DIY: Visually Distinct Dummy Rounds
As I’ve ramped up my dry fire over the past six months, one of the things I’ve really come to appreciate are weighted dummy rounds. Even loaded to 10 rounds for IDPA SSP or USPSA Production, good weighted dummy rounds double the weight of a magazine. In a division like CDP/Single Stack or Limited where you’re reloading will full magazines, practicing inserting the mag with enough force to depress the fully-loaded magazine spring becomes a key part of practice.
...Concealed and Open Carry Safety – 118
A concealed carry permit holder walking into a Walmart was tackled and stripped of his pistol by someone who saw him putting it on in the parking lot. This video brings up a lot of things that both concealed and open carriers need to be aware of:
...USPSA/Competitive Shooting Primer
I found this video today, thought it did a really good job illustrating some of the basics of competition.
If you want a more in-depth primer, check out my series on getting into competitive shooting here.

I’ve Got Some Work to Do
This morning I’ve been cruising through some old match videos trying to come up with a game plan of things I need to work on in dry fire, and I found something from an old Wake County Action Pistol match that I thought I’d share.
...New IDPA Divison: Compact Carry Pistol
Flying a bit under the radar of the firehose of SHOT Show news coming out this week is this announcement from IDPA, sent to members via email:
...In the Triangle? Interested in Competition? Check This Out
Linoge over at WallsoftheCity.net went and shot the Wake County Action Pistol match last night, and he wrote up his thoughts about it here.
“Be safe, and have fun.” Well, hell, I can do that.
Yep, that’s what it’s about.

Frightening Pranks: How Often Does Someone Pull A Gun?
“I’m not sure if this counts or not, but my dad put me on the TV show, Scare Tactics. The episode never aired, because I pulled out a gun…”
She was set up by her father, who didn’t know that she carried a gun. Without telling the whole story here, just know she won Scare Tactics.
I love pranks, but I’ve gotten to the point that I don’t bother with the crazy scare pranks, because I couldn’t live with myself if someone got hurt.

[Listen] Gun Belts – Sig Braces – Voicemails
This week we talk about gun belts. There’s a lot of BS spewed on the internet about belts, and we sort through it based on our experience. Some folks like leather belts because they have a more traditional look, and they tend to flex and form to your body real nice. Other folks like the “tactical” nylon type belts because they are more adjustable, and can be extremely stiff.
...NatGeo Shoots Balloons
Okay, so the results of this video shouldn’t be all that surprising, but I thought the slow-mo footage was pretty cool and worth sharing.
(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));
Post by National Geographic Channel. If you’ve watched any ammo tests on YouTube the amount of water that the bullet penetrates is about what you’d expect, but I thought balloons were an interesting way to illustrate it.
I’d like to see it again with different rifles.

Carry A Knife
You never know when it will come in handy…
Sad that there were all those people standing around wanting to help saying “Who’s got a knife? Anybody have a knife? We need a knife!”
Stay sharp.

I Won’t Be At SHOT Show
I’ve been getting a lot of folks asking if I’m going to be at SHOT show, and the answer is: nope.
...‘Tarheel Traveler’ on NC’s Carbine Williams
Last week the WRAL ‘Tarheel Traveler’ segment was about Carbine Williams, an NC resident best known for creating the M1 Carbine.
I tried to embed the video here on the site, but it seems that they don’t have a way to do that. If you click here, it’ll take you to the video on WRAL’s website. It’s a well done, interesting piece.
Also, if you’re in the Triangle area, and you’d like to see some more stuff about Carbine Williams, head down to the NC Museum of History (Downtown Raleigh, and it’s free), and there’s a big exhibit on Williams. They actually have his shop put together inside the museum and you can walk around and see all the guns, tools, and everything he used to build guns.

Regarding the ATF crack down on the Sig brace
In classic FedGovCo fashion, ATF has dumped this Sig brace letter after business hours on a Friday before a 3-day Gov weekend. If you haven’t seen it, I’m sure you will.
The most worrying thing about this announcement is the way the online gun community is tearing it’s hair out, blaming people for writing in asking for clarification of the regulation. We have no idea if that is what caused ATF to make this ruling, but screaming and bemoaning other shooters who “couldn’t leave well enough alone” reminds me of people calling civil rights reformers uppity.
Being able to do something so long as it escapes the gaze of your masters isn’t liberty. Now they’ve made a ruling and if there’s merit, Sig can take them to court like they did with the MPX.
Until then, stop trying to find someone to blame. We’re all shooters. Let’s get the hell along.

Aftermarket Glock Magazines that Don’t Suck?
Yeah, I’m interested, especially if they weigh within 2oz of a factory Glock 17 magazine (I’m sure they do) so they will be USPSA Production legal.
Magpul is going some cool stuff this year, looks like that move out of Colorado isn’t hurting them.

Bloggers, You’re Being Trolled
A couple weeks ago a reader sent me an email about “Perceived Carry Decoys” with a link to a website that claims will be creating inert guns in holsters so people can have the perception of open carry without the responsibility of actually carrying a gun.
...Negligent Discharge in a Gun Store
Somewhat graphic video, so be warned, and watch carefully:
...Point Shooting Sucks
Great video here from John at Ballistic Radio:
“Apparently if you practice to use your sights, that’s what you wanna do.”
Yep. If you practice using your sights, and you practice your draw stroke, you can rip quick times even from concealment.
I’m of the opinion that a lot of people who love the idea of point shooting aren’t very good at shooting, and they use it as a crutch or excuse for their poor shooting instead of putting in the work to get better.
