Idaho Bowhunter’s Backup Gun Saves Him from Grizzly Attack

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 15:15

At least one Idaho bowhunter is now thankful that the state allows archers to carry handguns while hunting. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game reported on Monday that a bowhunter was attacked by a grizzly bear in Caribou-Targhee National Forest earlier that morning. The 55-year-old man, identified as Mike Adams, apparently encountered a sow with three cubs while hunting for elk. He was able to use a .44-caliber handgun to scare the bear off, but sustained severe injuries to one arm. Despite...

Florida County to Use Sheriff’s Deputies to Help Control Hogs

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 14:50

How big is the feral pig problem in Florida? Big enough for at least one county to consider sending its sheriffs hog hunting. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Hillsborough County officials have included $40,000 in their 2016 budget proposal to help control the county's hog population. The plan is for the sheriff's office---aided by the Conservation and Environmental Lands Management Department---to hunt the pigs...

Video: Farmer Catches Fish with Remote-controlled Drone

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 13:10

If this video isn't fabricated in some way, then it may very well be the first time a human-piloted drone has managed to catch a fish. In the clip, farmer Derek Klingenberg (known for his "What Does The Farmer Say" parody video) apparently catches a bluegill using a remote-controlled quadcopter. He proudly proclaims that it's his "first drone fish"---it may very well be the first in the world! https://youtu.be/U5Ho897tbrM...

3 Top Opening-day Stand Sites for Mature Bucks

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 10:48

In many states, the opening weekend of archery season falls during a time of change for whitetail bucks. Most seasons open in September or on October 1. In early September, velvet comes off a deer's antlers and their testosterone is beginning to rise. Bachelor groups are breaking up and food sources are changing. Some hunters love this time of the year because deer are almost totally focused on available food and are unmolested, so their patterns are somewhat predictable. Others scorn this time of the year because food sources can change rapidly and bucks will move with the food. The...

Why is This Northern Pike Neon Green? Experts Have Answers

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 10:47

It's not nuclear mutation or a new species, so that rules out the more interesting answers, but why is this northern pike fluorescent green? Canadian angler Randy Straker caught this bizarre-looking fish from Great Slave Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories on Sunday, but he still has not figured out what gave the fish its strange color. "The whole top of the fish had a different green," he told the CBC. "If you look at the mouth, it looked like green lipstick. It was so...

Video: Deep Sea Fishing with an Ice Fishing Rod

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 10:08

For anglers who like a challenge, there are ways to make catching a fish more difficult---like deep sea fishing with a ice fishing rod and reel. This video shows us that it's possible to go deep sea fishing with a tiny rod and reel as long as you are patient. The angler in the video really had to work the line in order to reel in a red snapper. While the size of this fish might not seem very impressive to anglers who routinely pull giant muskies through the ice, it's still pretty admirable given the equipment used. https://youtu.be/-nJoLvDuA2Y?t=224...

Video: Blowing Up 2,000 Rounds of Ammunition

Tue, 09/01/2015 - 10:02

Ever wonder what it would be like to cook over 2,000 rounds of old surplus ammunition? It looks and sounds a lot like popcorn in a kettle---if your kettle caught on fire and spat out bullets. You can see an example of what a controlled demolition is like below. According to the video's description, the demolition took place at a military site near Zelenokumsk, Russia and involved thousands of rounds left over since World War II. These rounds are no longer considered usable and can actually be quite dangerous to anyone attempting to fire them, so they are...

How good do you think you are at recognizing sights? We're not going to lie, this quiz gets pretty hard toward the end, especially since it relies on you both having knowledge of a wide array of guns and what their sights look like. Odds are, unless you're a studied scholar or have actually taken some of these firearms to the range, you're not going to get all of them right. Just to be sporting, we left the back of the firearm in the frame---in some cases---so you could at least make an educated guess. If all else fails, try using the process of elimination. Some of the possible...

Video: Is This the Ultimate “Zombie Shotgun?”

Mon, 08/31/2015 - 09:51

Because in the future zombie apocalypse, you won't need to aim properly. Whether you hate it or love it, the zombie craze did offer many people a chance to build crazy, ineffective, and downright ludicrous firearms. While they may look fun and awesome, most of these are about as practical as a spoon on your AR-15. This tricked-out shotgun from Demolition Ranch is a prime example. Fitted with a chainsaw grip, two flashlights, two trench knife-style bayonets, an actual chainsaw blade, and a laser, this shotgun weighs a ton and is about as easy to aim as a barn door. Still, there's no...

One of the most hallowed beaches for surf fishing in the world is the point of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. But there's another less-frequented but very similar location in Cape Lookout about 70 miles to the southwest. Like Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout is a promontory point that juts out into the Atlantic and is constantly affected by currents, tides, and storms. At both locations, the sun rises and sets over water and both the northern and southern beaches serve as an obstacle for bait and predator fish traveling with currents. Both these locations draw anglers from all over the world in...

Two men fishing the Black Warrior River in Alabama brought new meaning to the term "catfishing" this weekend when they brought an unexpected catch aboard: two young kittens. Jason Frost and Brandon Key were putting along on the river when they noticed a tiny kitten swimming toward their boat. After it got close, Frost pulled the mewling orange-and-white feline aboard and gave it some comforting pets. "Is this not the craziest thing y'all have ever seen?" Frost asks the camera. The anglers were then joined by another kitten that swims from shore right up to their boat---which may even...
