Get Ready for Lake St. Clair and Detroit River Muskies

Mon, 06/01/2015 - 07:41

The last significant opening day of fishing season in Michigan, the opening day for muskellunge in Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River, and the Detroit River, arrives the first Saturday of June. Because the water drains from Lake Huron, which is cold, through the St. Clair River, the spawning season is delayed and Lake St. Clair and its connecting waters open more than a month later than the rest of the state (the Ontario waters of the lake and rivers open the same day, too). Lake St. Clair is an outstanding muskellunge fishery. Last year, of the 30 muskies entered in the Department of...

Due to the discontinuation of the round and high demand from collectors, a single cartridge can cost well over $70. As for the handgun itself, bidding starts at $5,000. Ian from Forgotten Weapons explains just about everything you need to know about this tiny pocket...

When the hour ended and Miller officially landed in the record books, the exahusted shooter took...

Video: Why You Shouldn’t Try to Break Up a Ram Fight

Fri, 05/29/2015 - 09:58

There are just some things you don't get in the middle of. A duel between two hard-hitting rams is pretty high on this list, and this motorist found out the hard way that these animals can pack a wallop. In the video below, you can see the driver behind the Toyota Camry try to squeeze through while the rams were preparing for charge. Unfortunately for the vehicle's front bumper, it didn't make it in time. We wonder if the result would have been different if the car was a Ram, if only so we could use the title "Rams Ramming a Ram." The only thing better is if a Dodge Ram pickup passed by, so...

Video: Mountain Lion Hazard Blocks 18th Hole on Golf Course

Fri, 05/29/2015 - 09:27

Mountain lions may have a reputation for being powerful predators, but they have a playful side as well. Golfers at the Desert Mountain Golf Course in Arizona just had to wait while this big cat had its way with the flag on the 18th hole of the Chiricahua Course. Seemingly fascinated by the flag, the mountain lion tries everything in its power to bring it down. In fact, it reminds us of a house cat. A very, very large house cat with razor-sharp claws and teeth. From the respectable distance they kept from the cat, we're sure these golfers didn't mind waiting before finishing their...

Build Semi-permanent Beds for Crappie Fishing Success

Thu, 05/28/2015 - 13:45

Author's note: Steve McCadams has guided fishermen to crappie on Kentucky Lake for 40+ years. This info on crappie beds comes straight from the accomplished angler himself. I put out stake beds where crappie can live. I drive wooden stakes---usually 1x1s or 2x2s---into the bottom of the lake. Often, they’re called tomato stakes, because this type of wooden stake is used to hold up tomato bushes. These wooden stakes are four to six feet long, and I drive them into the lake bed about 12-to 18 inches deep. I want the stake beds to stick up three to four feet off the bottom. I use a...

Anyone who's ever been to the summit of New Hampshire's Mount Washington knows it can be a bit breezy at the top. At a height of around 6,300 feet, Mount Washington boasts the highest peak in the Northeastern United States, and it is downright notorious for its weather. It's so bad that the slogan of the Mount Washington Observatory is literally "Home of the World's Worst Weather." If you're wondering what an objective definition of "worst" is, consider the fact that the mountain is often considered the windiest in the world. Until 2010, Mount Washington has held the world record for...

There may be millions of dollars in gold bullion at the bottom of Lake Michigan, and those searching for it say they have found the first clue to its location. Kevin Dykstra and Frederick J. Monroe made news late last year after they discovered the remains of the 17th century French ship Le Griffon, the first ship to sail the Great Lakes. While the two men are still investigating the shipwreck, they said that they were not looking for historic ships when they discovered the wreckage. Instead they were looking for something a lot more lucrative. "We were looking for $2 million...

Thu, 05/28/2015 - 09:35

Biking on groomed, well-lit trails is not usually considered a dangerous activity, especially if you're taking a stroll through Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Alaska. At least, you don't consider it dangerous until a mad cow moose charges out of the tree and blindsides you. According to this video, these four mountain bikers found themselves on the wrong trail at the wrong time when they came too close to a mother moose and her two calves. "Needless to say we got lucky," stated the video's description. No kidding. The cow moose charged at the bikers and appeared to have at least attempted to...
