Concealed Carry Myths: Double-action Handguns Suck for Self-defense
Recently, there has been much rekindled and rehashed debate on whether striker-fired guns are the spawn of Satanic fire-breathing seahorses or the most effective self-defense technology ever to grace a holster.
Some folks remain convinced that striker-fired guns like Glocks have trigger-press motions that are too easy and too short. According to this view, negligent and unintended discharges are bound to happen, more so than with other designs. Under stress, your body does weird things, one of which is a sympathetic muscular response. For example, clenching one hand will cause the other to...
Video: Incredibly Buff Kangaroo Dominates Australian Town
Nobody knows why "Dave," a six-foot, six-inch male kangaroo with an intimidating physique, is currently living in the Brisbane neighborhood of North Lake. According to CNN, the muscle-bound marsupial has been wandering all over town for about a week, startling residents and generally being a nuisance.
“He's very intimidating, he's a big boy,” local resident Linda Hellyer, who had recently run into the animal while walking her dogs, told Read more »
Whopping 550-pound Grouper Breaks Kayak Angler’s Rod
Trying to reel in a goliath grouper from a kayak can be dangerous, even for an experienced angler like Captain Jonathan Black. A grouper's unpredictable tantrums can easily overturn a kayak, knock an angler into the water, or, in Black's case, snap a rod with one powerful twist.
"I thought he was going to kill me!" Black said in a video of the catch. "He destroyed the rod! Toasted!"
You can see video of the catch below:

Man Booted from “No-limit” Fishing Lake for Catching Too Many Fish
Does a no-limit pay lake really have no limits? Not according to Kentucky angler Ron Riordan, who said he was recently kicked out of one pay lake in South Louisville because he caught too many fish. Riordan recently posted a video of a confrontation between him and a representative of Horseshoe Pay Lake, who told the angler that he was catching too much fish and needed to leave.
"You're done here. Period," said the representative in the video.
"Why am I done? It's a no-limit lake," Riordan protested.
"For you, there's a limit on you," the representative answered.

Fishing is a multi-billion dollar industry in Minnesota. The annual opening day of fishing season is a huge event and the governor is involved in a big way. This year, even the walleyes cooperated.
For more than half a decade, opening day of the Minnesota fishing season for walleye and pike has been an event in which the governor of the state actively participates in order to draw attention to the state’s amazing angling opportunities. The opener is held the second weekend in May, and the weather can be all over the chart. So can the fishing. In the past, governors have dealt...
Police: iPhone Saved UK Man from Shotgun Blast
A 25-year-old man in Cheshire County, England is alive after being shot with a sawed-off shotgun thanks in part to his iPhone.
According to information released by the Chesire Constabulary, Daniel Kennedy confronted a group of young men last October when one of them, 19-year-old Ryan Duggan, pulled out a modified hunting shotgun and shot the man in the chest and abdomen. The iPhone, which was in Kennedy's pocket, absorbed most of the pellets, allowing the man to flee and contact police.
Following a recent three-day trial, Duggan was found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent...
Video: Tiny Bear Cubs Wrestle in Yosemite
Bears will be bears, and when it comes to cubs, that means a lot of play. Jeff Molyneaux recorded this short video of two bear cubs wrestling while driving home from a hiking trip in Yosemite National Park. The road may not be the best place for these tiny cubs to be, but they eventually made it safely back to the treeline after their little sparring match ended. Although she doesn't appear on video, Molyneaux also added that momma bear was nearby and watching.
"It is still one of the best experiences I have had on a camping trip," he said.
Warning: the video you are about to see is...

Video: Tigers Hunt, Take Down Asian Black Bear
Did you know that a group of tigers is sometimes referred to as an "ambush?" That term is certainly suitable for these apex predators. Individually, tigers are a hunting powerhouse capable of bringing down the largest of prey. Tigers rarely hunt as a group, but when they do, the results can be terrifying even to other predators such as the Asian black bear.
In fact, black bears sometimes find themselves on a tiger's menu, especially when their territories overlap. Experts believe that some tigers have developed such a keen taste for bears that they will imitate prey noises to lure bears...
Missouri Angler “Bear Hugs” Record Striped Bass
Lawrence Dillman of Rockaway Beach, Missouri caught a striped bass so big, he had to literally tackle the fish to bring it out of the water. According to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), Dillman caught the massive 65-pound, two-ounce fish from Bull Shoals Lake on May 21. Laid out, the fish measured nearly 50 inches long and 36 inches around.
"I fought the giant for over 45 minutes until I got him to shallow water," Dillman told officials. "I then bear hugged the fish and got it out of the...
Wisconsin Lawmakers Consider Legalizing “Blaze Pink” for Hunting
Hunters in Wisconsin may see much more pink-colored clothing in the woods next deer season. According to The Chicago Tribune, a group of state legislators is planning to announce a bill that would legalize blaze pink for deer hunters. Current state regulations state that deer hunters must have at least 50 percent of their outer garments above the waist, including hats, be colored blaze orange. If the bill is passed, pink would also satisfy that requirement.
Despite the...
Video: Jerry Miculek Rapid-fires Two Double-barreled 1911s
In normal circumstances, shooting 20 rounds from a 1911 in less than 1.5 seconds---on target, no less---is absurd. Even when you throw in a second 1911, it's still a tall order for speed shooter Jerry Miculek. He may be a wizard on the firing line, but there's only so much he can do to challenge the laws of physics.
So in comes the double-barreled 1911 from Arsenal Firearms. Introduced roughly 100 years after the original, this "Second Century" 1911 from the Italian gun maker offers shooters twice the firepower and twice the fun. After all, who needs four arms when you can just make your...
Possible Record Sturgeon Leads Minnesota Anglers Mile Downstream
When James Yerheart of Brownsdale, Minnesota went out fishing on the Mississippi River earlier this month, the last thing he expected was to capture a potential state record. Instead, the 34-year-old truck technician planned on having a good time with his fishing buddies and to maybe catch some nice-sized walleye. However, all that changed when Yerheart hooked a monster sturgeon estimated to weigh over 100 pounds.
//
The one that DIDN'T get away! Congrats to James Yerhart of Brownsdale who says he caught this 100 pound sturgeon over the weekend. abc6.tv/87k8l

Video: Getting Shot “in the Name of Art”
A short documentary recently published by The New York Times takes a look at one of the most well-known pieces of performance art in recent memory: Chris Burden's Shoot. In the performance, Burden's friend, Bruce Dunlap, shot him in the arm at close range with a .22 rifle.
The brief video explores the thinking behind the piece and how it didn't necessarily go as planned.

Many of Burden's performances involved risking his life or bodily harm, though he switched to more benign pieces later in his career. He passed away at the age of...

50 Homemade Shotgun Shells You Should Probably Never Try Out
This is our mega list of homemade shotgun shells that you should probably never actually make at home. Although many are likely safe to shoot out of your average 12 gauge, keep in mind that these shells can be unpredictable at best. In addition to being inaccurate---it'd probably be more effective to just throw your gun---these shells can be dangerous to both you and your firearm.
For those reasons we highly advise you to avoid assembling these yourself. After all, why risk your own life and limbs when people have already done so and recorded the results? Thanks to the efforts of...

...Study: Ancient Snakes Had Ankles, Toes
A new study by researchers at Yale University found that the ancestors of modern snakes likely had no forelimbs, but did have hind legs. This is not especially surprising since scientists have long believed that snakes evolved from ancient lizards, but researchers say the new discovery has resolved many age-old debates on the origins of snakes.
“We generated the first comprehensive reconstruction of what the ancestral snake was like,” Allison Hsiang, lead author of the study, said in a press release from...

Officials Move to Treat Lake Erie’s “Vampire Fish” Problem
Sea lampreys, also known as the "vampires of the Great Lakes," have caused no shortage of headaches for wildlife officials trying to mitigate their effects on native fish.
The eel-like creatures were originally native to the Atlantic Ocean and certain lakes in New York and Vermont, but eventually found their way into the Great Lakes, where they decimated populations of fish such as lake trout, chub, and lake whitefish. With no natural predators of their own, these vampire fish have caused problems in the surrounding area for decades until the development of a chemical lampricide in the...
