I Got Smoked…

Tue, 03/17/2015 - 17:02

Last night I shot the Wake County Action Pistol match, and I had an off night. Not really sure what happened, but I just felt like I was spinning my wheels all night, and I couldn’t get traction. I’ve been practicing and dryfiring like a madman, but it just didn’t pan out for me last night. The only thing I can really think of is actually something I’ve been preaching on the podcast forever, and that is to be honest with myself in dryfire.

Photoshopped Glocks and Training vs. Practice – 125

Mon, 03/16/2015 - 03:30

At the top of the show we talk a bit about USPSA and our practice regimen. I mentioned a couple of Instagram videos on the Triangle Tactical Instagram page where I FUBAR a reload in a drill, and some video of the “Drill of the Week” from last week. Find them all here.

Quote of the Day: Mastery and Loving to Practice

Tue, 03/10/2015 - 14:19

Today’s reading comes from Page 75 of George Leonard’s Mastery:

There’s another secret: The people we know as masters don’t devote themselves to their particular skill just to get better at it. The truth is, they love to practice–and because of this they do get better. And then, to complete the circle, the better they get the more they enjoy performing the basic moves over and over again.

Having a boring match

Mon, 03/09/2015 - 18:41

Back when I had the fortune to interview Steve Anderson for episode 107, one of the (many) things that stuck with me was a moment where he talks about accepting your current level of skill and not trying to shoot better than you actually are on match day. Playing his straight man, I replied that that sounds like a great way to shoot a boring match. Which, it is.

The X in XM855

Thu, 03/05/2015 - 16:47

Since all of this craziness started a couple weeks ago about a possible ban of XM855 ammo, I’ve heard a lot of people mention that they like having it on hand because it’s military ammo that has to meet a certain amount of specifications so it’s somehow better than “civilian” type ammo.

Thing is, the XM855 ammo that’s generally sold on the open market is the stuff that failed quality control to become military ammo, hence the X designation.

I don’t want to see any ammo banned, but if you bought XM855 thinking that it was some super special military grade ammo, you were wrong.

Podcast Delayed

Mon, 03/02/2015 - 04:50

Just a quick heads up, episode 123 will release sometime this afternoon. While recording last night my computer decided that it didn’t want to live anymore, so I had to switch computers right before we recorded.

The good news is that we were able to record and its a great episode, the bad news is that I need to get a whole bunch of junk off of the old computer before I can get it edited and uploaded.

Hang tight, it’ll be ready before long.

Things New Shooters Say At Their First Match:

Sat, 02/28/2015 - 12:08

##”How were my hits? Good?”

If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a hundred times. On the surface it sounds like a perfectly logical thing to ask, but really if a shooter is watching his sights and  paying attention to what he is doing, he should know where his hits were.

I had a new shooter say something a while back at one of the Wake County Action Pistol matches about the lighting being so that he couldn’t see the bullet holes in his targets, and that was throwing off his game. I retorted that he should be watching his sights and they would tell him where the bullets went, and he laughed me off like I was talking to him in Chinese or something.

A Note for Practiscore Users

Sat, 02/28/2015 - 07:52

Going through some of my notes from the last SWGC USPSA match, and I was reminded of a situation that occurred at the match. On one stage Ben was running the Practiscore tablet (A kindle running the scoring software for the match) and Chris Tilley was shooting a stage from behind a barricade with his open gun. When Chris transitioned to the side of the barricade that Ben and I were standing on, each of his shots caused the Kindle to jump back a page in the software. It must have been something to do with the noise/concussion of the open gun being reflected off of the barricade, but I thought it was interesting.

Random Power Outage Thoughts:

Thu, 02/26/2015 - 15:10

When my phone woke me up at 4:55am this morning my alarm clock was blinking 12:03, telling me that the power had went been out, and only come back on a few minutes before I woke up. After I left work work my wife sent me a text message and said that the power went out completely, and it stayed out until just about 4:00pm.

Would You Travel to a Non-Permissive State for a Match?

Tue, 02/24/2015 - 07:00

I’ve been struggling with something for a long as I’ve been involved in the shooting sports, and that is IDPA and USPSA both holding national championships in states that hate our gun rights.
