Do Pop-Its make good targets? Kirsten Joy Weiss explores (VIDEO)

Fri, 08/12/2016 - 08:30

Sharpshot Kirsten Joy Weiss looked at an unconventional item as a potential target in her latest video.

Pop its, bang snaps, snaps, snappers, poppers, party snaps, whatever you choose to call them, they’re those little guys you get at the firework stand that “explode” or pop when you throw them to the ground. No doubt, they’re small, about the size of a .22, but Kirsten Joy set out to see if they were too small to be used as an effective target.

It takes a few shots, but, of course, she eventually nails it. And in the end, Kirsten Joy gives them a B+, noting that they’re easy to set up, challenging, cheap and, although not as reactive as typical exploding targets, still somewhat reactive.

Air Force pilot explains ejecting from jet at supersonic speeds (VIDEO)

Sat, 08/06/2016 - 13:17

Air Force pilot Capt. Brian Udell is one of the only pilots in history to survive after ejecting from a fighter at supersonic speeds. The force of the air moving at more than 768 mph on his body was so strong that it nearly killed him.

“It felt like somebody had just hit me with a train,” said Udell. “When I went out into the wind stream, it ripped my helmet right off my head, broke all the blood vessels in my head and face, my head was swollen the size of a basketball and my lips were the size of cucumbers.

Feds indict Kansas gun dealer for selling pistol to felon

Fri, 08/05/2016 - 13:36

A Kansas gun dealer has been indicted in federal court on charges of selling a gun to a prohibited person.

Charles Black, owner of Triple B Guns and Ammo in Parsons, Kansas, knowingly sold a Kel-Tec PF-9 pistol to a convicted felon, according to court documents.

The felon involved in the Dec. 3 deal was a confidential informant with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

According to court documents, Black has been charged with a felony and the feds seized his store’s inventory comprised of dozens of firearms and thousands of rounds of ammo.

His business is still registered with the Kansas Secretary of State, with the last filing in December 2015.

Black is scheduled to appear back in a Wichita federal court on Aug. 24.

Inforgraphic shows musicians killed by guns

Fri, 08/05/2016 - 09:00

Mike “DJ” Pizzo over at Cuepoint put together an interesting infographic showing musicians who have lost their lives to firearms.

Pizzo notes the list includes suicides, but also admits that it isn’t exhaustive. Nonetheless, it’s enough to pique interest for a number of reasons. For example, the 1950s section listed a single musician, but as you scroll down through each decade, the number steadily increases.

Giant gummy bears are tough, but are they .50 cal tough (VIDEO)

Thu, 08/04/2016 - 18:36

One of the more popular ballistic tests done across YouTube in recent years has been on the enigmatic 5 lb. giant gummy. It turns out they are almost impenetrable. Almost.

Richard with FullMag started small with some handgun love, then moved very quickly in light of oppressively hot Southern afternoon temperatures to .50 BMG via Barrett.

An oldie but goodie: The 41 Magnum (VIDEO)

Wed, 08/03/2016 - 19:05

The unappreciated .41 Remington Magnum dates back to the Johnson Administration and was brought about by shooting greats Elmer Keith,  Bill Jordan and Skeeter Skelton– and Hickok45 has a classic S&W Model 57 N-frame chambered in this vintage pill.

These rounds were a compromise between the .357 and .44 Mag, and Keith/Jordan/Skelton petitioned the gun industry that the round and guns chambered for it was needed.

Hickok45 seems to have no problem with the round at all.

A walk through the nursery where .22LR ammo is born

Tue, 08/02/2016 - 18:30

Rimfire master 22Plinkster got a chance to visit the CCI and Speer factory and to see where some standard velocity 50-pack bricks go from raw material to finished cartridge.

From making a cup from a sheet of brass, to the wash, annealing and shaking, the dried cup gets formed to the right length and caliber. Then it gets headed, marked, and charged with a primer into the rim of the newly formed case. Once dried, it is charged with propellant and a bullet is seated, waxed and packed.

Now if only the prices would go back to 2012…

Armor torture test: M240 vs. Level III plate (VIDEO)

Mon, 08/01/2016 - 18:10

Eric from IV8888 drops a belt of 7.62x51mm NATO on an AR500 plate to see just how the hard plate reacts to the full-auto treatment.

The M240B, the U.S. variant of the classic FN MAG 58 used throughout the world for the past half-century, is the standard general purpose machine gun of the U.S. military, replacing the venerable M60 over the past couple decades.

This video should be listed under “spalling” in the dictionary.

The difference between derringers and Deringers (VIDEO)

Fri, 07/29/2016 - 15:05

Today almost any single or double-barrel mouse gun is referred to as a derringer, but the folks at the Cody Firearms Museum introduces you to a legit Deringer.

Ashley Hlebinsky, the Robert W. Woodruff Curator at the Cody, walks you through these small guns in a brief video and shows off one of the original pocket pistols.

Mousetrap cheese hunk sniping (VIDEO)

Wed, 07/27/2016 - 19:05

Richard from FullMag along with Matt Best from Black Rifle Coffee mount a rat trap on a 2″x4″ then try to pick off the cheese before the trap snaps.

Of course the trap isn’t faster than a high-velo rifle round, but you have to admit that the semi-gelatinous cheese chunk is a tricky target. Good thing they have a .50 cal.

Old-school German MP5SD is so quiet you can hear the trigger reset (VIDEO)

Mon, 07/25/2016 - 16:49

Machine Gun Mike breaks out a select-fire, suppressed HK MP5SD built by Urbach Precision and shows you why it’s so muffly.

It’s got all the goodies, being a suppressed SBR with both three-round burst and full-auto selector switch and on-board en-quieter that is capable of putting the hush on even super-sonic hardball. Yup, the MP5SD was developed by Heckler & Koch in 1976 for military commandos and was designed to allow standard NATO ball, already in service for subguns and handguns, to be used in the integrally suppressed little SD, but still be quiet enough to where mechanical action noise is all you hear.

Who knew that a steel plate could ring so true when being repeatedly stitched by 9mm?

DIY gun designer attempts to make an scary Mass. ‘assault rifle’ (VIDEO)

Mon, 07/25/2016 - 16:27

Jonathan Field gets rid of the stupid safeties, goes full Vogue dump mag (with clips) capable of holding 325 rounds, adds a collapsible buttstock, pistol grip, bayonet(s), and some Scope mouthwash in his build for a non-Massachusetts compliant assaulty weapon.

Warning, the hi-capacity magazine has two clips.

And the Scope is 16 ounces.

You are not prepared.

Quick, call, Maura Healey.

Shooting a swinging penny in a trick shot, backwards (VIDEO)

Fri, 07/22/2016 - 19:37

In honor of CCI’s new Copper 22LR rounds, 22Plinkster went old school and returned to his trick shot roots: attempting to nail a swinging penny with his back turned, through the help of a mirror.

The CCI Copper round is a zippy (1850fps~) 21-grain hollow-point rimfire that is one of the fastest on the market.

But is it fast enough for backwards swinging pennies?

Bike helmets are DOT rated, but how about FMJ? (VIDEO)

Thu, 07/21/2016 - 16:47

Gifted a pre-owned and only wrecked once full-face motorbike helmet, Demolition Ranch went to the gun vault for some more destructive testing.

Rimfire pistols, 12 ga. bird shot, rifle practice with the .50 cal– you know what’s next.

Talk about road rash.

The Henry Big Boy .357 is a cowboy gun with class (VIDEO)

Tue, 07/19/2016 - 19:18

Hickok45 tries out a nice Henry Big Boy, a hard-hitting but easy shooting lever-action rifle in .38/.357 that does the job while looking good.

With its brass receiver and barrel band complemented by a black American walnut stock, Henry has been making these guns in .44 Mag, .45 LC and .357 since 2008. In Hick’s variant, it will hold 10 rounds in the tubular magazine held under its characteristic octagonal barrel.

And as Hickok shows, it will bust a watermelon or Kentucky two-liter with style.

Guns N’ Roses caught at Canadian border with a gun (VIDEO)

Tue, 07/19/2016 - 18:14

While traveling into Canada for a single concert as part of their Not in This Lifetime tour, Guns N’ Roses was detained at the Canadian border when border officials found one of the band members was toting a gun.

“You know, it happens: You can forget you have a fucking gun,” Axl Rose told a Toronto crowd Saturday night.

He then joked, “Wasn’t my gun.”

All joking aside, Rose said they weren’t arrested, only detained, and border officials were very nice and understanding.

And just like that, the Triple Double was born (VIDEO)

Mon, 07/18/2016 - 19:23

Back in the Spring, Demolition Ranch brought us the Quad Barrel 12 gauge, a DP12 sistered to a pair of Remy 870s, now they are back in the heat of Summer with something 50 percent cheesier.

Yup, ditching the two puny 870s, Matt and Co added two more DP12s to the original which, when fully loaded, gives him 48 12 gauge shells and the ability to rack all three shotguns with one very energetic motion.

Practical? Hell no. Fun? Hell yes.

Is a near-miss from a .50 BMG enough to kill? (VIDEO)

Wed, 07/13/2016 - 17:40

The Demolition Ranch team is burning lean muscle tissue in an attempt to confirm or deny the old adage that the .50 cal is so powerful that “close enough” is “good enough.”

“I’ve actually been told to my face that– if it passes within three feet of you– that shock wave has enough power to rip an arm off, or just to cave in your chest and kill you,” says Matt. “Well I’ve shot a long of .50 BMG and I am here to show you the facts.”

Sometimes gun rumors and are just that.
