird. After all, birds don't exactly inhale your entire hand for some birdseed. If this kind of thing appeals to you, then there are a number of places where you can feed tarpon for a nominal fee. One of them is Robbie's Marina in Isamorada, Florida, where this video was reportedly filmed. Be careful, though. The inside of a tarpon's enormous mouth is lined with a multitude of tiny villiform teeth, so unless you want your arm turned into a pincushion, it's...

Fenwick Elite Tech Bass Casting Rod

Wed, 06/03/2015 - 07:42

Growing up, I was crazy about catching bass. Right up until I went off to college, I’d be out fishing every chance I got. As the years went on, I drifted away from bass angling. I mean, if I caught one when I was fishing for something else, it was cool, but I just wasn’t excited about it. Then a few years ago, I caught the bug again. My friends got me back to targeting bass, but the real driving force is my son. He gets more excited than I ever did when he catches a bass of any size. His enthusiasm got me gearing up for bass and I have to admit, I’m really enjoying fishing for bucket...

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 15:18

Researchers from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recruited the aid of a charter boat to reel in what is believed to be the largest tiger shark ever tagged on the East Coast. According to The State, Captain Chip Michalove of Outcast Sport Fishing was the one to land the giant predator near Hilton Head on May 18. When it was brought alongside the boat, biologists measured the female shark to be around 12 feet and two inches long. Dubbed "Chessie" after the nearby Chechessee River, the shark...

Video: Angler Loses Pike to Hungry Snapping Turtle

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 14:51

Of all the voracious predators you could lose your catch to, snapping turtles are not usually at the top of the list. Well, tell that to this determined reptile. After spotting a pike on the line, the snapping turtle decides to clamp onto the fish's tail and hold on for dear life. It even got a head start on descaling the fish before the angler decided to be magnanimous and offer the turtle a free meal. Both common and alligator snapping turtles will eat just about anything they can wrap their jaws around. Sometimes, this can even include fingers. Anglers are advised to be wary around...

Wyoming Man Busted for Using Flying Trike to Harass Elk

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 14:38

Late last month the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (GFD) announced that a 53-year-old Casper man was convicted of harassing elk after he repeatedly flew over a herd on his ultralight trike. It was hard for Kevin Christopherson to deny the charges, seeing as how he uploaded a video of the flight to YouTube late last year. On May 20, a Natrona County Circuit Court Judge sentenced Christopherson to a fine of $1,500, a one-year loss of hunting privileges, one year of jail time suspended, and...

Legendary Oregon Mule Deer “Buck Norris” Found Dead

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 11:38

Shed hunters and wildlife watchers say it is the end of an era following the death of a massive mule deer near Bend, Oregon. Famous for his large, non-typical antlers, the deer that locals dubbed "Buck Norris" was found dead on Friday after an automobile accident. According to KTVZ, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) estimated the buck's age at around 10 years old---which is practically ancient when it comes to wild deer. It has been a long reign for this legendary buck, one...

Video: Incredibly Irresponsible Man “Tests” .45 ACP Suppressor Indoors

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 10:34

File this high up on the "what the heck were you thinking?" list. The shooter in this video decided to test out a SilencerCo Osprey 45 in what looks like an apartment bedroom. It's incredibly dumb to fire a gun inside of an apartment, but using a cardboard box filled with who knows what as a backstop elevates this to a whole new level of dangerous. At the end of the video it appears the man's only regret was getting oil on his sheets, but things could have easily been much worse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dgPRNPpv1M...

In Memory of Randy Llanes

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 10:12

We here at OutdoorHub and Carbon Media Group were saddened to hear about the passing of fellow angler Randy Llanes. Randy was struck and killed by a swordfish in Kona, Hawaii last Friday during a spearfishing trip. Family and friends remember the angler as a kind-hearted man who would do anything for those he loved. “Randy would do anything for you, he would take his shirt off his back for you. That’s the kind of guy he was,” Bomboy Llanes, Randy's cousin, told local press. Randy once...

20 Outrageous Glock Torture Tests

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 07:41

Glocks have a sterling reputation for reliability, and regardless of what people think of the gun that put Gaston's name on the map, most will usually admit that Glocks are workhorses. They are rugged, cheap, and usually easy to replace. Due to this, Glock pistols are a popular choice for torture tests---especially ones in which the gun isn't expected to survive. Rigorous, fact-based testing can be very useful to a well-informed gun owner, even if they are sometimes a bit excessive. Then there are tests like these. We're not saying that these "experiments" are without any value...

Video: Inside the Rebranding of the AK-47 as a “Weapon of Peace”

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 07:36

The Obama administration's sanctions against Russian companies and individuals over the conflict in Ukraine have had quite the impact on Russia's economy. Kalashnikov Group, the operator of the "main" Russian AK manufacturing facility, was one of the organizations targeted by the sanctions. With its access to the highly profitable American firearms market cut off, Kalashnikov Group is focusing its efforts on military contracts. As part of that move, the company has embarked upon a marketing effort to present its arms as "weapons of peace." VICE News spoke with Kalashnikov Group CEO...

Texas Legislature Passes Open Carry Bill, Governor Promises to Sign

Mon, 06/01/2015 - 15:49

After a tumultuous fight in the legislature, open carry may soon finally be legal in Texas. The state House and Senate approved HB 910 in a stunning victory for open carry advocates on Friday, sending the bill to Governor Greg Abbott, who had promised to sign the bill if it came to his desk. "Open Carry just passed in both the Texas House & Senate. Next destination: My Pen," Abbott wrote on Twitter. If signed into law, the bill would overturn a ban on open carry that has lasted for more than 125 years. Texas was one of the first states...

Mon, 06/01/2015 - 15:26

Did he really think he was going to get away with that? The Sun Sentinel reports that a 19-year-old man was arrested after stuffing an AR-15-style rifle---bipod and all---into his pants during a visit to a Fort Lauderdale gun shop. Marlon Paul Alvarez then attempted to limp out of the store unseen, but was quickly confronted by the shop's owner, Kevin Hughes, and subdued. While the rifle was recovered, Alvarez himself was able to escape after a short scuffle and was later...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: Moon Over My Antlers

Mon, 06/01/2015 - 15:17

Silhouetted against a clear blue sky, perhaps two miles away and 2,500 feet above us, were two sets of caribou antlers. One dwarfed the other. Indeed, had the larger one not been so very tall and massive, my naked eye would probably never have noticed them there on the skyline at all without the aid of binoculars. They were in the saddle of a high shoulder-ridge near the summit of what my guide, Gerald Buyck, had referred to as Castle Peak. Gerald and I were on a grizzly bear hunt together---hunting from a cabin on Elliot Lake, deep in the wilderness of Canada’s Yukon Territory....

Vince Vaughn Says Banning Guns is Like “Banning Forks to Stop Making People Fat”

Mon, 06/01/2015 - 12:33

Actor and screenwriter Vince Vaughn is well-known for his pro-gun stance, but the Wedding Crashers star surprised his fans when he compared a ban on guns to "banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat" in a recent interview with British GQ. "I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home. We don't have the right to bear arms because of burglars; we have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and...

Video: Rare White-faced Fawn in Michigan Named “Dragon”

Mon, 06/01/2015 - 11:46

Even among piebald deer, this white-faced fawn is unique. According MLive.com, this strange looking fawn was born at Deer Tracks Junction---an animal farm open to the public---in Cedar Springs, Michigan. In the wild, piebald fawns are often rejected by their mothers, as is the case here, and will inevitably succumb to the elements or predators if left alone. Fortune smiled on this young fawn, however, and it is now in the care of the farm owners, who named it "Dragon."...

Video: Violent Bear Brawl Caught on Trail Cam

Mon, 06/01/2015 - 11:32

Trail cams are often good for a candid look into the lives of bears. More often than not, bruins are more than content to while away their hours rubbing up on trees, scrounging for food, or just laying in the sun. Sometimes, however, a trail cam will capture something different. We're not sure why these two bears decide to duke it out, but this short video has one of the most intense---and quickest---bear brawls we've seen to date. The actual fight itself only took a few seconds, but you can see in the video that it's almost entirely one-sided. Once dominance is asserted and the other bear...
