Icemageddeon 2015 is Looming

Tue, 01/13/2015 - 15:47

Alright folks, it’s that time again. One of the couple times a year that we actually see winter weather in here in the south.

What Grinds My Gears – 116

Sun, 01/11/2015 - 16:29

I’m back! I’ve been away from the podcast for almost a month because we did the 2014 “best of” show, and then I got really sick. Started out with a cold, then the flu, then an ear infection, and finally a ruptured ear drum, but I’m back! Due to my absence I haven’t been able to get out all of the things that have been bothering me over the past several weeks, so this week I told Ben to clear the main topic for me so I could vent, and I did.

[Housekeeping] Apparently the Email List is Broken

Sat, 01/10/2015 - 17:30

Yeah, so, I apparently haven’t been paying enough attention to things recently, and today I was made aware that the email subscription list hasn’t been working since some time in early December.

No idea what went wrong, but it’s working again, and emails will resume on Monday. Sorry about the screw up.

I’m Working on the 2015 Calendar…

Fri, 01/09/2015 - 15:46

Y’all have been blowing up my email over the past week asking about the 2015 calendar.

I’m working on it now, but it’s tedious and I’m still waiting for a few different ranges to get their 2015 calendars published. Keep checking it over the next week or so, and I’ll hopefully have most everything published for 2015by the end of next week.

If you’re a range owner, or you know of any changes that I need to anticipate in match schedules this year, please comment below, or shoot me an email at .

M-Lok, Key-Mod, Screws and Nuts, I Don’t Care

Maybe I’m just too simplistic when it comes to tacticessorizing my rifles, but I honestly couldn’t care less about any of these accessory mounting systems.

2015 Goals and Predictions – 115

Tue, 01/06/2015 - 07:57

Ben recorded this episode solo because I’m still under the weather, but I plan to be back next week. Anyways, he talks about his plans for 2015, and makes some predictions for what the future may hold for guns and the shooting sports.

Michigan Becomes a Real Shall-Issue State

Post by Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners.

Michigan has always had a weird CCW permit system that involved “County gun boards” that had the final say in whether or not someone would get their permit. Hardly what we’d call “shall issue” these days. I’m glad to see Gov. Snyder ditching the County gun boards in favor of a real shall issue system.

The seductive danger of false precision

Sat, 01/03/2015 - 17:09

I’m sure you’ve seen it: the “diagnostic pistol target” with a series of pie slices around a circular center. Shoot the center and see where your hits end up and tells you what’s wrong with your shooting. I won’t reproduce it here because it’s so unproductive I don’t even want to spread it any further. If you haven’t seen it, be glad. You probably will if you hang out in this hobby long enough.

Bullseye targets suck

Fri, 01/02/2015 - 16:26

Of all the things that most shooters do when they go the range that sabotage their efforts to improve, one of the ones that’s been really bugging me recently is the use of bullseye targets. I think most people do it just because it’s what everyone expects or it seems like the right thing to do (so you can grade your accuracy?), but they just suck.

Define success at the range

Thu, 01/01/2015 - 16:24

I celebrated the New Year today by… going to the range. I’ve decided it’s time for the quasi-annual switch to go shoot my 1911 in USPSA Single Stack and CDP for a while, and since I’ve improved as a shooter since last May (you have too, right?) I wanted to take it out and shoot some 20 yard head boxes just to make sure I knew where it was hitting and be confident in my ability to deliver the shot. I also had loaded a few .45s with the powder I happen to have an 8lb jug of, which isn’t the same powder I happened to have an 8lb jug of the last time I was shooting .45ACP (the brand really doesn’t matter).

This is the thousandth blog post on Triangle Tactical. Only took just shy of 3 years.

Here’s to the next thousand!

So, I guess I’m like a real blogger now, right?

Going to the match to get better or to win?

Tue, 12/30/2014 - 20:03

Watching shooting videos as much as I do, you see it fairly commonly: people shooting a USPSA stage get to the end and, especially in low-cap divisions like Production, end up at slide lock with one more shot left to go on the stage. Rather than reload and shoot the last shot, they just take the miss assuming that another shot on the clock will just hurt their score less than shooting again.

Zombie Shooters Association Drops Bombshell on Facebook

Tue, 12/30/2014 - 10:00

Earlier today the folks at ZSA dropped a bomb on their Facebook page:

Sounds like a magical land filled with the sounds of high speed lead impacting steel targets, and enbloc clips going TING! as they fly out of John’s Garand.

How awesome is it that there will be yet another competitive shooting venue in Eastern NC? Not only do we have the shooters to support it, but we desperately need more USPSA matches in the state, so this is a win all around. I like it.

Bored? Want To See a Bunch of Ruined Glocks? Try This:

Not long ago I posted about following the #kydex hashtag in Instagram, and how not all folks making holsters really know what they’re doing. Today I came across even more derp, and I had to share it. So, if you want to see a bunch of completely ruined tactically stippled Glocks try this:

2014 Top 5’s

Tue, 12/30/2014 - 08:00

2014 has been a really awesome year for Triangle Tactical. This website saw more traffic than ever (more traffic in 2014 than 2012 and 2013 combined), and that’s pretty awesome. Even better than that though, is that I’ve actually gotten to know a whole bunch of you through the blog. As we’re wrapping up the end of 2014, I thought it might be cool to post some of the Top 5’s that I found interesting from the websites stats during the previous year.

Training the right skill

Tue, 12/30/2014 - 03:22

I’ve always appreciated the underlying rationale in IDPA for doing all reloads from slide lock given the narrative frame of self-defense integral to the sport. It’s known beyond doubt that in a self-defense situation you’ll pull the trigger until the threat stops or the gun surprises you by running dry. You won’t be counting shots and be able to plan reloads in real life.
